  1. I love the thought of electronic readers for ebooks, but they seem to be a little expensive still, hopefully that changes in the not too distant future... I have an EeePc, that I bought mainly for reading ebooks, but of course, it does so much more, it's basically a mini laptop. Anyone else have one of these? it's such a neat toy! I can fit a pile of ebooks on an SD card.. but that's maybe a little off topic.. sorry.. Of course, I will never stop buying and reading -real- books too, but my storage space is limited, and I think ebooks are the way to go for me. I like that I can change the font size onscreen, and as I age, my hands appreciate not holding a book for hours at a time too. I don't mind sitting here at the pc with my feet on the desk, one hand on the mouse.. and I take my EeePC with me when I leave the house.. Anyone interested in a couple of good sites that offer free ebooks? Totally legal of course.. I've seen good ol' Project Gutenberg mentioned here, love that site - anyone else ever proof read for them at Distributed Proofreaders? I used to, but haven't had time recently.. if you are into scifi/fantasy, Baen Books have a free library at http://www.baen.com/library/ and Munseys is good as well: http://www.blackmask.com/ both sites offer free ebooks in multiple formats.
  2. this last book was such a disappointment for me.. it seemed so rushed, especially towards the end, and that last -19 years later- did not satisfy at all.. maybe i felt like that just because it was the last one. i could have read a lot more of these books. altho, imagine the movie makers, if faced with a never ending story line! lol.. i have enjoyed all the movies so far too.
  3. just chuckling here.. and g'day mate! we aussies are everywhere! chuckling because i know only too well what you mean... my husband prints them out too, so i head into Borders with two coupons, my husband takes one of my choices to the checkout, and i usually end up with a trilogy.. there's no hope for us hey? i don't go to the book exchange often, and i don't always have books to exchange, i just buy them. give away my books? never!! altho i ws in a book club, and bought a few books i really did not want to keep, thought i may as well swap them out..
  4. oh yes! i enjoyed this trilogy too... i have forgotten to look for more of her books.. thing is, i get distracted so easily in bookshops..
  5. my books are mostly scifi, fantasy, and crime fiction.. altho i also have lots of other stuff, including classics, and lots of ancient history books.. i also like old books, altho it's been a long time since i have browsed in an old book shop.. my treasure is a copy of Boccaccio's Decameron, it's over a hundred years old now.. and some children's books that are even older..
  6. most slimmer books i can read in a few hours, say 300-400 pages.. so yes, i've read lots of books this way.. i am lucky i do not work any more, so if a book grabs me, i will just read till i'm done...
  7. wow! so many welcomes... thank you all! this is surely a busy forum! 195 unread posts since i was last here, just yesterday! when do you all have time to read books as well?
  8. altho i would put this down to my own personal taste, i have always thought the Ender series was over rated.. my own personal favourite would be The Songmaster, a stand alone book.
  9. fennel!! i saw this vegetable on a cooking show, and realised it's been in the supermarket veg section all along.. so bought some, roasted it with the rest of the veges, and loved it! the aniseed flavour is not very strong, and it tastes a little like cabbage as well.. i really like this!
  10. i'm more the sort that thinks both should be considered separately.. altho i do try to read a book before seeing the movie when i can, as i can imagine the characters and settings without having the movie dictate that to me.. altho, of course, i can never even look at a Harry Potter book without seeing the movie characters now.. same with Northen Lights (Golden Compass) and even my old Anne of Green Gables books have suffered the same fate.
  11. i don't skim, but i do read fast, i can finish most slim volumes in a few hours, thicker books might take me a few days.. depending of course, on just how much free time i have. i never skip ahead!
  12. thank you for the welcomes! phew.. i have been reading posts, and still have 1594 unread! lol... i think i shall mark all posts as read, and start anew...
  13. i'm a big re-reader of books, which is one reason i keep so many of them.. can't remember how many times i have read Dune.. or the entire Anne of Green Gables series - that really takes me back to my childhood.. talking of childhood, someone else here mentioned lots of Enid Blyton books, i read them too from time to time.. also the Abbey Girls series, (EJ Oxenham) i only have three of those, but i had more when i was a kid.. i'd love to find more of them..
  14. i get my books from where ever i find them! bookstores, newsagents, charity shops, second hand or book exchanges.. i cannot go past a book sale! i also buy ebooks online, or download free classics or old pulp fiction.. i like Borders' coupons too, they come in email weekly, and always look at the bargain shelves there!
  15. my husband is the sort of guy who steers me towards book shops when we are out shopping, and just smiles when i see a book sale, and stands back to let me at it! lol... he never minds i buy lots of books.. it helps that i no longer work, and can read all day if i want to, while he is at work..
  16. yes, yet another newbie here.. hello all.. i'm an aussie, from north of Sydney, New South Wales central coast area.. i've always loved books, mostly i read scifi, fantasy, and crime fiction, but i do venture out from time to time and read something else.. i'm a bit of an addict as far as buying and keeping books as well, and i never lend them out! i'm practically ancient now, so you can imagine perhaps, just how many books i have stacked in the room i lovingly call the 'library'. cheers!
