  1. @ Roland I really love the South of England - this is why I always return there for vacation - but I think the North should also get a chance
  2. I'm also a member of Library Thin now That's really a great page - great idea that one can see who else has read the same books and that one can bookmark interesting libraries:bookworm: My name there is phoenixs (had to add the 's' because the other version was already chosen by someone else)
  3. Thanks a lot for your replies. I already know the Harper Collins ones but I think I heard that they haven't published all of Agatha Christie's book. But I'll check again. I didn't know Tom Adams yet - the books do really look great. I might start getting some of those even if he has not illustrated all of them. The covers are really s.th special:)
  4. Hi, I just found this thread - it really sounds great and I would love to join but I have a very similar personal challenge at the moment and not yet sure whether this one is colliding or harmonising with it. I'll just add my personal reading challenge idea to this thread. May be you want to add some of those books to your challenge. What I started doing some months ago is reading books from winners of the nobel price of literature. There is quite a good website from the nobel foundation itself: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/index.html So far, I have read books written by: Doris Lessing Elfriede Jelinek G
  5. And then there were none is also my favourite Agatha Christie book - though I really like all of them very much. I already have a couple of her books and am thinking of getting them all. Does anyone know whether there is a pubilshing house that has published all of them, so that one can get the books as a series?
  6. I'd love to read an autobiography by Queen Elizabeth I. I'd like to know more about the time she lived in, the poeple she met (Shakespeare?) what her thoughts and feelings were about her situation (marriage?) and the world in general. It was a fascinating and cruel time she lived in and I would really like to know how she experienced it. But I'm afraid reading her autobiography is one of the dreams that will never come true
  7. I am really impressed by the number of people welcoming me on this forum. @Susanne Rendsburg is about 100km north of Hamburg. How did you daughther like it? I hope they made some nice day trips and had some good whether to go to the sea side. I am definitely considering spending my next England holiday further north. I have already read so many nice things abouth the areas you mentioned and am being told again and again how friendly the poeple in the north are. But as I have just returned from Canterbury and London last month I'm afraid that some time will pass until my next holiday. @Roland Butter It's always nice to see how many poeple have connection to my home town. Have you evey been here or in Germany in general?
  8. @madcow The huge C&A store got renovated some time ago and is even nicer now. You should think of coming back @Susanne Thanks for the nice welcome. I've been to Muenster once for 2 days and really liked it. I don't know Morecambe though as I haven't been to that part of England yet (East Anglia being the northernmost region in England I have been to).
  9. Wow - that sounds really great! I wish you a wonderful day there and am curious to hear how you liked it and which books they recommended to you - and after some time it would be great to hear whether you liked their books. I also hope that this idea spreads...may be I should start telling all the book sellers I come accross about it
  10. I also loved The Shadow of the Wind very much. It was one of the books I rushed through because I couldn't wait to see what was happening, so I guess I will re-read it in order to get all the details. I didn't know though that the prequel will be published. May be I should get that when it is out and re-read The Shadow of the Wind afterwards.
  11. Wow - thank's a lot for this nice welcome!
  12. Hello! I did a google search today in order to find an English book forum and here I am. I already read some of the threads here - it really seems to be a great forum and I'm happy I found it. I am 30 years old and live in Hamburg, Germany. I like reading books in German and English - prefarably classics, crime fiction and fantasy. I have quite a lot of books at home and started to give at least those away I did not like at all as I do not know anymore where to leave all those books. I haven't been really successful in reducing the number of books though as I just cannot pass a flee market or a bookshop without having a look at what they offer. Also, I mainly give my books to a second hand book market - you can either get paid for the books there or chose books to take home - not only for the price they would pay you but for twice the price... I guess you know which option I usually chose. I look forward to joining your discussions. Regards, phoenix
