  1. Isn't it funny how we're all different ... I think it would feel odd to close my eyes!
  2. Forgot to take my reading glasses to work today. My eyes aren't too bad with my normal glasses, but I did have to sit further back from my computer at work to be able to make out the font … then had to increase the font on my Kindle to MASSIVE so I could read at lunchtime. Glad to be back at home with them on now and actually being able to see the screen clearly.
  3. I'm just watching the highlights now! I already know the result, but I was at work, so only saw the scores, so it's quite good to watch some of the play this evening.
  4. It was raining this morning, but it's turned into a lovely afternoon with sunshine, although a bit blustery. Smashing
  5. Still only managed another couple of chapters of Prudence today. I am loving it, but I'm just too tired to concentrate on it most of the time and don't want to ruin it by drifting off while reading!
  6. I've wish listed it, but have plenty of books on TBR and not reading a great deal at the moment, so not sure when I'll get round to it, but I will definitely read it at some point.
  7. Not sure if you've seen these, Noll but I favourited them on Twitter a little while ago and I think you might like them: https://twitter.com/CNET/status/574605530267783168/photo/1
  8. Thanks Chrissy, I've downloaded it to give it a go at some point.
  9. Cold. Not freezing or anything, but definitely cold.
  10. Sorry for my lack of response so far! Reading through the comments, here's some of my thoughts. For Dorothea's marriage, and whether a longer engagement would have changed her mind, I think it was not only if she'd spent more time with him, but also if she'd been exposed to wider society, which over time she would have done. It seemed to be that she had very few married couples in her social sphere, and that lack of visibility led to her views on what a wife was, and that she was looking for a father substitute rather than a husband in Casaubon without realising it. I don't think she would have been too stubborn to break the engagement at a later stage if she'd understood more about marriage and her future husband, as that necessary extra experience may have also seen her grow and mature, but if she had still led her sheltered life with her sister and uncle, she may well have still made the same decision and married Casaubon. Book 2 definitely picked up the pace, and it was interesting to meet the new characters, but then also go back to others towards the end. I'm intrigued as to how many more characters we will meet and if all of them will continue to appear throughout the later books. As Easter is coming up and you have other plans, are we okay to go with three weeks for reading book three? That would take us up to the 12th April.
  11. Lazy dinner tonight - quorn burgers, oven chips and baked beans.
  12. We've just had a hail storm.
  13. I bought The Peregrine for my other half a few years back, and wanted to read it after he'd finished. He's never got round to reading it, so neither have I! I might have to just sneak it off the shelf.
  14. We'll have to agree to disagree about Gilead. I read it a few years ago for my book group - I've just dug this bit of my review out of the archives: I don't remember it in detail, but I know I struggled to keep going, but that's probably because I'm like my books to have a strong plot, and I don't often do well with character studies. From what I remember, in our group discussion, some people absolutely loved it, but it was definitely one that divided opinions amongst us.
  15. A Woody Allen film I actually managed to finish watching without walking out! (Although, Owen Wilson might have had something to do with it ) I thought it was pretty good.
  16. I read a couple of Anna McPartlin books a few years ago after you recommended her, and I remember thinking they were great, but I've not picked up any more since. Thanks for the reminder, I'm off to look up the rest of her work to wish list!
  17. I always keep my eyes open at the dentist. I tend to look at the ceiling tiles … not exactly riveting, but that's what I do. Either that, or I look at the reflection in the safety glasses they put on me!
  18. Thank you Despite the fact I'm loving it, it's still slow going, and only managed a couple of chapters during my lunch break today.
  19. Back to work today, and not too bad a day, although I did struggle to concentrate and stay away while I was reading my book at lunchtime. Looking forward to an early night!
  20. Just about to make myself a cuppa tea
  21. In a way, I'm glad she's not planning on revisiting the world, as it leaves it open for me to *hope* for a better future!
  22. I think it was Darwin's attitude that made me wonder where this came from in him … whether it was just the experience of the way he saw women treated, or whether someone he'd had contact with had planted seeds of doubt in his mind, or perhaps he'd found some underground type of media, like a pirate television station or something. I guess it's just my desperate hope that the humanity in all of us would come through in some way, and stop or rail against the oppression.
  23. I got the impression that the Father originated the programme, and that it was within his lifetime, and the girls in frieda's class were in the 600 numbers, so assuming 20-30 per year, I would assume that the cloning programme had only been running for 30 years at the most. It's difficult to judge really, as there isn't enough information about the rest of the society, let alone the rest of the world (other regions are mentioned but that's it), but I think I just desperately wanted to believe that we couldn't become that oppressed, and that while there was no hope for this class of girls, that there might be a glimmer in the future. I don't think you missed it at all, there were a few glimpses of the outside world through the television/media, the occasional comments from the boys, and the odd mention of other regions (I think I remember some mention of a Chinese or Asia region, and also an American region), but that's about it.
  24. What's you favourite goto book when your mojo deserts you, Chrissy? Mine is currently an audiobook series … the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger
