  1. 1. The Metamorphosis by Kafka: Dull short stories that are obviously designed to be dissected word for word. On the surface though its uneventful drivel. 2. Lord Of The Rings: Always get stuck on the second book due to spontaneous, awful, cringe worthy poetry and whole chapters devoted to describing the colour of nearby mountains and trees. The films are good though. 3. Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy: Got about halfway through this, which would mean I got to about page 6000. This guy needs a better editor. Plus maybe some decent plots and characters as well. 4. Desperation by Stephen King: Gave up on King after reading this. Wheras the likes of misery, IT and the Green Mile are amazing this is a cobbled together story with lifeless characters. 5. Lord Of the Flies William Golding: Had to read this at school and it bored me to tears. Thought the changes in personalities happened too quickly and therefore found the book unbelievable. Liked the themes the book was trying to put across but I feel it failed to do so due to lack of subtlety.
  2. Can't see how someone could say they don't like poetry. It reminds me when people say they don't like films or music or art. There is always going to be a poet or a particular poem for everyone just as there is going to be a peice of music or a film for everyone.
  3. I read the first story in the metamorphosis by Kafka. I really don't think it translates all that well to modern days and I really didn't enjoy it. Read about 2 pages of the title story and was getting the same feeling. Think its a book that would be ideal for a philosophy class rather than on a train home. Not going to finish it, tonight im going to start 1984! Wanted to read it for ages.
  4. Nearly finished the outsider. Its left me a bit cold so far, im not all that interested in the character, will probably finish it on the commute home though. I have just ordered 'metamorphosis' by Kafka so im looking forward to moving onto that book already.
  5. Read four of these: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown I liked the curious incident and the god delusion but if they are really in the top 100 books of the past decade than there is a lot to bed said for sticking to the classics. The Da Vinci code? Really? Lame.
  6. Did you enjoy it? Bought this a week ago but my OH is reading it first.
  7. Funny you should mention that, im going to pick up a copy from HMV this weekend. Never seen the film before as I always wanted to read the book first but never got round to it. Ive heard mixed reviews about it but im looking forward to it.
  8. Just finished 'A Clockwork Orange'. Really loved this book, probabaly goes down as one of the best books ive ever read. I already want to re-read it which is rare for me these days. Im going to resist though so its onto 'The Outsider' by Albert Camus on my commute home tonight.
  9. Watched 'Let the right one in' It looked amazing and the kid actors are brilliant. Think it may have been a little over hyped though.
  10. My OH had the dictionary in the back of her copy when she read it, she said it helped loads but I kind of like the process of working them out through the text as I go along, I am probably missing some important plot points though. May require a re-read with a printed out list.
  11. Finished to kill a mockingbird. Brilliant book, can see why you put it on top of the bcf must read list. Now about 30 pages into a clockwork orange, and just starting to get my head around the strange language. A great read so far.
  12. I'd say the clown in Stephen Kings IT. Or do they have to be human serial killers?
  13. Just finished this on monday, its a brilliant book! Might have to get the sequels as im missing the world he created.
  14. I agree with this as well. I would also add that I can't see the point of sequels written by different authors. Only the original authors truly know what a character would do under certain circumstances.
  15. Hello Dimitra. Im really liking the book so far, im up to the bit where the children have ventured around the back of the Radleys house. Very impressed with the writing style and very much looking forward to reading some more of it on my way home.

Everybody loves The Catcher in the Rye when they read it and everybody struggles to explain why. Its the most engaging book ive ever read. You will have to let me know what you think about it when you finish.

  16. Pretty much of all of Roald Dahl books when I was a kid. Think I read them all at least 3 times each. Read 'do androids dream of electronic sheep' by Phillip K. Dick a couple of times as I didn't fully understand all the hidden meanings on the first read through. Normally though I don't have enough time to read the books I want to so retreading old ground would feel like I was wasting valuable time.
  17. Glad to hear this, as have this months reading circle book arriving in the next few days. Might have to make it my next book to read.
  18. Just finished Dune by Frank Herbert this lunch time, liked the book as it was quite epic, was a little dissapointed by the ending though. Moving onto 'To Kill a Mockingbird', found it lying about in the office bookshelf.
  19. 1. Catcher in the rye - J.D. Sallinger 2. Do androids dream of electronic sheep - Phillip K. Dick 3. Frakenstein - Mary Shelley 4. The Harry Potter Series - J K Rowling 5. The Magician - Raymond E. Feist
  20. @ Kell, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami is in my basket on amazon, will get it when i next make an order, hopefully should be able to finish it by the end of the month as well.
  21. Jeez! Thats quite the welcome! Glad to see some back to the future fans as well. @ Catwoman: Apparently there is a very nice library in bromley too which is good news! Going to go and register at the weekend. @ Kylie: I nipped into borders last night to buy A clockwork Orange and it was only about 150 pages long, I was told that it was a big novel, do you know if its the abridged version?
  22. You know, it would never have occurred to me to go to a library before you said that. I don't think I have stepped into one since I was at high school. Should really see if there is one in bromley, could save me a bit of money in the long run!
  23. Cheers guys!
  24. I am a bit of a snob when it comes to reading, like some others have admitted to being, and point blank refuse to join bandwagons. Like the twilight series for example. Having said that I refused to read the Harry Potter series and the Davinci Code and caved in eventually with both of them.
