  1. Sounds interesting Brian I am tempted myself now..(to read the book not take the drug)
  2. I am really enjoying Araminta Station. Typical Vance. Poor poor Sessily Veder!! I don't want to go to work I just want to read all day today
  3. For a while now I have been collecting up all Jack Vance books in second hand paperbacks. I was able to get them for really good prices . Sometimes only 1p plus postage. However good old Jack has scuppered this project by going and dying when I was only half way through. . All the paperbacks from second hand sellers on Amazon have suddenly disappeared. The good news is though that his books are all now available for kindle through Gollanz and they have knocked £2 off the usual price. So all now at £2.99 during august. I bought 7 including all 5 of the Demon Princes novels, The Blue World and Araminta Station, which is the first of the Cadwal Chronicles, which I have never read!
  4. I have started reading Sharpe's Company, I like the style of writing but I don't know quite how to describe it, it is very lean, economical, but also highly romantic in the sense of a man making his own destiny against the odds...remarkable.

  11. That's really nice that some people go that personal trouble to share books.
  12. Ah- that's good essential info. Thanks !
  13. Hi Bobblybear! Haven't read NW but I did have a good go at White Teeth and gave up on it....thought it was really contrived and the characters unconvincing..Zadie Smith's reputation is undeserved in my opinion.
  14. You can do it Kidsmum ! But don't forget if there is a book you really want you can always try to get it from someone as a swop, that way the number of books in the house doesn't increase. I don't agree with browsing books when you have no money though that just makes you feel miserable like you are denying yourself.
  15. (and I have told this story before but he bought me a dress once and I looked at it and said 'it won't fit' and he said 'it will .. an elephant could fit in it' and I tried it on and it didn't fit that just shows that he ought not to be writing any manuals for anybody. It wasn't that the dress didn't fit .. it was the elephant comment .. there's really no recovering from that ) Oh my
  16. Only 3 in England so I zoomed in on one that was on one of the stops on the railway down to London...just in case I might want to get off and borrow a book..
  17. That is a very cool idea!
  18. Hi Kylie long time no chat! Of course those spiders you have down under are a lot more dangerous than our puny specimins.
  19. Those three books are Karsa's reading for the rest of the year then. Steve just thinking if you had bought the tree book versions and lugged them to work every day think how fit you would be by Christmas.
  20. Is Ship of Magic ok to read as a one off book Andrea? Will it make sense ? It sounds interesting but I don't want to have to get into that other trilogy as well.
  21. Putting this on my wishlist thanks Pontalba.
  22. Ouch! You don't take prisoners Willoyd but then that's exactly what reviews are about. On Chesil Beach is one that always seems to be floating at the periphery of my wishlist , one I might get around to one day if there is nothing more exciting. Maybe I should leave it out there on the edge...
  23. This book looks extremely interesting Athena! I will definitely check this out.
  24. Things went completely to pot with my reviews, I haven't reviewed a single book since about June I think. Going to make an effort to get things back on track.
