It has to become very known at SOME point at least. A classic, to me, is a book that you've heard of even though you may not have read it. And it's also not a book that is part of a pop culture series (again, according to me). Life of Pi, as mentioned above, is a novel that I can picture becoming a classic, absolutely. What Stephen King book stands the best chance of becoming a classic? The Green Mile maybe? How about The Kite Runner? Memoirs of a Geisha? The Road? Something by Haruki Murakami? House of Leaves? White teeth? Can the Harry Potter series and Hunger games become classics, you think?

A best of Queen album and a best of REM album would make my list, as would a best of Bruce Springsteen etc etc. The reason why I think it isn't fair to compare best of albums to regular albums with new music is because some artists have very long careers behind them, with many years of great songs to choose among. Newer artists aren't there yet. So I prefer to make a difference between best of albums and albums featuring only new material. By the way, I forgot Adele´s 21 album on my list. Opsie.

In let's say 200 years, which books from the past 20 years (1994-2014) do you think have a good chance of becoming classics -- if any?

In the process of moving to my parents (temporary only of course). Most my books are packed down in boxes. There is no order. I have very few options to choose right now.

Not listing any "best of..." albums, cause that's not fair. Such a list would look different. 1. Lana Del Rey - Born to die, the Paradise Edition 2. Florence + the machine - Ceremonials 3. Loreen - Heal 4. Evanescence - Fallen 5. Amanda Jenssen - Killing my darlings 6. Laleh - Sjung 7. Destiny's child - Survivor 8. Katie Melua - Piece by piece 9. Savage garden - Savage garden 10. Roxette - Joyride 11. Amy Winehouse - Back to black 12. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence 13. Lykke Li - Wounded rhymes 14. Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway 15. Hole - Celebrity skin 16. Cher - Living proof 17. Rihanna - Good girl gone bad 18. Darin - Lovekiller 19. Rebecca & Fiona - I love you, man 20. Bryan Adams - Reckless Bonus: Robyn - Body Talk (part 1, 2 and 3)

European teams have a tough tournament! I am always rooting for Germany (and Sweden, whenever they have qualified). Today, Germany almost lost against Ghana. Thank lord for Miroslav Klose, and congrats to him for his 15th World Cup goal. I hope he makes one more to be the lone #1 scorer. Right now, tied with Brazil's former star Ronaldo. Spain out. England out. Italy & Portugal next? Aside from Germany, I am also liking Mexico and Chile. I am impressed with the new English players though. I see very good promise in Sturridge and especially Raheem Sterling!

Finished my thesis and had it published earlier this week. Thrilled. Now I have to do the last changes on my both bachelor theses and then I will get my university degree and my teacher legitimation. The end is near! But hopefully I can add a philosophy as my 3rd subject. Keep your fingers crossed that I will get a spot on the Philosophy B course.

Best author competition - finale: RESULTS are in
emelee replied to emelee's topic in General Book Discussions
Yes. But you have to rank all 7. So then you have two options on how to do that: 1). Go on gut feelings when placing all 7 in your order. 2) If you can't, then place the authors you like first, and all rest you put outside the list. They will all recieve points though. For example 7p (Authors name) 6p. (Authors name) 5p. (Authors name) 4p. (Authors name) -- The rest All the rest will recieve 2 points as there are place 1-3 left. -

I can go first..... 7p. to Oscar Wilde 6p. to Fyodor Dostoyevsky 5p. to Jane Austen 4p. to George Orwell 3p. to Charles Dickens 2p. to JRR Tolkien 1p. to Terry Pratchett -
Competition over. The results are.......... http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/12775-best-author-competition-finale-results-are-in/?p=397497 (or just scroll down to post 17 in this thread....) This is the finale. Last round there was a poll. 3 authors were eliminated. The results of that poll will give each authors a certain point as we continue. That point is set by procentage that author got in the poll. OPEN for new entries until JUNE 30 In the finale, your job is to do a ranking. The winner will be the author that gets the MOST amount of points. So you rank these 7 authors in the order you prefer them. 7 points for your favorite, 6 points for your second favorite, 5 points for your third favorite etc.... and finally 1 point for your least favorite to win this competition. Charles Dickens Jane Austen George Orwell Terry Pratchett JRR Tolkien Oscar Wilde Fyodor Dostoyevsky Example: 7p. to Jane Austen 6p. to JRR Tolkien 5p. to Charles Dickens 4p. to Oscar Wilde 3p. to Terry Pratchett 2p. to Fyodor Dostoyevsky 1p. to George Orwell These are the points the authors carry with them from precious round: Charles Dickens (6 votes [15.38%] - View) = 15 points Jane Austen (7 votes [17.95%] - View) = 18 points George Orwell (5 votes [12.82%] - View) = 13 points Terry Pratchett (5 votes [12.82%] - View) = 13 points JRR Tolkien (5 votes [12.82%] - View) = 13 points Oscar Wilde (4 votes [10.26%] - View) = 10 points Fyodor Dostoyevsky (3 votes [7.69%] - View) = 8 points

Do you monitor what your children read?
emelee replied to frankie's topic in General Book Discussions
I have no kids, but if I had, I would just make sure they didn't read anything really inappropriate for their age. But I don't see how young kids would want to read such inappropriate things. I would not forbid them to read anything, but I would have to talk to them about what they read if they were to choose to read, let's say Mein Kampf by Hitler. Or books that can be shocking for young people. I don't think you should ban books because they are about sensitive topics. They will grow up and you can't sheild them forever. Instead, focus on talking about the books and what context they were written in etc. My mother didn't monitor my reading. But she didn't have to, cause she bought all books for me. She could have easily chosen not to buy a book if she didn't think it was ok. She never did though, cause I never wanted to read anything other than age-appropriate. -
I am in love with that cushion, Janet! I am a HUGE fan of Quentin Blake. And Matilda is one of my favorites.

Do you have a reading chair in mind that you really want to have, or even have? What kind of a chair is it? Maybe post a picture? I'd like a wing chair with some classic pattern that doesn't take over completely, but adds a touch of interest.

As this isn't the finale, it does not matter. This is kind of like a semi-final. The autors with most votes will be in the finale. And the finale won't be a poll.

That's one tongue-stumbler!

Last day to vote is tomorrow.

So I guess the rating is important for networks because the higher the rating, the more commercial viewing which equals more money. Which it is all about anyway. A show could have 40 million viewers, but if it does not bring in the money for it, it's a flop. I think that is a big reason why reality shows are so popular with networks. Cheap to produce, steady viewership and since it's cheap to produce, it brings in the cash. A no-brainer, right. Same with cooking shows and gameshows. So even though a show like The Mentalist may have a decent number of viewers in total, a 1.2 ratings isn't good, and CBS has to really think about if they want to renew it or cancel it. (They eventually decided to renew).
