  1. I had a massive reading day yesterday and finished The Time Traveler's Wife.

I gave it 10/10. I just felt like I had no choice. It would have to be the most incredible book I have ever read. I was completely taken in by it and I loved every moment. I found it to be a complete rollercoaster of emotions.

I find it hard after reading a book like that with such a high level of emotional involvement to decide what to read next, so I usually go for a lightist YA style book. This time I went for Candy by Kevin Brooks. I am actually nearly finished it as well, about 100 pages to go. It is fairly enjoyable, but it obviously suffers in being compared to the Time Traveler's Wife.

  2. I know it sounds really strange, but anytime I've had a sore throat or been unable to eat solids, I go for 2 things:

    1) vanilla ice cream melted a bit by pouring warm caramel syrup over it.

    2) (and this is the strange one): I really like banana baby food.. the plum is good, too. It sounds strange to be an adult eating baby food, but I swear some of those are really good!

    That made me laugh.

At first I thought, "I wonder what is so strange?" Then I read the first point and thought "that sounds good, but not overly strange", then the baby food came in. Haha. It probably does taste pretty good though. Babies are humans after all. It's not like it is pet food or anything.

  3. hmm but that would mean watching the show would spoil the book too surely?

    Haha, I guess so.

I don't know, I just thought watching the show the first time was incredible. Remembering back on watching the Wizard of Oz as a young child and how everything tied together. I just thought that was pretty cool and I am guessing that if you read the book first you would be deprived of that.

  4. I'd like to see Wicked, think I'd want to read it first though

I actually think that would kind of spoil it a little. It is the revelations throughout the show that make it so great IMO.

  5. Yes I've seen it twice and really want to go again but the theater is so expensive :D

I saw it once in the UK and I have flown down to Melbourne to see it a few times since. Having to pay for air fares, accommodation and tickets certainly makes it a costly exercise though. :)

  6. Has anyone seen the musical Wicked? I love it, the songs are awsome! Among other favourites are:

    The Sound Of Music

    Oliver

    My Fair Lady

Wicked was the first musical I ever saw. I loved it and have seen it several times since.

  7. Catching me up on your reading now Dan. Glad you're getting through some enjoyable books. :haha:

LOL, not quite Ben. I have actually been really slowed down by work lately. It took me around a week to read the second Charlaine Harris book. Maybe if I actually worked more at work instead of browsing and posting on this forum....

  8. I have only read two of Dan Brown's books - this one and the Da Vinci Code. Of the two I definately preferred Angels and Demons though. I can definately see why the Da Vinci Code held such wide and popular appeal, but I just felt that Angels and Demons was the better read.

  9. I finished Charlaine Harris' 'Living Dead in Dallas' over the weekend.

Overall it was a pretty enjoyable read. I have been a little busy and stressed out with work lately so I have just been in the mood for a book that I can come home, read and enjoy without it making me think too hard, and this book is pretty much perfect for that. I didn't think Harris built the plot quite as well in this book as she did in the first book of the series but nonetheless I enjoyed it for the most part. I rated it at 7/10.

Next up for me in 'The Time Traveler's Wife'. I am really looking forward to this book given the great reviews it has received pretty much everywhere. I read the first 40 pages last night and enjoyed the style so I am sure that I will love it.

  10. Wicked would be my favourite. I first saw it in London when I was over in the UK on holiday and I have seen the Australian production 4 times down in Melbourne.

My other favourites are RENT, Spamalot, Spring Awakening, Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of the Opera.

  11. :) I can't believe no-one has mentioned Testimony? It's the best book I've read this year. Granted I've only read 10 () but it was such a powerful and thought provoking book.

Oops, sorry Lexie, didn't see your question. I've only read two of Shreve's books so I'm not sure. Testimony was similar to Picoult in the sense of showing different perspectives though.

I really enjoyed Testimony as well. Excellent character development throughout the whole book.

  12. My favorites:

    R.E.M.

    Pearl Jam

    The Who

    The Cure

    Fiona Apple

    The Verve

    Screeming Trees

    Mother Love Bone

    Rufus Wainwright

    Metallica

    Alice in Chains

    Nirvana

    Keane

Good god, I can't believe another MLB fan actually exists. Did you get into them through Pearl Jam?

  13. I finished 'Bitten' by Kelley Armstrong last night.

I expected quite a lot from this book given all the great reviews I have read for it pretty much everywhere, including here. About half way through it I must admit I thought I was going to be bitterly disappointed with it. I was really struggling to establish any meaningful connections with any of the characters and the story just seemed to be dragging a little to me. I don't know, perhaps I have read too many of these types of novels lately.

Anyway it did pick up in the second half and I got through the last 250 pages much quicker than the first 200, which is a good sign I guess. In the end, whilst I felt it was an enjoyable read, it kind of fell a little short of what I expected. I have put the second book in the series on my wishlist. I will make a decision after that one whether to continue reading them.

    My rating: 7/10.

Next up I am reading Charlaine Harris' 'Living Dead in Dallas'. Perhaps not the wisest choice given my comment about having read too many of these types of novels lately. I just don't really feel like reading anything I have to think too deeply about when I get home from work at the moment.

  14. Hey there.

FWIW I have definately had more motivation to read since I have been reading this forum.

I don't read much true fantasy but my younger brother is completely obsessed with Robert Jordan.

  15. I first read Twilight in May 08 and have read

    Twilight ~ 4

    New Moon ~ 3

    Eclipse ~ 3

    Breaking Dawn ~ 3

And that was just from May - Dec last year :) I've yet to read them again this year, how about you?

Good god. Do you nearly know them by heart now?

I have read them each once and enjoyed them. I don't usually read books twice. If I did, I think I would have to wait for a fairly long period of time before I tackled them again.
