  1. Oh my, four votes so far and they are all 5/5! I'm mighty pleased everyone's liked this book so far! Although of course there will be other opinions too, later on, and all opinions and ratings are welcome I will first post my own answers to the questions and then read through all the posts above and comment. 1- Who was your favourite character? Were there any characters whom you disliked? I don't think I liked any character 'all the way through'. And I don't think I had any real favorites. As far as their likability goes, I guess I liked Richard Papen and Francis the most. Richard seemed the most sensible of them all, even though he went with the group in the end. And I found I sympathized with Francis for some reason. He seemed like a good guy and I wish he'd gotten some proper action I disliked quite a few characters. I disliked Bunny for being such a greedy, manipulative person. Such shamelessness! And I disliked Henry, he was so cold and calculating. Although I only realised that afterwards, or later on in the story. In the beginning he seemed one of the likable characters... I didn't really like Charles, and I couldn't get any kind of grasp of Camilla, either. But I think with this kind of novel, it didn't matter that I didn't have any clear favorites and that I didn't like anyone, unconditionally. 2- Was there a particular part you enjoyed more than the rest? I don't remember liking any particular parts. The whole book was so thrilling and enjoyable. Although I have to say that the most intriguing part was everything that happened before Bunny's death, and the events of his death. The second part which dealth with the 'aftermath' wasn't as equally riveting but very enjoyable still. 3- Did you like the writing? I did. I read the book in Finnish and the translation was very good, I don't think anything was lost in the process. 4- Was this the first book you've read by this author, has it encouraged you to read more? This was my first book by Tartt, but this was a re-read for me. I read the book back in 2005, and I loved it that time round, too. It's one of my favorites and has been on my personal frankie recommends - list I was a bit afraid that the book wouldn't be as good on a second reading, but it was. It really was! I'd also been afraid that I would remember most of it and it would truly feel like a re-read, but miraculously I'd forgotten quite a lot. When I started, I remembered that the group killed Bunny, but I didn't remember why. Then when I was a good deal into the book, I remembered the other major part of the book, the catalyst of the later events. And I didn't remember any of the events after Bunny's death. I didn't remember if the group was caught or not. So in that way the rest of the novel was very intriguing. I never remembered Henry killed himself That shocked me. When I first read the book, I don't remember if Tartt had already written The Little Friend. But I did find a copy of it later on and wanted to read it. I never got further than 100 pages and I've heard that it's not as good. That the ending is disappointing. And the book is very very long, so I don't know if it's worth it. I'm not sure if I want to read The Goldfinch. 5- Were there any parts/ideas you struggled with? Not really. I think I might've struggled with the different backgrounds of the characters in the 'group' had I not read the book once before. 6- Overall, was reading the book an enjoyable experience? It was, very much so. It's a book I've been wanting to re-read for a while and I'm really happy that it was chosen for the reading circle! I did worry that my mojo might not be up for it, or that it might be a bit dull because it was a re-read, but I needn't have worried, I was captivated!
  2. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one, phew! Haha, the whole of the second half of the year I was behind, too, and by the end with more than 20 books, but I still liked seeing the percentages and stuff! Not liking this new system at all. I guess it takes time to get used to it.
  3. I haven't actually counted the pages but I did read a good chunk of The Secret History and thus finished the book.
  4. I've finished my first book of the year! Shouldn't be so giddy though, I was suppose to finish it ages ago... It was the Reading Circle book, The Secret History. I'm so behind on it (Have had numerous distractions last week so haven't been able to finish it earlier. Also, Mom's coming to town so have to go out with her, and can only get to the RC business later today.) What a great book. I shan't say any more about it, I'll save it for the RC, but I'm very happy to have started the year with such a great read. And coincidentally, 2013 January RC was also hosted by me, and I liked that book, too, so I'm feeling oddly nostalgic and deja vu-esque I'm happy we had snow in 2013 January, because The Tenderness of Wolves book definitely needed some snowy surroundings. The Secret History not so much.
  5. Okay... I will cook us breakfast, but you will do the dinner, okay? Sounds marvellous! (And every other day is book shopping?) Okay, minus one day! You guys are too perceptive for my own good! You already knew this, but she's a keeper That is very lovely Thanks Julie! I'm still getting around to other people's logs, haven't been to them all! I hope you have a great reading year 2014
  6. I do like the idea of tackling the TBR in bite size portions... I think it gives you the feeling of being more in control. Clever! Good luck with your Classics and Non-fiction challenges I did manage to read the amount of classics I had hoped to read in the beginning of last year (3 titles) but that was all, and it was a bit disappointing. I've been avoiding them classics for too darn long, me thinks. Good luck to you, too! Chesilbeach's TBR 0 mission was very inspiring, she really made me think about my book buying ways. Ooh!
  7. Has anyone else noticed how different the 2014 personal reading challenge widget is? I don't like it at all... It only shows the amount of books you've read, and doesn't say how far behind or how far ahead you are. And this is petty, but... Blue is my favorite color, but that blue is not nice and I much preferred last year's colors... I know, I'm so petty!!

    Book News!

^ I bet she was only sick and tired of hearing the same thing. She's an author, writing is hard, and then you get people moaning about the books in a series. Don't start reading a series if you know you aren't able to wait patiently! Edit: Ha, for some reason thought I was in the Book Activity thread and almost recorded my BA
  9. That's a great set of books you are currently reading! I'm looking forward to your review on the Virginia Woolf book as well as the Burnt Shadows. I hope you have a great reading year 2014, and I'm very much looking forward to your reviews as always
  10. Awwww That's priceless! He'll be an avid reader... Or at least a book eater! A bookworm!
  11. It's Michael knocking on Pam and Jim's door early on a Saturday morning, trying to peep in through the peep hole... And Jim finding out about it

    Jogging Diary

That's awful news, muggle not I hope she recovers soon! Not doing jogging, although I could because we have no snow... My running shoes could take it! But I don't have a suitable coat I did some Zumba this week, though, and have been doing walks.
  13. I hope you have a great reading year, Ruth! You always write wonderful reviews and I'm always inspired by your log
  14. Well yeah, the dog, and toast... Who needs more? And you liked it, so that's recommendation enough for me...! And yet I respect Kylie's opinions, too, we have similarish tastes, but she didn't say she disliked it, did she? No. So I'm inclined to like it, still Of course, we will never know until I read it. Oh, maybe I should bump it up on TBR pile... There are so many books that deserve a bumping! And the 13 books borrowed from the library don't help. And the one I'm currently reading, and then next month's RC book... Luckily the library loans are all children's books, so they will be rather quick reads. My cunning plan has worked... Nobody's noticed my post about my recently acquired books! I should always just mention them in between tons of other posts... ! Cunning.
  15. I hope you have a better reading year this year, and reach all your goals! Enjoy
  16. Wohoo for enjoying the book! Oh heck yes he's written more I would suggest you read Dry next, it's about his 30s or so. And then there's A Wolf at the Table, which concentrates on his relationship with his Dad. That's one dark book, and it's not as 'lightly' written as RwS. But it was great. He's also written a few books where he talks about different sorts of things. Kind of like essays. I would recommend those, too. And his first book was a novel, which I really enjoyed, too. It was called Sellevision. Here's the thread on him on BCF. Looking forward to seeing how you like his other books
  17. Actually all my stuff is pretty much on here, and I just copy+paste stuff from previous reading logs I do keep a document on my computer of all the books I own. Whenever I acquire new titles, the first thing I do is add them to the document. Then I add them go Goodreads, and then to my lists on here. Oh and I do keep a 'manual log' of books read Meaning, I have a notebook where I've recorded all the books I've read since 1999. I think if the house was on fire, that notebook would have to be one of the things I would have to try and save... *fingers crossed it never comes to that!* Thanks, and I hope you have a great reading year, too!
  18. Ah! No, my mistake, I understood the sneaking away wrong... Clever one! I hope you can work the quotes out tomorrow. If not, just ask me again.
  19. Yeah I noticed it after I posted and edited my reply to comment on that And also, sometimes when I can't get it to work myself or when there's just so much to comment, Kylie and I have been doing this thing where she will write in blue and I will answer her in red. It's a bit daft maybe but works
  20. Where does he take them to, and what does he do with them, if he doesn't read books! Mysterious... That sounds fabulous! My idea of a really relaxing weekend... I'm so envious, I have to say But you really deserve it What seems to be the problem? I saw you quoted poppyshake's post just fine...? Are my posts different to quote? Edit: Ah, you only quoted poppyshake's whole post and then chesil's... hold on! With the new update, you have to click the first icon on top left, on the tool bar, it says BBCode. Then you will see [ quote this person and that and ladidaaa.] and then their post and [ /quote]. The quote thingies without the spaces. If you want to quote more than one thing on someone's post, you have to isolate those things by adding that [ quote by frankie ladidaa] and my waffle bit and then in the end add [ /quote]. And then you can comment on the thing between the [ quote ladidaa]and [ /quote]. And then you have to repeat that to all the things you want to quote.
  21. Cujo is one of my favorites from King, I hope you enjoy it And Trainspotting is excellent! Somewhat disturbing, from time to time, but a great read Can't wait to see which books you acquire later on this year, seeing as you have more room on your TBR than some others... Lucky you! I hope you have a great reading year 2014!
  22. Why would she give Steve more time to sleep?? What a wicked girl... I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. You have to let me know how it went. It would be super odd if she went back to her earlier regime now that you are back. I'm sure she will. And she'll tell Obi all about it and Obi will be all like, I could do that, too, but I'm just not that bothered... I like playing ball more. And Dylan will be happy that you have exhausted the little one... Ah, the translation... My copy is in Finnish so it'll be interesting to see if it's any better. Oh crap. I've just remembered that I have read one book by her before, the Zorro book, and the translation was just horrid. Not only was it not flowing, but there were so many typos and grammatical errors! What are the chances that the same authors English and Finnish translations suck! I know!! I just hope it doesn't last... *fingers crossed* You did!
  23. I've just googled The Underdog and realised it's the first book in the Wolfe brothers series. I've read the third book in that series, when I didn't know it was a series at all. Good job, going it in the wrong order...
