  1. We are a brutal nation, you have to be with -20 Celsius degree days in the winter (like today)... With a stick in the eye, it'll get your adrenaline going, and you'll survive the cold elements
  2. $10 a month is a bargain, especially with no long term contracts! Did you go? How was it? I haven't gone yet myself, but I might when I get a bit of extra money
  3. I hope you have a smashing reading year, Alexi! And good luck with the 1001 Books challenge Oh boy, you have ^ so many amazing reads ahead of you, I'm jealous that you get to read those books for the first time!
  4. I hope you have a really amazing reading year in 2016! I like the sound of The Truth and Other Lies, it's going on my wishlist
  5. I hope you have an amazing reading year in 2016, Anna! Ooooh, NICE! Which edition did you get?
  6. Ain't that the truth! This Christmas my Dad asked me if I've read the book that he gave me for Christmas the previous year... Sadly my answer was 'no' Hey, good luck with the brackets thing I'm seconding chesil: the relaxed no-pressure approach to reading is always the best. If you started getting more organized on here, I'm sure that would be effort and time away from something else. Like, your jokes on FB. And I for one couldn't take it if you stopped producing those! Edit: Almost forgot: Have a really great reading year in 2016, Ian!
  7. I'm so, so happy that you loved A Tale of Two Cities, it's been in my top 5 novels ever since I read it! I found it tough going for the first 70 or so pages, but after that it was riveting
  8. Do you have a computer program called Paint on your computer? If you do, just open the picture you'd like to use as your avatar on it, and then there's this 'resize' option in the row of icons, and then just change the 100 and 100 to maybe 50% and save the picture, and then try if it's small enough to use as an avatar. If not, you could try reducing the size again. If you ain't got any time for that, I'd be more than happy to do it for you if you want! Just send me the picture you'd like to use
  9. I wish you a great reading year in 2016, Jessi! These were all wonderful reads! I hope you enjoy them a lot I think my TBR stands at 303, too, at the moment, so we're in the same boat TBR-wise! I'd really like to have a smaller TBR pile.... Good luck reducing yours!
  10. I hope you have a great reading year in 2016! At least it seems to have started off great, with a 9/10 read!
  11. I wish you a smashing reading year in 2016, Diane! I noticed you had Big Little Lies on your TBR pile. I just read it in December and really enjoyed it and didn't want it to end. I hope you will like it very much, too!
  12. I hope you have a wonderful reading year in 2016, tunn! A few comments on some of the books on your TBR pile... I simply loved and adored A Man Called Ove! I hope you will enjoy it! Fingersmith is an excellent novel and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it when you get to it. There were things in the novel that I did not expect... I'll say no more. Too Close to Home and the Chelsea Cain novels were all great thrillers, some of my very favorites!
  13. I know what you mean! Unsettling is a very good choice of words
  14. I hope you have a really wonderful reading year 2016! You still have some of your books in the attic? I really enjoyed Pygmalion. I thought it might be a difficult read, what with it being an old work of literature and a play. But it was very readable! I hope you will enjoy it
  15. I hope you have a great reading year in 2016, VF
  16. I hope you have a wonderful reading year in 2016
  17. Hello and welcome to the forum!
  18. Are you enjoying the weird? Edit: I'm so tempted to re-read the book myself!!
  19. So when's your very own read-a-thon happening? I might like to join you If possible. Wednesdays is a bank holiday over here, and the weekend's not too far away... :D Yes it's only Monday. Oi! Hold your horses, woman I'll get to it when I have time!! I'm not very far in yet, so I don't know... I'm liking the writing, as always, but I still feel like I need to get more into the story before I can really tell what's happening and how I'm feeling about the book. But then again, I find this a very common pattern with Koch's books I'll probably love it by the end Seconded!

    Hi All!

    Hello Jessi and welcome back!
  21. But oddly enough, Wikipedia doesn't always even list the books an author has written. Even if the author was world famous. I was going through some books earlier and couldn't find the info I needed on Wikipedia so had to google for other websites. So thanks JeanW for the tip, I will have to try and remember the website in the future! I'm positive I've seen a few members on here talk about the website before. Edit: Wikipedia also sometimes lists the work of an author according to the different series they've written, and therefore the lists aren't always chronological. Fantasticfiction is better for finding novels in a chronological order.
  22. Yesterday I watched Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, which was okay. Not anything spectacular, and not something I'd normally even watch, but it fit my mood yesterday. Didn't like the rushed ending, though. Then I also watched Sharknado that was on TV It started right after SDfN. I certainly hadn't planned on watching Sharknado, but then I saw Ian Ziering was on it and watched for a few minutes and then had it on the background. It was quite hilarious I liked the filming though. Nice edits and scenes and cuts. Felt really old, though: at one point Ian was meeting her daughter and I'd expected a 5yo girl to turn up, but it was someone who was around 20 years of age. !!! Oh lordy.
  23. Friday: ... 77 pages of A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig Saturday: 84 pages of A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig, thus finishing the novel ............... 36 pages of Summer House with Swimming Pool by Herman Koch
  24. So excited that you started this. It's very '???' Isn't it
  25. Did you enjoy writing the summary for the year? I always enjoy doing mine for some reason or another It might seem a bit nerdy but I don't care: it's fun to look back! I would dare to guess you feel the same way It would be really difficult to just stop buying books altogether, go cold turkey. In fact I would say it's pretty much impossible. It's something one needs to work on gradually. You should be proud for doing so much better this year than last year! Wow, I think it's cool and kinda funny that you almost read the exact same amount of books that you owned and that you borrowed from the library Very coincidental!
