Harry Potter or Twilight Saga?
:HerculeHastings: replied to lola-rose's topic in Children's / Young Adult
I'd vote for Harry Potter simply because Twilight does appeal to a very narrow demographic which excludes me. Harry Potter has a very gripping plot, and everything seems to fall into place throughout the story. They do seem to link and develop coherently, and I guess the humour really appeals to me too, especially when Malfoy is bickering with Harry. But there certainly isn't any reason for you not to read both. -
I haven't read the series and I don't intend to, for I seem to have heard very bad reviews about it from friends whose reading tastes are similar to mine. That, and I just dislike romances in general unless they're really very realistic and well-written. Also, the idea about vampires and werewolves becoming just like ordinary people and attending school and all sounds a little distasteful since I'm quite a fan of the gothic horror genre. That said, I suppose Twilight has its merits. Unfortunately, I'd fail to recognise them if the books are placed in my hands, so it's better like this.

*Results* - Your 'Top 5' Childrens'/Young Adult books
:HerculeHastings: replied to Janet's topic in Children's / Young Adult
I think I'd choose Roald Dahl books as my 5 favourites. I love Enid Blyton, but somehow Dahl's books stick in my mind as more meaningful reads. I love Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and Matilda, definitely. -
Books you're looking forward to in 2010
:HerculeHastings: replied to chesilbeach's topic in General Book Discussions
Oh, I'm really looking forward to Anne Tyler's newest book, Noah's Compass, set to be released this month. That, and World of Darkness instalments. I'm always eager for those. -
Hello! I live in the Buangkok area, that's the northeast region in Singapore.

I do feel like a kid saying this, but the only autobiography I've ever loved is Boy-- Tales Of Childhood by Roald Dahl. It was written with children in mind, so the stories inside were all very funny and interesting. I'm generally not a fan of non-fiction, and autobiographies and biographies aren't to my liking as there isn't anybody I'm particularly interested in, and if there is I'd usually just check Wikipedia.

Hey there, Univerze! You're right, this place is teeming with welcomers. And I'm but one of them, ahaha. Welcome!

A (slightly long-winded) hello from Michael
:HerculeHastings: replied to MichaelD's topic in Introductions
Hello and welcome, MichaelD! I'm sure you'll have fun here, and it's good to meet fast readers. I used to be pretty speedy when I was a child, but lately I've decided to read more slowly so that I won't finish good books too quickly, hehe. -
I'd say not. What's Steps?

Yep do call me HH, and thanks for the welcomes, everyone! So nice of all of you to come here.

Do teenagers still read books?
:HerculeHastings: replied to Suburbanite's topic in Children's / Young Adult
Honestly, I can't quite pinpoint any specific age group that doesn't read. There're young kids who read voraciously, teenagers who go gaga over Twilight (that's reading for you too) and adults who pick something up to read while on their way to their offices. Even senior citizens can be seen in the libraries browsing through magazines. However, I find that nobody I know ever reads the same books I do. I don't know why. ): -
Why, you may be right. I shall hunt for it again, if I haven't thrown it out already. D:

World Of Darkness, And Other RPG Rulebooks
:HerculeHastings: replied to :HerculeHastings:'s topic in Horror / Fantasy / SF
That's fine indeed. Thanks very much, Lilywhite. I was so sure I started the thread right in this section. *confused* My memory's failing me. -
World Of Darkness, And Other RPG Rulebooks
:HerculeHastings: posted a topic in Horror / Fantasy / SF
It seems peculiar, but I wonder if there're others out there like me who enjoy reading RPG rulebooks even though we don't play the game. For instance, I'm a big fan of World of Darkness (the new version that is) but no one around seems to want to play it with me. Not that I mind anyway, for I'm mostly interested in the writing, character creation and the mood it conveys. I also read Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks in bookstores if I can. I'm a forum roleplayer, you see, so such things interest me greatly, especially the part about races and such. -
Hello there, dear! I'm HH, at your service. *bows* As for ircChat, I'm not sure if it has something to do with mIRC, which is an instant messaging chatroom thing. People just type in the channel name and can chat with people in the channel, with an account of course.

Harry Potter Books by J. K. Rowling
:HerculeHastings: replied to kitty_kitty's topic in Children's / Young Adult
I first read Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone when I was nine years old, when a classmate brought it to school. I remember trying it out one day when I was bored of lessons, and couldn't put it down since, and we had to fight over the book during recess, haha. I think all the books in the Harry Potter series are the addictive kinds. I'm afraid of picking any one of them up cuz I know I'll never be able to leave it without finishing it. The concept's excellent and I'm glad children love it. -
A Question for NON Poetry Lovers
:HerculeHastings: replied to BookJumper's topic in Poetry, Plays & Short Stories
This isn't a very nice way to say it, but poetry makes me feel stupid. I'm not a student of Literature. I stopped learning it since I was 15 years old, and now whenever I see Lit students discussing poetry, I'm simply blown off by their interpretations. It seems as if every word was inserted with a purpose, that nothing can be taken at face value. And I began wondering if perhaps the poet didn't mean for the poem to be so in-depth to begin with. Some of them truly sounded farfetched in my opinion. I guess I'm just not an appreciator of abstract thought. -
I haven't been a fan of a Dracula, strangely. I picked it up as a kid expecting to be scared out of my life, but ended up feeling a little confused and even bored. The frightening parts weren't gripping enough for me, and the hunt for Dracula felt redundant. I won't say it's a thoroughly bad book, but it's definitely overrated.

My 3 favourite classics: 1. A Tale Of Two Cities by Charles Dickens I didn't understand the book throughout till I came to the ending. Somehow, after the ending, everything seemed to fall into place. Don't know how that's possible, but I closed the last chapter feeling like I'd read the book of a genius. 2. Little Men by Louisa May Alcott I read all 4 books in the Little Women series, and I love all of them (in a guilty pleasure sort of way cuz I'm not the romantic kind). Little Men is such a fun book and it made me cry too. Jo's Boys made me cry a lot as well. I do like her orphans. 3. The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson When I first read Treasure Island, I hadn't had a good impression of Rober Louis Stevenson. I thought him rather violent, going about stabbing people all the time. But The Master Of Ballantrae was a great read, filled with romance and betrayal, very sensational. And I truly felt for all the characters.

Who is your favorite detective/crime fighter?
:HerculeHastings: replied to Echo's topic in Crime / Mystery / Thriller
Oh I love Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie's novels. Even if the author herself dislikes him, I'm quite fond of the Belgian egg-shaped head, haha. I've grown up with him through my childhood after all. Though I tend to love sidekicks better, like Hastings. -
I'm into J-rock/J-pop so my favourite artistes are UVERworld, Abingdon Boys School, Mai Hoshimura and Surface.

What have you been watching at the cinema? (Cont..)
:HerculeHastings: replied to Lilywhite's topic in Music / TV / Films
The last movie I ever watched was UP. It was so good I think no other movie will be worth the ticket prices. OMG it's seriously the best film of the year.
