Today I spent ten minutes wrestling a tin of tuna that did not want to be opened.

I wonder will that happen to me? Not planning on eating any pizza any time soon, but I'm sure I'll eat it again in the future. I suspect my stomach might object after a while of going without, but I think I'll still love the taste.

I'm rediscovering one of my childhood favourite shows, Upwardly Mobile. Irish comedy show about two... common Dubliners who win the lotto and move to a well-to-do area, to the dismay of their new neighbours. Absolutely terrible show, no idea how it got made. It has always been impossible to find anywhere online, but it seems someone uploaded a load of episodes to youtube last year, so now I'm working my way through them.

I just finished The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Love, love, love. I'll post a review shortly in my book log, but I'd definitely recommend this one.
I have read that, but I can't remember a thing about it.
Today I picked by Angelfall by Susan Ee in my charity shop for €1.50

Yeah I can start reading it maybe at the weekend or just after it.
-
Yeah I'm super skeptical about this. Will also wait on reviews.

Everyone says that, but nobody who likes him has ever explained to me what the fuss is (in their view).

I decided to try that short story, because I've only read one book by him (Norwegian Wood) and I hated it.
I just don't get it. People LOVE Murakami. But I just don't get it, and I wish I did. What was the point of that story?

I'm going to start reading Wool this month, as it's the pick for an facebook book club being run by my favourite radio DJ. Was told about it a couple years ago, but never got round to it.

Well, I just accepted a job working from home taking phone messages for doctors. I start Monday which means I have some work to do making my tiny apartment into an entire home as well as an office.
I'm so happy to finally be working towards something again! The pay isn't outstanding, but its a job and it has insurance and the cat won't have to deal with being alone all day.
Hope everyone feeling ill feels better asap!
Oh that's brilliant Abby, well done! Hope it goes well for you

It has been wonderfully cold in Ireland for the past couple of weeks. It has snowed a couple of times at night, doesn't settle though. Absolutely loving it - every time I start to get agitated about being too cold, I just recall how last summer even the shower water on fully-cold was lukewarm and I had no way to cool down whatsoever. Long may this cold last!

Great review of The Guest Cat, that's one I've been thinking about reading soon. Glad you enjoyed it!

Awesome, I read The Egg alright and quite enjoyed it, I'll have to check out his other stuff.

I still have not organised my book shelves. Not since I mentioned it a couple of days ago, and not since I moved in 9 months ago
I get these grand ideas in the middle of the night but by the time the following day rolls around my attitude is comprised of 'meh' and 'can't be bothered'.
Hopefully I have a friend coming down at the weekend, if his girlfriend doesn't object to him not spending the weekend with her. I hope she doesn't, I haven't seen him since November.

Great review! So glad you enjoyed The Martian. I thought an alternative title could have been McGuyver in Space.
Just snagged Where the Trains Turn from Amazon for 99 cents!
Haha! He was definitely that!
Nice review, glad you enjoyed the book.
Thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed the book ! Great review. I have the book on my wishlist, though I could also see if my library maybe has it. I hope to read it some day, at least .
Thanks
I hope you do too!
In other news:
I got mail!
...Apparently I got sideways mail.
Anyway it's Longbourn by Jo Baker, which has been on my wishlist for a year or two now, and thanks to Janet who graciously sent me her copy I HAVE IT! And there's a lovely handwritten letter that came with it. I love things like that, I think if someone ever sent me something without a little card or letter I'd feel like they'd done it very begrudgingly
I'm reading the final Harry Potter book, and also re-reading The Book Of Lost Things by John Connolly because it has been a couple of years and I know I loved it.
I've also been browsing the book reviews of one of my favourite Irish DJs, Rick O'Shea - he reviewed 100 books last year and it was his first year doing it properly and officially. He read several titles I already love, but many many more I've never even heard of, including plenty by Irish and seemingly Japanese authors (I'm guessing by their names), two areas I've been meaning to read a lot more of. So, I've taken down about 15 of those out of 30 for my wishlist, and no doubt will go through the rest later
EDIT: My first post since I've returned in which I've had to cull emoticons!

There's lots of books on your TBR that I don't know, but one I do is The Martian- Andy Weir. I listened to it last year and really enjoyed it. I think quite a few people here have read and liked it too.
I just finished that a couple of days ago - great book.
-
That's awesome Michelle, congrats! I voted on the one I could find you on
-
Shame you didn't enjoy it, I like the sound of the premise, but not so much the book after your review.
-
Any idea which paper that was printed in? They should be named and shamed.
Not a clue, sorry, but googling a phrase or two from the excerpt might bring it up in full somewhere.

I acquired two more books yesterday.
As ever, this non-book-buying isn't going well.
The second I ordered for a friend for her birthday but it didn't arrive in time, so I bought her a different book in Tesco so I'll just have to keep this one myself!
I put it on my wish list after seeing it in Waterstone's in Exeter between Christmas and new year - I liked the sound of it, so keeping it isn't a hardship.
I looked at Elizabeth is Missing the other day, so will be keen to hear your thoughts on that one - whenever you get to it!
I read it a couple of weeks back, and enjoyed it. Was a tad underwhelmed plotwise but absolutely brilliantly written and worth reading for that alone. (Review's in my thread if anyone wants to read it.)

I'm at home much more than you Claire .. considering you've got a full time job you do outstandingly well (a lot of mine were MT too.) Plus you're an efficient and consistent reading machine. I'm more your all or nothing type
Twelve books is very respectable .. I would have given my eye teeth to have read twelve in any one month last year .. the nearest I got to it was nine but I had to hammer the books to my head to get them read
I think the jar is helping too .. it's actively urging me on at the moment. It probably won't last .. January is often my best reading month. I get so stressed in December that people leave me alone in January .. like it's some sort of recuperation time
I usually do so well in January coz it's about 11 months since I last read anything

Whoever wrote it should be fired.

Hmmmmmmm. Not mad about dated science fiction. I did really like another Bradbury book I read though, Something Wicked This Way Comes - I think the plot was 'good', by my reckoning, but I *loved* his writing. So maybe I will!
It's all your fault, Steve!
