  9. Some one on a podcast recently recommended setting yourself a target number of pages to read each day.  They said 50 pages per day, but they were talking about novels which are generally easier to read, but it you went for say 25 pages per day, that would be 500 pages in just under three weeks which for a difficult book, does seem quite so daunting.

  10. Enjoying mooching around not doing much in my downtime between Christmas and New Year. :D  We've been having our annual Christmas games tournament and I'm currently in the lead 16-9, and hoping to win for the third year in a row.  We just play kids games like Tumbling Monkeys and other board games but it's nice to have some time just to mess about and be silly. :giggle2:

  11. Today, I bought a bunch of books, and I've managed to update all my spreadsheets and my book blog thread with all the details. :)

I've also read another two chapters of The Dark Is Rising with two chapters left for tomorrow, and read another chapter of 21st-Century Yokel and I'm now going to start another fiction book to read alongside it. :D

  12. Well I was a very lucky thing and received lots of books for Christmas!  However, my other half usually buys me a selection of children's books, but bless him, he's been so busy decorating that he didn't really have much time for shopping, so we agreed I'd just go out and get myself some today.  I actually had two full stamp cards and a lot of points on my reward card at Waterstones, so I got four books for no money whatsoever!  They didn't have a a couple of books I particularly wanted, so I also popped into my local indie bookshop who had one of them in stock, and bought that one and ordered the other, and also bought an impulse purchase too.

    Received for Christmas:

    1. 21st-Century Yokel by Tom Cox

    2. Adventures in the Screen Trade by William Goldman

    3. Corduroy by Adrian Bell

    4. Hidden Nature by Alys Fowler

    5. Letters of Note by Shaun Usher

    6. Ma’am Darling by Craig Brown

    7. The Secret Life of the Owl by John Lewis-Stempel

    8. Watling Street by John Higgs

    9. Father Christmas and Me by Matt Haig

    10. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Today, I bought myself these middle grade books:

    1. Christmas Dinner of Souls by Ross Montgomery

    2. The Explorer by Katherine Rundell

    3. The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club by Alex Bell

    4. The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place by Julie Berry

    5. Sky Chasers by Emma Carroll

    6. Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone

I've already finished The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden and The Secret Life of the Owl by John Lewis-Stempel, and am halfway through 21st-Century Yokel by Tom Cox.

There's only one problem with receiving all these wonderful books ... I want to read them all NOW!!! :D  There's just not enough hours in the day, even with being on holiday until the New Year.  I almost wish I could just open the books and absorb it through osmosis so that I can have read them all, as they all look fantastic.

I had to do exactly the same!  I read it two or three winters ago, and found it completely gripping, and really well written (6 star read).  So glad you're enjoying it too.

On second reading I would definitely rate it 5/5, it’s just wonderful.

Is that the The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper?

Yes - I’m about three quarters of the way through and enjoying it more than I did on my first read!  Such a perfect winter story, and it’s lovely to read it at the time of year the book is set. :)

Sorry to hear that you are not enjoying The Bear and the Nightingale (book 1 of Winternight Trilogy), the debut novel by Katherine Arden. I found the book fascinating and full of Russian folklore, history, and magic. However, the book is probably not for everyone although it is a National bestseller in the U.S.  Arden's storytelling is wonderful even though quite a bit on the dark side. The 2nd book in the Winternight Trilogy, the Girl In The Tower was even better and I rate it a 10/10. I am anxiously awaitingr book 3....Winter of the Witch.

I liked the story itself, but something about the writing and pace just didn’t suit me.  Sorry.

  16. On 16/12/2017 at 2:08 PM, muggle not said:

I just finished reading the debut novel by Katherine Arden and heartily recommend it. I am now reading The Girl In The Tower (book2 of the trilogy) and even though I am only 50% complete I give it a 10 rating. Michelle, I think you would really like the books

I’m reading this at the moment @muggle not, and finding it a bit of a chore.  I can only read a couple of chapters at most before I have to put it down.  The only reason I’m going to keep going is because I’m reading it for my next book group meeting. I’m just about to start part three, so another 100 pages to go.

I desperately want to finish it soon and concentrate on the other book I’m reading at the moment, The Dark Is Rising which I’m re-reading as part of a Twitter read-a-long that started on Wednesday (Midwinter’s Eve) as that’s the same day the story starts.  It’s a coincidence but both stories are set in winter and have a basis in folklore but for me, TDIR is totally compelling to read and I’m forcing myself to put it down after one or two chapters and savour the reading experience of it!
