When we flew with Ryanair last summer we had to pay extra for hold luggage..

That doesn't bother me. Ryanair primarily deal in shorthaul flights, and if you're paying €60 for a return Ryanair ticket that would cost €130 (these numbers based off recent Cork-London flights I looked up) with say, Aer Lingus (as good as British Airways) and if you have to pay even the most expensive hold baggage of €35 with Ryanair, and none with Aer Lingus, you're still saving over €30 by going Ryanair.
