That's funny I seen those films long time ago but don't even remember Mr Kinnear being in them! I can understand why you watched YGM frankie it being about books quite a lot
-
yeah, but then it was like all the information was all about America and although the guy's way of looking at the world was interesting, I thought how is this going to affect me or anything I do? I just switched off. I got so many good books on my kindle right now...

I gave up on Freakenomics tonight.... The first part was good, then in my kindle version the authors had inserted a load of supplementary material, critical articles and bits from their own blog which just blew their own trumpets and repeated the same subjects over again..I started to get fed up with it. I am really behind on my reviews but real life is quite demanding of me at the moment, to say the least...

Hi Abby nice to see you back!

How many books do you read at once?
vodkafan replied to aromaannie's topic in General Book Discussions
Yes, always have done. Sometimes 3 or 4 but not often . Usually only two at a time. -
If you read from an Ereader the fact the genre is not so popular right now works in our favour; I saw whole collections of 20 -plus Western novels going for less than a pound. I think genres go in cycles like fashion but a good novel will always be a good novel so the best ones will survive in any genre. Like Lady Kell I plan to read one next year too.

Greg Kinnear a bad guy? I don't think I have ever seen him in a bad guy role. I liked him as the gay artist in As Good As It Gets and as a conjoined twin in Stuck On You

Hmm no reviews of Almost Salinas on Amazon and almost nothing written about it on IMDB...is it a love or hate it kind of film? Would I be bored?

Ah Frankie yes! You must watch Muriel's Wedding if you never see any other film again ever! It is that good. I don't think Toni Collete has ever acted better in any film she has made since. And the film has very poignant sad moments too. Strictly Ballroom is so funny too. I will have to look that one up Sadya.

I like Australian films. I like the way they don't pick pretty actors and actresses. Take Muriel's Wedding. Muriel was fat and a loser but by the end of the film I wanted to marry her myself.

We watched Contagion a few days ago. Had lots of big names in it. Unfortunately there was no real story there. A new disease came, lots of people died, scientists developed a vaccine ..then it was the end. I was like "So?" Of course they developed a vaccine, that's what their job is. There didn't seem any point to the film.

Welcome Sarah, anybody who does windsurfing and archery must be interesting, but can you do them both at the same time? We have a couple of active Yoga practitioners on the forum too by the way.

Welcome back Lana. Hmm Psychology huh? So that means you can read minds yes?

A bit where a black boy- one of the other maids sons- gets blinded for using a white bathroom- a part where one black woman accuses Skeeter of using their stories to get ahead and make money for herself- a lot of the relationship with Stuart (including meetings with his father) and most of the violence from Minnie's husband (and the fact that she finds courage to leave him at the end)

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
vodkafan replied to poppyshake's topic in Previous Reading Circle Books
The Mah Jong chapter worked well for me I thought it was amusing and flowed well enough, I didn't find it a sticking point; in fact there were no "sticky bits" for me in the book which stopped me reading. -
Hi I have bought an MP4 player from Ebay. It has not arrived yet. It seemed a good idea at the time. I realised though that I have no idea what to do with it . I asked somebody about buying music from itunes but they said itunes is only for Apple products. Also they told me that MP4 is videos. So does that mean I can take music videos from youtube? ? I am a complete dullard with this sort of stuff. I have never downloaded anything except google images for my avatar. And I had to be shown how to do that What is legal and what is not? And does it matter anyway?

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
vodkafan replied to poppyshake's topic in Previous Reading Circle Books
I think you are right it is a male perspective thing poppyshake. It wasn't that I didn't like Caroline, she was harmless and entertaining but also sort of irrelevant. I do think that whole olde English set up is very strange where unmarried siblings end up living together and everybody has servants; it is very funny. Although that last staement was nothing to do with what you were talking about, sorry -
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

Who was your favourite Character? My favourite character was Dr Sheppard himself, until the end anyway. He seemed a nice genuine man, a pillar of the community. I guess I would make a terrible detective. Was there a particular part you enjoyed more than the rest I liked all the bits with Poirot and Sheppard together the best. Was this the first book you've read in this genre/by this author/has it encouraged you to read more? First by the author and first whodunit. I will definitely read more. Were there any parts/ideas you struggled with? No not really the story was easy to follow, and I knew that everything I was reading was important, I knew the clues must be all in front of me but I still could not work it out! What were your thoughts about Poirot? Poirot was great. A little pompous and ridiculous. We only ever saw him of course through Dr Sheppards eyes, as he was writing the story, so I wondered how much of Poirot ‘s mannerisms was an act to lull Sheppard into a false sense of security. Did you work out whodunnit, who was on your suspect list? I failed to work it out! For most of the book I thought Flora had did it. In hindsight, were there clues early on as to the guilt of Dr Sheppard? I did think as I read it that Dr Sheppard became unusually excited when Ackroyd started reading the blue letter but then stopped before revealing the blackmailer. Of course, we now know that reading the name aloud to his murderer would not have saved him from his grisly fate. Do you feel justice was done? No I am with everybody else on this one. It makes no sense at all for Poirot to do that. Overall was reading the book an enjoyable experience? Yes very enjoyable. Would you recommend the book and if so to whom? I would recommend the book to anybody. I think Agatha Christie must have had a really great clever mind to write a story like that which shows everything at the same time as keeping things hidden and tricking the reader! -

I am sure I got the impression that she was getting better at the end, or at least was ready to move on even with her disability. -
