Oh crap I saw a copy of the book at a bookshop today. Didn't buy it, but I did eye it! Only 60 pages to finish The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan.
-
I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the book! We already have a topic on the subject, you can find it here. I know other people have read the book, too, but they've not commented on the thread so far.

Oh yes, there was another name next to Jenny Colgan's with this one on Goodreads, and I wondered if she co-wrote it with someone, but I now stand corrected! That would be great if you read it next! I will be eagerly waiting for your thoughts on it I hope it's good!

Michael Nyqvist, the great Swedish actor, died of lung cancer two days ago He was my favorite Swedish actor. So talented and so handsome. He was friends with a certain Finnish movie director, and the movie director's said Nyqvist is (was) such a nice, down-to-earth guy, who liked to come to Finland to meet his friends (his wife is Finnish Swedish, so she's from here). He was only 56 years old

Chesilbeach, have you read Class by Jenny Colgan? I really like the sound of it, but unfortunately they don't have copies of it at the library. I wonder if I should suggest they get a copy or if I should just buy one myself. Unless it's not a good one. I think it's a series..?

I have been thinking about my TBR a lot lately, and I've come to the conclusion that I seriously ought not to borrow any books from the library. I have so many wonderful books to get to on my bookshelves!! I know I've said the same thing before, and I failed to stick to my decision, but I'm trying once again. So, (after reserving a copy of a Jenny Colgan book I have my sights on! - edit: they don't have a copy of that book! I'm annoyed, but I guess this is better for my TBR), I will try and not make any more reservations of books, and I won't borrow random books from the library (unless I hear about a favorite author coming out with a new book that I simply must read!) I'm only allowed to read the ones that I've already borrowed, and the ones I've already reserved. Here is the list: Borrowed books (2/16) - The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan 4/5 - My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella 4/5 - Sopivasti sekaisin by Veera Vaahtera - Ajan kanssa: kesäni Marcel Proustin seurassa by Petteri Kantola - Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanism, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh - Irti sosiaalisesta jännittämisestä by a bunch of people - God Delusion by Richard Dawkins - Talking as Fast as I Can: from Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between) by Lauren Graham - Furiously Happy: a Funny Book about Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson - The Dandelion Years by Erica James - Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness: a self-help guide using cognitive behavioural techniques by Gillian Butler - The Flying Troutmans by Miriam Toews - The Real Liddy James by Anne-Marie Casey - Vapaaksi ahdistuksesta by Edmund J. Bourne - Hengitys itsesäätelyn ja vuorovaikutuksen tukena by a bunch of people - Parting Shot by Linwood Barclay Reserved books (9) - Daddy Cool: kolme vuosikymmentä televisiomaailman huipulla by Jorma Sairanen & Kalle Kinnunen - Tällä tavalla maailma loppuu by Philip Teir - Kuka murhasi Roland Barthesin? by Laurent Binet - Columbine by Dave Cullen - Tummiin vesiin by Paula Hawkins - Tunne lukkosi: vapaudu tunteiden vallasta by Kimmo Takanen - Synkän metsän siimeksessä by Ruth Ware - Luolamies by Jorn Lier Horst - Dead Writers in Rehab by Paul Bassett Davies

There's a sale at the big bookshop in the city, started a few weeks ago but I only went in this Monday. There was a very small selection of English titles They've had more before! (Or maybe I was too late) I almost didn't notice them. Took a look at the titles and only fancied one, but didn't buy it! It was Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Foer. Today I went back because it was haunting me And then there were books that hadn't been there before, and I liked the sound of one of them, and so I bought it, too It's called The Portable Veblen by Elizabeth Mckenzie. I thought I was allowed to splurge a little, as I got my paycheck including holiday money a few weeks ago.

The Bookshop on the Corner is also titled The Little Shop of Happy Ever After, if that helps in any way! I didn't realize about the two different titles before I was half way through the book. I hope you find it! I have 60 pages to go, but I'm really enjoying it

^ I'm currently reading The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan (originally titled The Little Shop of Happy-Ever-After) and I'm really enjoying it! Today I got my reservation of Kinsella's My Not So Perfect Life, and I'm excited to get to it soon! I had forgotten what it was about, exactly, but like what I (re)read in the blurb.
-
Thanks Athena! I've started reading The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan. Only 24 pages in so it's early days.

The Switch. It was quite alright.

Please be kind and don't tell them!!!!!

The Helsinki Pride week started today over here, and it made me think of this genre. (Hence the avatar) A new book to add to the list would be What Belongs to You by Garth Greenwell. I've not read it (yet), but it's supposed to be good. I've also read a fictionalized account of Patricia Highsmith, called The Crime Writer and it's by Jill Dawson, which I shall add to the list. It's been a really long time since we've done most of the adding to the list, so I'd welcome anyone who has new titles for the list to post on the thread!

Exactly! A quick look at Goodreads statistics say, that Under a Pole Star has been rated 0.02 stars better than The Tenderness of Wolves! Of course, there are only 233 people who've rated the book (as opposed to the 8985 people who've rated TToW). The book has 608 pages Good luck! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you

Ack, that's a shame about TIO I'm grasping at straws, but maybe she didn't do as fine a job because she was out of her own element - writing about things taking place in a cold climate? Maybe she can only write amazing fiction when it's set in a cold climate. That would mean UaPS has a really fair chance of being a great read!

That's so funny, what a coincidence I have very fond memories of that particular reading circle, as I think all the participants really enjoyed the book. That's rather rare. Have you read The Invisible Ones? I borrowed a copy many moons ago, but never started it before taking it back to the library. I feared it wouldn't be up to par with TToW. Great to hear your library has copies of the novel! Saves you some money I read the blurb of UaPS, and I have to say, it's not as interesting as TToW. But maybe it's a case of the blurb not revealing all that much, and the actual storyline being one helluva ride. Penney, as we know, is very skilled in setting the mood and creating a very believable atmosphere!

They are really yummy, I must say! Although the bacon... Never heard or seen anyone do it. Blasphemy!!!
-
Nice! Animal. I've googled, what it entails exactly, and it's seasoned ground pork and beef in a particular shape. You put it in the oven or fry on a pan. A classic from when I was a kid. (Notice the word 'original' in the picture.... so much English we use in Finnish.)
-
Maybe it was, yes It's been so long since we had RC! Makes one rather nostalgic. Just the other day I was thinking about Stef Penney's The Tenderness of Wolves, and how I can still remember it's atmosphere. Just because it was an RC book and we talked about it for a month on here. Good times 'Not a long book' is always a plus! At least in terms of picking up said book to read it!

Great review, bobbly! I remember when people on here read O'Farrell's books and this title was on the radar (it may even have been a contender for a reading circle book at one point), and I was curiuos, but then somehow decided this book was not for me. Reading your review, I wonder what made me think it would not be for me! I'm adding this to my wishlist. Thanks!

It almost sounds like you're in Finland, celebrating Midsummer Grilled sausages for the win! I had french fries and something called 'grill paws', which I don't know what it might be in English, as I'm not fully aware what it contains in Finnish, either

No need to be sorry! The signature's a bit cryptic, and I at least don't pay much attention to people's signatures. I mean, they don't catch my eye, even though there might be fun ones around. And you're quite right about what you said one read book sprouting five new ones! Sorry, my bad! I was too quick to read your message, because I got excited for you and was eager to write down my response Liking your tweet is just as golden as re-tweeting it! (Well, not 100%, but very close!!)
-
Mine's in the signature, so I can't escape the horrid number... 353 at the moment! (The number before that being my TBR number at the beginning of the year. Yikes!) I think maybe it's safest not to count.... Ignorance is bliss! Ah, I didn't know they were here. Yes, you got Nummirock right! I've never been to Nummirock, as it's on the other side of Finland. Simone re-tweeted your tweet AGAIN? I'm seeing backstage passes in your future.... *clairvoyant moment*
