  1. I actually studied Satan as a literary figure for an English seminar last year and I have a lot of notes on both Paradise Lost and The Divine Comedy, if you'd like me to see if I can dig out some links and things? It's mostly like secondary reading, articles and journals talking about aspects of Milton, Dante and (mainly Satan, within) their works. They're both very interesting when you get into them - the detail is all well and good but looking at general themes and approaches is very benefical as well.
  2. I loved how the camera-knocking bit was done! Thought it was a really nice touch really. I didn't see the wolf in Carlisle's bowl! Must look out for that
  3. I didn't think the knocked over camera bit was a secret, I thought that was obvious! And I noticed the wolf on Jake's shirt too. The rest are neat little things to note though!
  4. Got three awesome book sets today, I'm delighted! Firstly, Shakespeare's complete works in three hardback volumes. Pretty set. Secondly, Titantic: the story & facsimilies of various documents - reports, specifications documentation, register papers, telegrams, letters, etc. Fabulous collection. Thirdly, Oscar Wilde - "A Life In Letters", edited by his grandson, Merlin Holland. Not a book which was on my biographies list but for €9 it was an awesome find, because it's a collection of Oscar's personal letters for all sorts of things from throughout his life - arguably more revealing of his true character than anything he ever said, because he was always working to keep himself mysterious. Utterly thrilled with all three purchases - it's an awesome haul.
  5. Since 2004. It's seriously, seriously good but it'll mess with your head - Shane Carruth is a mathematician and he made the movie so that all the pieces to work out the main puzzle to an acceptable level are there, but some bits are insolvable and some parts have never been agreed on by anyone.
  6. Awwhh bless. Well either would have been a great winner!
  7. Do They Know It's Christmas is way better! But I'm into political/social commentary Christmas songs. Which is why I love Tim's song, and why I love Happy X-Mas (War Is Over), I Believe In Father Christmas etc etc etc.
  8. Wait wait this is getting back into X Factor only discussion, which belongs in the other thread. Joe FTL.
  9. Sometimes I think it gets a bit taller.
  10. It scares us all, Tom:lurker: I'm kidding, obviously
  11. I can't believe you actually started your own reading thread Gratz! I have my shiny new one for 2010 locked at the moment, in theory I have a couple more books to read before the new year! Battle Royale is a very good book, apart from the poor translation in places. It's a good book to 'study' in conjunction with the movie and extracts from the manga series, because of being an usual story it has aspects suited each medium, and I imagine the comparison is something that would itrigue you
  12. Phantom is a brilliant book. One of my favourites and highly underrated. I love the musical also, which I saw prior to the book and it's very different but enjoyable all the same. The Historian is also awesome if not a little tedious. You'd want to be REALLY into your history to not get bored, but personally it was just my cup of tea.
  13. Tom you can talk forever about any subject can't you
  14. Yeah Rick Astley should totally get Christmas no. 1. "Whennnnn I.......................ffffalll in love..................................it will........ *10 hours later* beeeeeee.............. foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrr". Nah I love Rick Astley. Wait, this is not on topic.
  15. Good lads. Tim to win. I mean... what? I'd love if someone else did usurp the title at the last minute though
  16. SRSLY Okay Mod-Noll time: Joe vs. Zack discussion only henceforth.
  17. Which is completely contrary to saying you won't swear on day time radio, and then swearing on day time radio. Glad we're in agreement
  18. I hate people acting 'rock and roll' though. Usually it's a bunch of ponces acting cool when they're really not. Most people grow out of the 'saying bad words to provoke a response' thing when they hit about 9 or 10 years old, if not younger. If you're still doing it at 39, then you're not cool, you're sad. Being cool is actually being very respectful of other people despite not necessarily agreeing with them, if you're in their environment. Like debating a topic maturely, rather than screeching your case over the top of the other person.
  19. That's a good point, but when it's going to charity it's kinda good that they're promoting it.
  20. It's called lying. I don't agree with radio censoring at all, I think the station should just NOT play songs they deem offensive rather than cutting them. And if Rage had said, 'no, we're not going to play it unless we can play our full version' I would (somewhat ironically) say fair f**ks to them for standing by their song. But to say they won't swear, which presumably they had to do when asked repeatedly not to swear, and then to do it, is not expression, it's lying and making yourself look bad.
  21. There's a fun irony in asking Zach not to swear during Killing In The Name Of, given the actual line. Having said that, the only thing worse than a teen-esque song about a rebellious attitude is actually adopting that attitude while performing the song. Granted, the radio station shouldn't play it if they're not going to play it properly, but the band shouldn't agree to it and then swear. That's childish - just refuse to do the live performance.
  22. There's one part of it still bugging the hell out of me because it makes no sense, but according to the maker all the answers are there in the movie.
  23. Blair Witch is great Tom. It's actually underrated because people are too busy overrating it 'because it's not true'. It's still done very well. I watched Primer last night, and will again tonight. Epic, epic timetravel-based hard-SciFi movie filmed by Shane Carruth and his family and friends on a budget of $7000. One of those classics that needs nothing but the sheer genius and enthusiasm of it's creators to make it amazing.
  24. I edited my post.
  25. Killing In The Name Of was cool when I was about 14 and starting to say 'no' to my parents. Anyone who otherwise falls for the hype of things like X Factor.... well lets just say it's not making a point to anyone worth making a point to - the people worth making the point TO are the ones making the point. And it's a good point, but use a nice song. Oh and regarding Tim Minchin - there are 50 other weeks in the year when the UK and Ireland don't have Christmas no. 1s. Forgive me for suggesting an actual Christmas song should have the benefit of one of the two weeks (one in either country) where it would actually fit. Killing In The Name Of can be number 1 for the other 50 weeks for all I care, but I'm into Christmas and to me Christmas is about what Tim's song is about, and what Band Aid's song was about, and what The Darkness' song was about - those are the KINDS of songs which should be number 1 at Christmas.
