It is a real shame, as the service you get from independents is so much better. Darn this credit crunch.
-
We only have two places to buy books where I live, one is WHSmiths and the other is an independent. The Independent is closing down I discovered today. It was awful, they were selling off all their stock and 3/4 of the shelves were empty. I was nearly in tears.
I'm not sure why, but I never buy books from WHSmith, I find it a rather off putting shop to browse books in.
I do hope the credit crunch doesn't claim too many independent shops, books or otherwise. :-(

This is so interesting! It made me think about the effect reading has on me. The act of geting my book and settling down and opening it up is very calming for me, and I wondered if others felt the same. It's almost ritualistic. My Hubby says it's like my version of the Tea Ceremony. The act of preparing to read is as important as the act of reading itself.
Perhaps I am just odd...

8. No book must EVER be thrown out. If it is no longer needed, a new home must be found for it either by selling, swapping or donating it to charity.
Quite right

I hate those stickers too.
Nellie's Household Tip Of The Day #1:
If you get a nasty sticky residue on the cover a little squirt of a cleaner like Mr Sheen and a gentle polish with a duster will get rid of it easily.

I try to never crease or bend the spine of a book or turn over corner of page.
I never lay a book face down open.
Me too!
Also:
I never put books on the floor (no idea why)
I don't like to be watched while I am reading, I don't mind if others are reading around me, but if I catch someone watching me on a train for example, I get quite uncomfortable.

I love seeing these pictures! Is it just me, or are other people looking at these photos and saying "ooh, I have that book, and that one, I'd like to read that one...."
LOL

We were really pleased with them. They were an IKEA bargain too, so didn't break the bank.

This was taken a while back and now all the space on the shelves is full...

Lord of the Rings - generic quest filled out to 3 insanely long volumes with a tonne of insufferable poetry and utter pointlessness
I'm no expert, but I thought that Lord of the Rings was held up as the first of the genere, so couldn't be generic. I have to admit I haven't read it, it's on my list for this year, so am not in a position to comment on whether it is overrated.

My name is Nellie, and I make lists.
-
Janet's probably busy making a list
Perhaps we should start a "List Makers Anon" thread!
-
We have this. I'll PM Michele or a mod and ask if we can add it.
-
Do we have a "useful book related links" thread? I'd hate to loose this link and it could be handy for those trying to make lists for their challenges.

I'm just having a good rumage through and it seems to be good, it's run by two librarians, so a good selection.
They also have a "solar system" section... I feel a new challenge coming on... read your way around the galaxy!
They also have an oceans section, perhaps you could read your way around the world, crossing the oceans as you go

I was interested in the UK Counties reading challenge, and quick google found this site:
Bibliotravel. I haven't looked through many of the places to see what the quality of the books is like though.
Still it's a list, and I do like a list.

oh! I wasn't critisising you because you liked it! I know we all like different things I just got bored with it. Clearly, not for me!

I know I might be in the minority here, but I really didn't like Inkheart at all. I thought the idea was amazing, but I found it really dragged. The heros got caught by the baddies, escaped, got caught, escaped, got caught... you get the idea.
Such a shame, as I said the idea is outstanding.

I had the same problem at Uni in my halls of residence. There were no bookshelves in the rooms! We were supposed to study and read books, but had nowhere to store them. I thought that was a bit of an oversight.

Michelle - Perhaps there is an opportunity here to split the Non-fiction forum into sections? I really like to read books about science, and always looking for recommendations, but they are a little hard to find as all non-fiction books are together, unlike the different genres for fiction. Would this be possible?
I'm not suggesting you go back and sort all previous posts, just from now onwards.
Just a thought.

I love my Sony E-reader, and have lots of lovely books for it.

WIth you there on The Davinci Code...

It took all my willpower not to read the last chapter in The Deathly Hallows!

These sound like great books. Any suggestions as to which to start with?
TWILIGHT Saga by Stephenie Meyer
in Children's / Young Adult
Posted
I finished Twilight last night, and I have to say I was rather disappointed. I nearly gave up in the middle, but carried on as so many people raved about it on here, so I hoped it would get better. I didn't think the characters were terribly well written, rather flat and stereotypical. I thought the plot was obvious, and the emotion poorly written. The only part that slightly intrigued me was:
the part about how Alice became a vampire
I am now wondering whether to plough on with the rest of the series or not. Is Twlight the best of the bunch? Do we learn anymore about Alice?
*ducks to avoid flying objects hurled by Twilight fans*
