  1. We are a friendly community of readers here, and although we are often happy to help with member's queries, we are not a resource for school/college/Uni work for people who are soley using us as such, and who have not taken the time to become active members. I am therefore closing this thread and ask you to take a little time to read our rules and guidelines regarding the forum, before posting again. Thank you.
  2. It sounds like it could be a Mike Gayle book, or perhaps a Nick Hornby, or even a Tony Parsons. You haven't got much to go on there, so it's not too easy to guess, but the above three have writtten on similar topics. Good luck!
  3. I've not read the book, but would be interested in doing so especially as he did write it himself. Whether you agree with Bush's politics or policies there were / are plenty in the USA and the wider world who did agree with his politics. I think that if you are to read politcal memoirs, those of politcians from 'the other sides' can be more informative, revealing and interesting than those from your own 'side'. A kind of "Heck, I know what I think and why ~ let's see what makes that lot tick"
  4. If I read and enjoy a book, I will look out for more by the same author definitely. I do remain open to new books and authors through whim or recommendation though, so hopefully I am not closing myself off too much by avidly following certain authors.
  5. Hello Vicky.
  6. Welcome to the forum. An excellent introduction there Rick!
  7. I'm currently reading the second Cassandra Clare Mortal Instruments book, and thoroughly enjoying it. I also see you have a few Septimus Heap books, and I have to say that I loved them.
  8. Sausage Hot Pot is a firm favourite in our house. 4 - 6 sausages, grilled 1 Onion 2 Leeks 4 Carrots 1/2 Swede 8 New potatoes Tin of Tomatoes Dash of Chilli sauce Dash of Worcestershire Sauce 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds Optional additions/alternatives include chopped peppers, celery, mushrooms. Throw all the ingredients into a deep casserole dish having chopped all the veg into similar sized chunks, add the sausages and top up with vegetable stock to make sure all the ingredients are covered. Put in the oven, covered for an hour or so, or until the vegetables cooked through. Served with hunks of homemade bread.
  9. Just finished Cassandra Clare's 'City Of Bones' , and really enjoyed it! A good story, fast paced and very visual. Just what my flagging mojo needed. I plan on starting on the second book in the series tonight, 'City Of Ashes'.
  10. I'm a end of chapter reader, or end of section where the chapters are extra long.
  11. It rang a book bell in my brain, although I don't think I've actually read it. Glad it's the right one.
  12. Could it be 'Island Of The Blue Dolphins' by Scott O'Dell?
  13. You know how sometimes you hear a book / some books being mentioned and for some reason you feel compelled to get them? There is a possibilty that 3 2nd hand (but in great condition) books arrived for me today. Cassandra Clare's 'City Of Bones', 'City Of Ashes' and 'City Of Glass' arrived. Despite the many, many, (far too) many books waiting to be read on my shelves I got these.
  14. Lovely review Brida, you have confirmed this one being on my Christmas wishlist.
  15. You run your own forum at the age of 14 ~ that's not boring! I think it makes you a bit of a superstar!
  16. Thanks for the link Pickle. I cannot believe that someone took the decision to allow the book to be advertised and sold through the site. It just beggers belief.
  17. Holy Cr*p! I can't believe it exists, and I can't believe that amazon are selling it. I would go check on Amazon UK, but I would hate that title to be in my search history. I do hope it's some kind of joke, or a study, or anything other than what it appears to be from the title.
  18. I drive a 12 year old Rover 400. It drives like a tank, and sounds like a tank. Most of my driving is local country lanes, and we use husband's car for long journeys.
  19. That does sound really interesting frankie, I will ahve to look out for that.
  20. Hi mountainhiker. I only noticed your query for the first time today. I would have expected myself to know loads, but actually haven't got a lot to suggest. I can most definitely recommend 'A Lifetime Burning' by the excellent Linda Gillard. It has affairs, and then some. A really useful resource if you are looking for a book similar in style to one you have read is this site. You pop in the authors name, and get a series of further authors who write with a similar style/outlook. That might give you a few ideas. Another place to visit might be fantastic fiction. Again tap in the author's name, or the book name, and at the bottom of the page you are presented with, you will have a 'authors similar to' bit. Good luck finding what you need.
  21. I am listening to my husband read some bits from the paper. He starts with "Did you read this that says......?" and we chat about it. I know it's naff, but we enjoy it!
  22. You guessed mine, and posted within 2 minutes of my posting the clue! Miss Lightning fingers!
  23. I've tried doing this Mac, but it doesn't look like it's possible. I will flag the notion up in the staff room, and see if anyone can find a way to do it! Stay tuned........
  24. I think this pretty much sums up how I feel. I would add that I felt, despite doing what he did 'for love', it was a possessive action rather than an action inspired by his feelings.
  25. Hey, you could at least pretend to ponder it! Ha! It's your go!
