  1. Kindle comes into it's own here doesn't it- can you imagine lugging around 7 books on holiday?
  2. Wow how did I miss this review Paula? This sounds fantastic !!
  3. Hey when I go into the barber's the man says that to me every time should I be worried Poppy?
  4. Doh! Knew I shouldn't have came on here Ooshie gonna have to put these on the wishlist now.
  5. Will it matter too much if you only have 24 or 25 when you get back or are you supposed to bring them all back safely ?
  6. Hi Steve, no apology necessary, at least you gave it a good go and your review was honest, and you were able to dissect and pinpoint what you did not like. However, you did give an accurate account of Vance's trademark style, which is his astonishing inventiveness, his worldbuilding , his ideas and descriptions. That dialogue style runs through all his books so I guess if that annoyed you, and the other things weren't enough to hook you, then as you say Jack is not for you. I still enjoyed reading your review though. We shall talk more of Lyonesse over a few beers in London!
  7. Hi Hekau. If you liked Dawkins how about Bill Bryson? Different enough to be stimulating but similar enough to be a safe bet.You certainly seem like a serious reader, the way you tackled the Bible, making notes etc. I haven't read much popular psychology but I know Frankie has and some others on here too, they will be able to give you some pointers there. It seems like you need some lighter reads like novels but you say scifi, fantasy, romance and adventure are out...hmmm. Maybe one of the English classics like Jane Eyre? Or possibly a true life war memoir , I can recommend A Helmet for my Pillow or even better The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. Another true life book I recommend to everybody is Black Like Me.
  8. How does it compare to the film Kylie? The film was a Disney one if I remember rightly and I got the feeling it was toned down for juniors, even though I haven't read the book.
  9. Finished The Jewel In The Skull by Michael Moorcock. Now reading The Weaker Vessel by Antonia Fraser. 31 Tree Books to go
  10. Great review I was waiting to see what you made of it..
  11. yes I noticed too that it was weirdly dark today
  12. Hi Janet, you have read a lot of unusual books lately. The Bill Bryson one is the only one that jumped out at me that I might want to try though.
  13. Just finished The Accidental. back down to 32 Tree Books to go!

Hi Kate, if you like witty banter between characters, I would recommend the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovitch, I have read the first 3 and they are pretty funny. Welcome to the forum
  16. Welcome jynx. You came to the right place to get ideas for new reads, a good percentage of books I read now are recommendations from others on here. You say you like all genres, do you have any favourite authors though? If so why do you like them in particular?
  17. That would be horror enough for me Welcome Mad Scientist !
  18. Ok I am back. I read 2 books on holiday but then I went and bought 3 second hand. King Arthur Man or Myth? Paul White A Short History Of Tractors In Ukranian Marina Lewycka Devoted Ladies Molly Keane I also found a brilliant Map of part of Norway Total spend including the map: £3 I still have 33 Tree Books to go
  19. Yeah nobody can compete with Captain Kirk!
  20. Hi Ash, welcome
  21. Have you ever awarded a 10 before? I am stunned...
  22. We'll be here .
  23. I think that's it. Most of the recent stuff is written in series format but the old stuff was mostly stand alone books. Also Karsa has read far more fantasy than I have, that's for sure, I was always more straight SciFi. I also had what amounted to a 20 year break in reading ! I am an old git.
  24. Sorry Ruth, but I am enjoying what I have read of The Accidental so far !
  25. Phrophets Of Science Fiction sounds really interesting. Haven't seen it but the name does ring a bell, it probably has aired here.
