A strange and somewhat morbid question
kay_loves_purple replied to Galactic Space Hamster's topic in General Book Discussions
I went a bit further one of these days. I was sort of sad for about two days if not more once I realized that when I die I'll miss all the good books that are going to be written after. For some reason a) I realized this now when I'm almost 30 and it saddened me to no end. On the other hand, who knows, perhaps heaven is like R. Matheson has imagined it in What Dreams May Come (the book), one of my very favorite books and my favorite "image" of afterlife ever. Unfortunately I don't remember the details (which added to the charm) but it was something like there were galleries and libraries with all the masterpieces ever painted/sculpted or written, even better than the ones on Earth as they were as they were in their author's mind (which isn't always perfectly put on canvas or paper, as that depends on the actual skill of the author). Now that's the kind of Heaven I'd love to go to -
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind

I remember I was quite confused about the movie ending too I was glad to find it explained quite nicely in the book, so don't worry, it all makes sense -
That is so cool. I've never had the patience to add a third column on my own so I deeply admire you for that Would you by any chance want to add your blog to my directory, the one in this thread? <---- shameless plug, I know, but since you have a book blog and I'm trying to start a book blog directory I just had to ask; feel free to ignore me if you think it's spam

Um, I really liked the idea of having that quote there. It was quite original (plus a lovely quote). I think you should change the archive type to either flat (and then it'll fit the sidebar) or to drop-down menu (and then you could keep it up as it won't grow anymore). Doing either of these is very easy, you just go to edit layout, press edit on the archive gadget and then choose your option. Perhaps you should experiment a bit with it to see which one you like best.
-
Yay! I love it + I find quite interesting the idea of adding only one post per page. Only suggestion I have is that you might want to move the archive to the sidebar, otherwise it'll keep pushing your actual content down (in time, as it grows).

I'm from Romania so I was happy to discover there was an option I could check (Other European country), and even happier to see I wasn't the only one checking off that option Yay!

Such a great idea! Congratulations on becoming a blogger! First thing I did was to add you to my blogroll LATER EDIT: Oh, and if there's anything Blogspot-related you need help with, do send me a message, I've been using it for years now so I just might help.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind
kay_loves_purple replied to Nellie's topic in General Fiction
Having read this more than a year ago, I'm happy to have my review of it to look at and remember (click to see it for yourself ) What I do remember out of the top of my head is that I did like the book although I wasn't particularly fond of the hero. I found the most interesting the effects the smell seemed to have in people's perception to the ones around them (as in, Grenouille had no smell so he was never noticed by people, to cite but an example). Other than that I have to say that I absolutely loved the movie. Very colorful and did very much justice to the book (in my opinion of course). -
I totally agree, I know many people who absolutely love the book -- then again it did nothing for me. Which isn't to say I do not like Coelho, on the contrary, I loved both Veronika Decides To Die and Eleven Minutes. But The Alchemist I just didn't manage to like. Perhaps I wasn't in the right mood or something.
-
I have a huge list of books I plan to read (87 on the last count), and I will read those (in no particular order, as the mood strikes). I will, of course, add to the list all throughout the year (so probably half the books that are on the list now will still be there this time next year due to newcomers and the random order ). Nothing fancier than that.

Worst ever film from a book?
kay_loves_purple replied to kateleopald's topic in General Book Discussions
Wow. First of all many thanks for the link, as I'm always curious when I hear about an interesting movie if it's the adaptation of a book I might read (usually books provide more depth than the movie so they are more worth checking out, in my opinion), so the list is pure gold for me. Other than that I've only wanted to mention that I thought the DaVinci Code movie was pretty decent (and some beautiful special effects too). Truth is I don't think that (turning the book into a movie) was very had to do as it's been written very like a movie from the start (or so I thought). They could have gotten poor Tom Hanks a different haircut in the movie, I wholeheartedly agree, but I managed to get used to it after a while -
How Many in your TBR Pile
kay_loves_purple replied to aromaannie's topic in General Book Discussions
As a coincidence I counted my TBR pile books a few hours ago, so when this thread came up, I just have to add in my number: 81 (which will probably take me the whole 2009 plus I'm making huge efforts not to add more as I keep seeing promising titles everywhere ) -
Not only I am on Shelfari but I have also joined the group Seems a bit unused lately (ever?) but oh well. PS I can of course understand why you all prefer LibraryThing to Shelfari, because LT was first and you are used to the way it works; as for me, my first site of the kind was Shelfari and I am more fond of using it than not (it offers blog widgets too, yay), especially when it comes to managing my TBR pile

Hi Charm
Yes, I'm quite settled in by now and I am enjoying the forum tremendously. Not only I have found a few threads talking about books I have read and liked (or not), I have also gotten quite a few suggestion of books to add to my TBR (I'm always on the lookout for new good books, not that my TBR is in any need of new additions).
In short I'm having a great time here. Thank you very much for asking

The most disturbing work of fiction that you have ever read
kay_loves_purple replied to Oblomov's topic in General Fiction
Gerald's Game by (who else) Stephen King. With a couple somewhat into bondage, where the husband ties the wife with handcuffs to the bedposts, and then has a heart attack and dies. Leaving the poor woman tied and with no easy way of escaping. Which wouldn't have been a problem in itself, what bothered me is the way she eventually escaped. So yucky/gory/awful it made me stay away from King's books ever since (and I used to be quite a fan, I read more than half of everything he's written) -
How was 2008 for you reading wise?
kay_loves_purple replied to ~Andrea~'s topic in General Book Discussions
So far this year I've read 72 books. My favorites were: To Say Nothing of the Dog - Connie Willis <--- the book that made me discover Connie Willis which is one of my favorite authors so far (I've also read her Doomsday Book and Passage, looking forward to get my hands on Lincoln's Dreams) The Quincunx - Charles Palliser <--- I was "wow-ed" by this book, by its complexity and its Dickens-like style Admit One: A Journey Into Film - Emmett James <--- a very fun and captivating book The Other Boleyn Girl - Philippa Gregory <--- yet another author whom I enjoyed discovering and who's now among my favorites (I've also read her The Constant Princess and The Boleyn Inheritance) The Book of Lost Things - John Connolly <-- loved its world of twisted fairytales Twilight and the rest of the series - Stephenie Meyer A special mention goes to: Out of Africa - Isak Dinesen <--- surprinsingly so not like the movie First Blood - David Morell <---- also surprisingly not like the movie (the first in the Rambo series) especially because , which mightily amused me given that it's the first in a series of four, sharing the same main character -
Worst ever film from a book?
kay_loves_purple replied to kateleopald's topic in General Book Discussions
I have added the book to my ever-growing TBR pile nevertheless. Even though I have read some Asimov myself in my younger day and I too have the impression his writing is pretty dry (but there is a probability I don't remember correctly, as he was my favorite author for a (pretty short) while, so he must have something for me to like ) -
Worst ever film from a book?
kay_loves_purple replied to kateleopald's topic in General Book Discussions
Really??? I am very surprised to see this, as I have actually loved the movie. Had no idea it was based on a book, now I'll have to track it down and read it -
Oooooh, I loved Salem's Lot, it's one of my favorite King books (and one of the few books of his I read more than once), and I am not particularly into vampire books. I'm glad that you liked it yourself. I don't remember that much about it right now, but the part I liked most was the idea that the cross is nothing on its own, without the faith to support it (while the cross itself is present in many books about vampires, the idea of it being nothing but a symbol and worthless by itself was pretty novel to me in the context -- which I found cool) PS Were we allowed to comment on this thread? If not, feel free to delete this

I'm halfway through Midnight's Children now (was so curious about it as many of you said it's utterly great so I bumped it first on my pile) -- I can see why it's a masterpiece and very interestingly written (it's like everything in the book, including the writing, follows the pattern of being made out of fragments); however I find the story in itself advancing quite slowly, so I am not sure whether I actually do like it. Better yet, I think I would have absolutely loved it had it been about half the size (but then a lot of its feeling of many colorful fragments would have been lost). As you can see I'm still in two minds about it, I'm looking forward to see how everything will develop and how I'll think about it in the end.

Have you read a book in one sitting?
kay_loves_purple replied to Colin Jacobs's topic in General Book Discussions
I read plenty of books in one sitting, especially when I was in high school and used to spend half the night reading. Unfortunately I cannot remember the titles I can remember the latest such stint, a few months ago, with Twilight. Having no idea what to expect I have begun reading the book at about 10 pm as I was getting ready for sleep. To my surprise I couldn't put it down so I finished it at about 3 or 4 in the morning (don't ask me how I felt later at work ) I've spent nights (since working) up until about 3 a.m. reading for only one other book, that I found fabulous and that I truly recommend (Phantom by Susan Kay) -- I have tried really hard to finish it in one sitting but it was too long so it took me about two or three nights Those were times... -
The only book of McEwan's I have read is Atonement. I have to say that I have rarely read an ending to bother me that much (making me even hate the whole book for a (short) while). Now, while I consider the fact that it made me feel that strong about the book a very good thing, I don't know whether to dare and try another one of his books because I have found Atonement a bit to dry and dragging at the beginning, it didn't captivate me easily at all, so I'm afraid the next book would be dry too (at least up until one moment which I am not sure I'll have the patience to reach). Nevertheless Enduring Love sounds great, I might try it sometime

Thanks It's been looking exactly like this ever since April so it's about time I got working on it again. It is true that it takes a lot of time (the completed sixth took me a bit over two months and I usually finish an 1000 pieces puzzle in about two days or less), but the joy of fulfillment is increased too. I know just the puzzle you're talking about as I've contemplated getting it myself. I bet it's beautiful when it's done so if you do start working on it make sure to post some pictures every now and then, I would love to see them
