As a kid the Enchanted wood trilogy by Enid Blyton recently Harry Potter. Also David Eddings books

I first found Herbert when I read "The Fog" and read all his books but since 48 a chase novel his others after that have been very hard work. why has he changed his style of writing? is it just me or has he decided his readers need more fantasy?

IT by Stephen King was a good one also any Henry James ghost stories too

I found some of his novels samey I am not a great fan of his chase novels so have given him a rest. Watchers was my first of his which I really enjoyed

[What am I going to do with my books?]

rarely I swap mine at the markets second hand book stall but when I die the village library will have them I have some very rare and expensive Tolkien

There are approximately 80 next to the bed - I gave up counting the other smaller piles around the house.

Ha I know what you mean I am a bit of a spreader a batchelors perogative. shelves full of magazines about thirty years of readers digest and loads of novels my home is a bit of a library in a mess

[Why do we read so much?]

Due to my illness and insomnia by best time is during the long nights with rain drummimg on the window, my favourite season is winter with a good Henry James ghost story. I do not have a bath but when I go into the oxygen capsule I read then. showers makes the books too wet to read

No time for goodbyes did and so did Mr Pip I wondered what had moved other readers to tears

[Why do we read so much?]

The best present my mum got me was a library membership. then I met this wonderful librarian who let me chose books from the adult library. they both helped me learn to read better and chose for me some great books, The librarian introduced me to both Shakespere and Dickens and I enjoy both today. my nephew is like me and is an eclectic reader like me.

Any Tabitha King. much to violent and much too violent sex etc not my type of book at all

[Lending or borrowing books.]

I used to lend books but they came back in such a state I would never do it again. I love my books and some have sentimental values such as what I was reading when diagnosed with MS etc

[Why do we read so much?]

I agree I turned my skills around and have written short stories but mainly write factual natural history articles and will read anything I always keep a readers digest with me if caught in a queue etc.

 

I must have a pint of milk and a big choccy bar with me too and prefer to read in bed but my belly plays up with this mixture of food and drink but reading takes some of the pain away

[Why do we read so much?]

I began reading cos I was good at it and no good at any other subjects in school. I would read to the other children in my class and help those as I do now to read. Then I became a victim of school bullies cos I spent all my time in the school library reading anything from encyclopedias to Shakespeare to Dr Who. I found books was a solitary pursuit I could take any where when I was a child. In adult hood I read to escape and because of my MS and IBs I often spend a lot of time resting so read alot now.

 

Some folks say that reading is a waste of time but I learn from newspapers and the Readers digest magazines and enjoy escaping to another world

several hundred. I collect the fantasy and sci fi for the book art and reading of course. I keep all that I have read and collect all the authors books. I am abit of a bibliophile boot sales and charity shops are my best friends.

[Visualising scenes when you read]

Ok I am a bloke but read ladies war fiction my mum buys me. I often make models of the scenes described with model soldiers re made into civilian figures. I have also built fantasy models too. that is why I enjoy books as they do escape me away from my depression and IBS and MS the more descriptive the more i get lost.

[Have you read a book more than once?]

I am afraid I do not as there is so much out there to read I cannot justify the time spent re reading a book. I did re read Rats once cos I had nothing else to hand when I was bed ridden but that was the only time i did so. Although I do keep all the books after I have read them. God knows why!

[Hello from a newbie]

Hello just googled this site. I have always been a big reader, when I was little I had an advanced reading age but the teachers would not let me read the "Hard" book. I was lucky that the village librarian was sympathetic and she let me choose from the adult books. she even chose books for me and I read all the classics. I am now a freelance nature writer! I suffer IBS so spend a lot of time resting I am now reading Fantasy but love all books and subjects.
