  1. I love both types of stores. I love a comfy rummage in a thrown on the shelves and stacked to the rafters type second hand shop, but also relish the "Oo isn't it smart and tidy and shiny?" of the fresh new book sellers.
  2. Fortunately I've only experienced half pages and torn pages, rather than entire ones. This meant that I didn't miss too much of the action. When I read your post Susie I thought "Doug? That's an unusual name for a girl." I then read the post properly!
  3. Linda Gillard's 'Emotonal Geology' is beautiful, moving and emotionaly rewarding, while her 'Star Gazing' is sublime. Audrey Niffenegger's 'The Time Traveler's Wife'. Clever central premise, but no doubting the love!
  4. I love this trilogy! The next two will really take you places too. Have you got 'The Subtle Knife' and 'The Amber Spyglass' ?
  5. This is as simple as the title suggests. Just come in here and share any words you learn that are new to you. Here's mine for today. Calque : In linguistics a calque or loan translation is a word or phrase borrowed from another language by literal word-for-word translation. Wikipedia gives the example; 'the comon English phrase "flea market" is a phrase calque that literally translates the French "marche aux puces". Now all I need to do is to find a sentence into which I can use the word!
  6. 1) I love grapes, although I don't eat plum skins as they usually taste bitter. Texture of food wise I'm fine though. 2) I would love to have my fingernails properly painted by a proper nail person. This is despite having very short nails. 3) In my dreams I am faster and taller than I am in real life. I also always have longer hair in my dreams. 4) My favourite ever pair of shoes were purple suede. I loved them dearly, and wore them to death. 5) Despite only working part time, and having no 'at home' children I rarely have time to spare! I am yet to fathom why this is.
  7. That's sounds completely delicious! Any chance of PM'ing me one?
  8. That's it, blame the innocent book! Sure it wasn't the fact that you were falling head over heels for a certain Will Trent and your growing lurve was making you daft?
  9. FOUND IT! Here's the thread on 'A Spot Of Bother'
  10. I'm fairly sure that Joe has read this one, but I can't find a review on it by her or anyone else.
  11. Everybody Wants To Rule The World ~ Tears For Fears
  12. The term 'bad guy' I took to being used in a non gender specific context. And a nice bottom is essential whether the bad personage is male or female!
  13. We definitely got to hear about OJ and his trial over here, and I do recall hearing something about this tasteless and offensive book. I cannot imagine how Nichole Brown and Ron Goldman's families must have felt about it.
  14. I think that pretty much sums it up for me too! There should be a level of devious genius, an immorality that doesn't quite reach cruelty, but has an edge that suggests that my bad guy could be cruel if he so chose. A sense of humour is a must, and I want absolutely no hint of petulance. I want my bad guy to be self aware, creative and to have a code of honour, even if that code is not quite on a par with the good guys. Hannibal Lecter has a lot of these aspects for me, but his cannibalism took him too far to 'the other side'. I remember at one point in one of the Thomas Harris stories that he leaves a certain guard alone when he escapes. He does this because the guard always treated him with respect, and this was how he repaid him.
  15. We're shiny!
  16. The website Belief Net had some pretty interesting articles regarding Harry Potter a while back. It was interesting to read them. I'll have to dig out a link.
  17. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues ~ Elton John
  18. I love the way it just decides to lie down and roll over, as if that's all he had planned to do anyway.
  19. Oat cakes with thin slices of cheese.
  20. Y'know, I was looking forward to reading yours Raven! I just knew it'd be a good un!
  21. My first bestseller ( ) would be dedicated to, To P & M, with a special mention to S. Together they shaped the adult. To M & D and A & R, who shaped the child. Thereafter I'd go with witty, cryptic and downright odd, with the odd quote or verse thrown in!
  22. Welcome back, and congratulations on your promotion!
  23. Love, love, love Joss Ackland, he has a fabulous sense of the ridiculous! I am watching the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. So far, so fascinating.
