  5. I can forgive silly decisions if it fits with their character such as a moment of indecision following an argument or not actively looking out for the stalker when your dog has just been poisoned, that kind of thing. We all do daft things at times, so that can be forgiven in our fictional characters. What I loathe however, is a sudden personality change in an established character, be it in a series or in a single story that occurs without an explanation, but leads to a detrimental situation. Things such as a character suddenly changing morality or displaying a completely different set of personality traits, without a darned good explanation is too much.
  6. Oh yuck Shelley, I hope you feel better soon. No wonder you aren't reading much - too busy fighting off illness!
  7. I do most of my reading on my Kindle now and have found that the cover has little bearing on my choice, whereas in tree book form the cover does colour my decision making, despite knowing it's not logical. I have been drawn to books because of their covers, but will 'back up' my attraction by getting a feel for the book through it's back cover blurb. If the blurb confirms the appeal then I make the purchase. Pink and pale purple are cover colours I avoid as are pictures of stiletto heels or heaving breasts and muscly heroes, as Romance isn't a favoured genre. Additionally I will not take much notice of overly macho covers. I want the publisher to draw me in with a fairly neutral cover coupled with intriguing blurb that makes me want to open the book and read.
  8. Muggle Not, where for art thou? I feel as if I haven't 'seen' you in ages. X

  9. I thought District 9 was a great film, managing to be original and thought provoking.
  10. I hope you feel better soon Devi.
  11. I think they are Young Adult books, although I didn't realise until I was quite a way into it. The age of the main character is what made me think that it might be! I tend to pick a book based on it's appeal to me rather than it's designated age group. It looks like I am drawn to the YA quite a bit at the moment though.
  12. 12) Sanctum by Sarah Fine & 12a) Captive by Sarah Fine "My plan: Get into the city. Get Nadia. Find a way out. Simple." A week ago, seventeen-year-old Lela Santos's best friend, Nadia, killed herself. Today, thanks to a farewell ritual gone awry, Lela is standing in paradise, looking upon a vast gated city in the distance - hell. No one willingly walks through the Suicide Gates, into a place smothered in darkness and infested with depraved creatures. But Lela isn't just anyone - she's determined to save her best friend's soul, even if it means sacrificing her eternal afterlife. This book startled me with it's fluid pace and great descriptions. Lela is so well drawn the reader immediately forms a bond with her, despite her stubborn and sometimes foolish ways. Throughout you know where heart's compass steers her. I was drawn to the central premise of the book when I had read it's description and am glad I followed my gut and bought it, as it's an original and quite compelling story. I don't want to write any detail as I loved reading it and having the story unfold in front of me, rather than reading it with too much foreknowledge. 'Captive' is a few chapters long and recounts aspects of the story from another point of view. 13) Fractured by Sarah Fine Following the events of 'Sanctum' things have truly been turned upside down, and the fight that Lela had been engaged in in the earlier book has been transported to this life, this time. Life for Lela is no easier for her, with this fast paced story propelling the reader edge-of-the-seat towards it's conclusion. All I can say is that I am looking forward to next instalment in this Young Adult (I presume by the age of the main characters) series.
  13. Hey gorgeous! Missing you. XXX
