  1. Is noise allowed? The TV or the children? Noise doesn't bother me I completely zone out, sometimes I even listen to Classical music whilst reading but never music with lyrics. Indoors or out? Morning or Evening? Anywhere, anytime. At the moment a good deal of my reading time is during me 4 hours round trip commute which I do 5 times a week. I read most evenings too as I'm not much of a TV watcher. Do you read on sofa or do you prefer to snuggle in bed with a good read? I love to snuggle in bed, my husband always manages to get the sofa. Is a cuppa close to hand? Do you feast while you read? I often make a cup of tea as I sit down to read, and I almost always forget to drink it. I always have a book or two on me. I read on the toilet too, my husband is merciless in his teasing about it insisting only men are meant to do it. In my defense I have quite a few food intolerance's.
  2. Hi Lisa Marie look forward to your updates, we share quite a similar taste in books. I've just finished the 4th Harper Connelly and about to start the Sookie Stackhouse series. What book are you on with the Lincoln Rhyme books? I up to book 6 but took a bit of a break and so far haven't got back to them. Hope you Enjoy The girl with the Dragon tattoo, the best book I've read in years.
  3. I don't use Libraries at all mainly because of the hassle of getting to one, I may as well go into town and go to Waterstones as the selection is greater and I don't have to wait weeks or even months for the latest titles plus I get to keep them to add to my own future personal library. But I do take the toddlers I nanny to the library once a week which they love so I do still visit them.
  4. Hi runner if I pluck up the courage I will let you know.

You sound much braver, maybe you should go first...

  5. Ooh brave, the adverts alone terrify me. Think I will have to read it during the day.
  6. Think it could be classed as supernatural. I'm interested to see what peoples opinions are of this book it's in my TBR pile, from what I've heard it's meant to be very creepy.
  7. I hope you enjoy it, IMO it's the best so far. Lets hope there won't be to long to wait for a 5th.
  8. Currently Reading Fallen by Lauren Kate, I'm on page 90 and not getting into it finding the characters rather irrating and the writing style too, there is only so many times I can read that the Luce is Embarrassed/blushing/awkward/humilated etc etc it just seems so cliched and rather poor writing skills almost like the writer though ah yes teenage girls the excruciating years and has to constantly remind us of what it's like to be a teenager, as if she has no confidence in her writing of Luce to be able to communicate it to us without constantly spelling it out for you. But I like the idea of the novel so I'm trying to perceiver. Also dipping in and out of Howard end is on the landing and loving it, will write more about once I've finished it.
  9. Finished books 2,3 and 4 of the Harper Connelly series by Charlaine Harris. Really enjoyed these books, they were lights reads that I could devour in a day. Book 2 was a fairly light read with a simple plot, with Harper and Tollovers relationship getting some more focus. The relationship between them is interesting enough to keep me wondering how it was going to to grow and change without it disturbing the development of the plot. The Mystery side of the series for me really took off in book 3 An Ice cold grave, for a short easy read this was a dark tale of a serial killer targeting young boys some of the scenes depicted left me with goose bumps and was far harder hitting that what I was prepared for keeping me gripped. The 4th book, Grave Secret, plot finally sheds light on Harpers missing sisters fate, the plot is more intricately woven than the previous books with misdirections and twists galore until the climatic end that left me rather surprised. I dearly hope there is a books 5, I'm very interested to see how the revelations of book 4 effect Tolliver and Harpers and wither it changes them as people or even as a unit, I'm also interested to see how Charlaine Harris takes the series forward with the series getting gradually darker.
  10. I started this yesterday, I really want to love it but I'm just not getting into it and finding the characters irritating at times. I'm on Page 90 is it worth sticking with it?
  11. I agree with that, if there is constant sex throughout a book then it can get in the way of the actual plot, if the plot that is isn't to do with sex. Lady chatterley's lover, has a lot of very graphic sex throughout it but in my opinion the sex is central to the whole novel therefore it isn't gratuitous but I know many others feel it's just too graphic.
  12. Just wondering what people consider gratuitous sex? Just a general idea, no need to go into detail.
  13. Have you read The Bridge of San Luis Rey By Thornton Wilder set in Peru The synopsis from Waterstones: An ancient bridge collapses over a gorge in Peru, hurling five people into the abyss. It seems a meaningless human tragedy. But one witness, a Franciscan monk, believes the deaths might not be as random as they appear. Convinced that the disaster is a punishment sent from Heaven, the monk sets out to discover all he can about the travellers. The five strangers were connected in some way, he thinks. There must be a purpose behind their deaths. But are their lost lives the result of sin? ...Or of love? Sounds boring but honestly its a lovely little book of beautiful prose and rather spiritual. Historical Peru is almost a character herself, alongside the mini histories of the dead. Can't recommend it highly enough.
  14. Just seen you reply thank you for those suggestions I will have a look on audible, I had no idea there was so many!
  15. Sex in books doesn't bother me at all, it part of life leaving it out can mean loosing out on part of the characters personality making them a little less 'real' to me.
  16. I loved The Gargoyle too, for me it was the best book I read in 2009. It took Davidson 7 years to write so it may be a long wait till his next, however long it takes I eagerly await his next effort.
  17. I've listened to that version of His Dark Materials the kids who narrate Will and Lyra are fabulous, I did prefer the Unabridged Philip Pullman version but this version too has it's own merits. In particular it's much more accessible to children in introducing them to some of the philosophical questions it raises whilst being quite action packed to keep them hooked. I'm not currently a member of the Library but I do have a membership with Audible its only
  18. Hi Raven I've been watching Dr Who these last few years, one of the few TV programms I watch, but I've never read the spin off books or listened to the audio versions. Is there one in particular you would recommend?
  19. I love Austen so I'll check this version out. I agree it's essential to listen to a sample to see if you can enjoy listening to the narrator for the next 10+ hours.
  20. Just wondering if anyone else listens to Audio books? I've only recently started to listen to them although I've mostly listened to books I've already read. I really loved Philip Pullman reading His Dark materials Trilogy compared to Jonathan strange and Mr Norrell which seemed to drag and came across much more flat in audio than it does in book format. The only book I've listened too that I haven't bothered to read is We need to talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver narrated by Lorelie King. Kings emotionless narration was perfect for the cold distant Eva I got the impression that I got the fullest sense of the plot and characterisation that reading it wouldn't have added anything new to my own opinion/feelings on it. I would love to here of other peoples likes and dislikes regarding audio books.
  21. Hi MrsM welcome to the forum I look forward to hearing your thoughts on The blind assassin, I've been meaning to read more Margaret Atwood for a while now and many people have recommended this book. I've got Angles game on my TBR list too, looks like a very interesting book.
  22. I'd forgotten about that bit!
  23. I really enjoyed this book too, especially the 'operation' scene funny in a cringing ' oh please no' sort of way. I do think some people are a bit hard on it, mainly due to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time being utterly amazing, but it does have it's own merits especially the portrayal of George. So glad someone else also appreciates it.
  24. If I'm just in for a wander or to pick up a novel quickly about 30mins, but sometimes I have book shop days when I go in with plenty of money to buy whatever takes my fancy. I make sure to go to a big bookstore to wonder slowly around all the sections choosing a pile of books, I have a little read of them to make sure I like the writing style then decide what's coming home with me. Then I have a coffee and chose which book I'm going to start first. The length of time of that type of visit is usually around 4 hours.
  25. My choices are: 1. Lyra from His Dark Material trilogy by Philip Pullman. 2. Marianne from The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. 3. Charlotte from Charlottes web by E.B. White. 4. Lisbeth Salander from Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson. 5. Cecilla and Robbie from Atonment by Ian McEwan.
