  1. Thanks for all the welcomes. Thanks. Actually , I am not that clever and it actually is my name. Minus the Lady bit. Embarassingly, my husband who has had this name all his life, has never read or seen the play!!!! Neither has his father. I find this shocking. I gave him a brief synopsis once but he wasn't really interested because it's wasn't written by Jeremy Clarkson. I have read them all several times because they are so in-depth I have to read them all again each time a new book comes out. I love them obviously. Robert Jordan has a distinctive style so you will either love it or hate it. Books 3,4 and 5 are the strongest in the series.
  2. I like to re-read a series before a new book comes out. Which means the 12 book Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan I have read probably about 7 times. Yeesh. I must admit - re-reading for me is about laziness. :blush:It's too hard to concentrate on a new book sometimes especially when I am studying other stuff. Reading is for relaxation and re-reading is relaxing. It really doesn't matter if I'm not paying attention because I already know the story.
  3. Sounds good. Problem is - will it actually make it to New Zealand? We'll see.
  4. I'm a 15 year old girl living in New York and recently found out I belong to a race of demon hunters and the boy I've fallen in love with is actually my brother!
  5. Many posts seem to indicate that an ebook is preferable for travel. I was admiring one the other day that belonged to a fellow passenger on a plane..... until he got told to turn it off for take off and landing (no electronics allowed!) Hehe. I went straight back to my paperback. I have done quite a bit of backpacking in the past (in Europe and Thailand mostly) and always have about 3 books in my backpack. I have never had trouble finding English language books and also second hand bookstores even in non English speaking countries. It was one of the most fun things about travelling - finding little literary gems along the way.
  6. Your review makes me want to read the book. I must admit, the fact that it won the Booker Prize put me off as the only other two winners I have read (The Blind Assassin and The Bone People) I thought were as dull as dishwater. (No offence to anyone who thinks they are masterpieces) Do you find the book being written in the form of letters disruptive? I have never liked this style of writing as I find it harder to get into the swing of the story. Does the book flip between narrators or is it the same letter writer all the way through? Cheers
  7. Hi there. In case you are wondering, Riley and Scooter are the names of my two dogs -they are cocker spaniel / poodle crosses aged 3 months and 10 months. I'm from New Zealand, married, no kids (yet). I'm really pleased to find this forum as I love books but have never had the time to join a book club. I'm hoping to get new ideas about good books to read as I often find my self a bit paralysed at the book shop. I want to get something new but I'm afraid of getting a dud! Books seem more expensive in NZ than they did when I lived in England for a while. Books I love or have enjoyed in the past are -David Eddings series, Sword of Shannara and the Clan of the Cave Bear as a teenager - Pride and Prejudice -a bit of chick lit as long as it is funny eg Marian Keyes, Fiona Walker, Jill Mansell - Sarah Kate Lynch who writes chick lit and is a NZ author (Blessed Are is probably her best book) - Some young adult stuff - Twilight, Harry Potter, Mortal Instruments -Time Travellers Wife - Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series - Catch 22 - my favourite book ever is The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay So mostly fantasy and a bit of romance chucked in. If you have any suggestions for me I would love it.
  8. The idea of this book really appealed to me as I am a huge Pride and Prejudice fan and not averse to zombies. However, when I actually read it, I thought it was poorly done. The characters got tampered with so badly they were no longer likeable especially Elizabeth.
  9. As a teenager I avoided any book that was purportedly written from a "teenager's perspective" as it really did feel condescending. I also used to hate it when young adult books were written in large print. There was nothing wrong with my eye sight as a teenager. In my last year of school I reviewed a number of young adult titles for the library. In the end the stories were not too bad but I would never have read them voluntarily because of the formatting. I think things have changed a bit since those days.
  10. Agree with Mazer. The Keys to the Kingdom felt like a nonsense story to me. I loved Sabriel and Lirael though. I have passed them on to others to read which I only do with books I really like.
  11. I can't remember for sure but I think it was "Under the Mountain" by Maurice Gee. It's a New Zealand book which features a pair of telepathic twins. I must have been only 7 or 8 when I read it because my nana was still alive and I tried to do telepathy with her thinking it was real!
