  1. Well I saw the film yesterday, and knew the twist long before the end too, though not as soon as 10 minutes. Then again I try not to think too much on what's going to happen (even though all these things keep playing through my head when watching) because I don't like figuring out the plot before it unravels. :smile2:

But the film was good. Don't know if I'll be reading the book though, film turned out way different than I thought it would be and don't know if I'd enjoy this type of book.

  2. Went to see Shutter Island yesterday. I liked it. Not what I expected by far, and at times it was predictable, like when

him actually being a patient in that place, not an outside reseacher, or him having mental problems..

    that was no surprise. Or

his partner actually being a doctor there. Dr. Sheehan..

. Could go on like that for a while. But predictable doesn't always make for a bad film. It was intriguing, reminding me a bit of another film I love,

    A beautiful mind

. That needed to be in spoilers because the theme is much the same..

conspiracy theory at first, unravelling to where you find out the lead character is not as sane as you thought, or he thought.

Also got the same vibe as The Aviator, Leonardo's acting really reminded me of him as Howard Hughes again, only far more likeable.

This film got me thinking too, is one of those films you need to watch more than once, when you know the clue, the whole film would change I think.

    I enjoyed it.

  3. I have a theory that the faster you read, the less you retain.

There might be something to that theory.. :) I am one of those that read very fast.. especially if it's a new book of a series I enjoy or something. Think, finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in a few hours. The dutch version would take me about maybe 4 hours, and the english one took me slightly longer. But when I read books this fast I notice I have a hard time remembering some things. So sometimes, I intentionally try to read slower. Is hard though. But really, when it comes to descriptions etc, I have learned myself to read slow, word for word think of how someone or something looks, to form a picture in my head.. or else by a chapter more, I'll be thinking, wait, how did that one look? Who was that? :irked:

But generally, I don't remember all that much of plots. On one hand, too bad, on the other one.. when I do re-read those books, it's like, amazing. Coming back to someplace that's familiar, without knowing everything about it.

Even with books like The Stand, which I have read about 6 times now, I still can't recall a lot of what happens. Might also have to do with the lenght of the book, because I remember less of longer books. :D

Oh, and then there's the classics.. reading books like Frankenstein, I read to have read them, wanting to know the original. But now, even though I have read that less than 2 years ago, I can't remember much anymore, besides from what everyone knows. Didn't find the book all too good, so that plays a part too.

But yeah, we should start our own support group, for all of us forgetful people. :D

  4. Well, the verdict is out, tried some of my summer clothes since the weather's nice again, and I definitely gained some pounds since last year. Feeling like hell after dad died meant comfort food, for both me and mom. I have no idea what I weigh, but I know I don't like how my tummy looks. So. Today and tomorrow I have to go to university again for classes etc, so I decided to go by bike, where before I would have gone by bus. It's half an hour biking, so means an hour a day. Not bad right, don't need to lose much weight, so a more active lifestyle usually works too. Hopefully. :D

  5. My TBR list of books I actually own is very low.. like, less than 10. I usually just buy books I really want to read at that time, OR that I find too cheap to resist. Unfortunately, those last are few. So I usually read new books too, when I have nothing to read or when the mood strikes me, I'll get to the other books on my TBR list.

The books I want to read that I do not own, well no getting through that. Must be hundreds, just usually can't get my hands on them unless buying them. And I don't have that much money. But our library doesn't have many books that I want to read anymore, plus the books they have in the original english (since it seems I tend to read a lot of english authors).. are very few.

  6. Can you imagine what it's like for someone whos first language is not english? I mean, my english is good, I have a friend that lives in England and when I go to see him, apart from the accent, people there sometimes say they'd never know it wasn't my native language. But seriously, those slang words get me confused sometimes, add an accent sometimes and well, I'm lost. :D

  7. I watched Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince last night for the 2nd time & was really inpressed with 'Jim Broadbents' rendition of the character Horace Slughorn. He was exactly as I envisaged when reading the book.

Similarly 'Andy Serkis' as Gollum in LOR.

Well, can't say for sure because I haven't read the book in a while, but isn't Slughorn supposed to be a lot bigger? In the fat department I mean, you know, I thought he was supposed to be a big guy. Also, in the film, after he's

exposed as being that sofa, he says "the stuffing comes naturally" or that he has the stuffing myself..

while the actor's not fat. His behavious, yes, he's brilliant as Slughorn, but I think they kinda went off on how he was supposed to look. Might be mistaken, have to look it up.

Haven't read LotR really, just bits. But Andy Serkis is brilliant as Gollum. :D

And I HATED Tom Cruise as Lestat. Or well, now I do, then I thought he was brilliant. But now I have read the books, and no. :D

I love Gary Sinise as Stu Redman in The Stand. :D

  8. Like I said, I looked it up so I now know what that meant. :D Google is handy for a great many things hee hee. Just funny, because in Dutch, we don't really have as many slang words and English seems to have.:D

  9. A quick question for you and it wont work unless you are honest!

Were you ever stuck behind a person in a queue in a shop and you just wanted to pay for your few items and go but the person ahead of you was paying for their item with lots of coins just to "get rid of the change", so this delayed you and everyone else as the small change was counted out individually until the price was reached!

Now i was often stuck behind such a person and am ashamed to say it annoyed me lots, i was just thinking "for Gods sake just hand her a tenner and be done!" and today i was in the situation where i wanted rid of all my petty cash and i sensed the annoyance of my fellow customers but i cant be sure.

Question is: would this annoy you or would you just be thinking "he has cash to get rid of him, fair enough"? Honesty, people!!

Doesn't really annoy me, if I am in a normal mood. I work at the register myself and often say to people, when I see they have lots of small change in their wallets, that I don't mind if they pay with that. Seriously, nothing sadder (okay there is, but you know what I mean) than an old man/woman paying with ten euros for something like 1,20, while they have a wallet full of change. Just because they're afraid people will get annoyed. :D I say, :D them and just pay with the small change.

That said, incidentally I do have these moods, when I am very cranky, that I can't stand it. But in these moods I really shouldn't go to the stores, or anywhere there are people, for then I get homicidal tendencies. :D

  10. Well I agree, in a way, just had no idea if they would do such a thing, I mean, they import those books from Tor books, and have nothing to do with the bad quality. But yeah, I've been a customer with them for years now, like 8 years or so, and never had a problem with them, so I guess it shouldn't surprise me.

  11. Ahh, almost finished now with The Dragon Reborn, and checked my email to find an email from the online shop I order my books at. I sent back the copy of The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan I had bought with them because it was horrible quality. One read and it was falling apart. :D They emailed me that I don't have to pay for that book. :D If I want another copy, another edition I have to re-order, but big deal, I was afraid I was going to be stuck with that horrible copy! Now am happy. Gonna buy the proper edition soon. :D

  12. Does Good Morning Vietnam count? I love that movie!!

Me too, about the only Vietnam film I can stomach hee hee, I really don't like them usually, as with most war films. There are just a few I find good to watch, and trust me, I've seen em all pretty much. My dad loved war movies, all sorts.

  13. ^Well I wouldn't say I find Anne Rice's work disturbing (except for when she writes horrible characters like Mona Mayfair, you'll get to know her if you keep reading the Vampire Chronicles), but her way of writing does make you feel like you're there, in New Orleans for example, you can just smell the air, feel the atmosphere etc. Though this is better is her early Vampire Chronicles, like they are better in any way.

  14. City of lost Children. A wonderful french fantasy from the makers of delicatessen.

Aww, it's good then? Honestly, I have had this film for months now, I bought it for about 3 euros, couldn't not buy it, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. :) Is like some books on my TBR list hee hee.

And you guys love films like, the House of 1000 Corpses? Haven't seen it yet, but I have heard friends of mine hate it and think it's overrated. I don't know if I'll ever watch it though, torture and cannibalism I never really like in films.

  15. Okay I have only seen it once now, but I have to say it.

AVATAR! I loved it, every minute of it. Seriously, such an amazing film. Really my thing, fantasy and sci-fi mixed. Who cares that they don't go into the science, it was finished and immediately I wanted to watch it again and I can't get it out of my head.

I think this one's going to be amongst my favourites.
