  1. Hi niranjan! welcome to the forum =) I'm pretty new too!
  2. I'm pretty new too, welcome to the forum! =)
  3. thanks everyone, for such a warm welcome =) K.B Marsh, in reply to your question...next year I will be continuing with art and English (it was a 2 year course) and then I'll be off to art university (hopefully). I'd like to study B A hons in creative writing and fine art =) and after that..well, who knows? hopefully I'll be published by that time =) and be in a job I enjoy (rather than the one I'm in at the moment!) x
  4. I wanted to talk to other people who were as interested in books as I was. It's hard to find people who love things such as literature around here, especially at my age...you'd think it would be easy whilst studying English in college, but sadly, the majority of the people in my class hated reading (I didn't understand why they would be taking English!) so I searched on google for a book group, and I found this one =) and I'm very glad I did too!
  5. no lunch for me today...i had a bigger breakfast than usual so I'm sorted until tea time =)
  6. we're having a BBQ tonight, for my mums birthday...strictly veggie though =)
  7. The book i most value (and would probably cry if it got ruined or lost) is my Brian Froud 'Lady Cottingtons pressed fairy letters'. It's more of an 'arty' book to be honest, but i love it so much and it's so interesting. I love all the Brian Froud books I have, but this is by far my favourite.
  8. my facts: 1 I'm happy and proud to be a vegetarian (for 7 years now) 2 I love art and would like to sell my work and have it in a gallery in the future 3 I have alot of mood swings-1 minute I can be the happiest person alive, the next, I'm depressed 4 English and art are my strongest subjects at college 5 I work around 26 hours a week and hate it! i want to change my jobs!
  9. K.B Marsh, i understand what you mean! I loved enduring love, but there were certain bits I found very slow...mainly closer to the end though! maybe in the future you'll give it another try? who knows, maybe one day you'll get on with it! =) --- thanks for the welcome Kylie =) yes, i think Harry Potter does appeal to an extremely broad age group, and i suppose that's the beauty of it...everyone can enjoy it =)
  10. that's great =) it's hard to find many people who appreciate classical music...especially when you're my age. Younger people always seem to view it as 'sad' but alot of it has heaps more talent and meaning than rap, pop etc
  11. usually I flick through the book, reading small sections and if it doesn't appeal to me straight away, i find i lose interest. The book I'm reading at the moment is like that (warlock by Wilbur Smith). I want to get stuck into it, but i just can't seem to.
  12. Hi! I joined yesterday and so far am having a great time posting my opinions and replying to posts =) You seem like a lovely bunch =p so, here's the basics of me: My name is Hannah and I've just finished college. I was studying joint English literature & language and art & design. Reading/writing and generally all things creative have always been something I've enjoyed and been interested in. I'm currently writing a fantasy book, which will hopefully take me places...I'm adding to it bit by bit each day. I'm also a very spiritual person and have unique views of life (won't go in to too much detail right now) and I also love animals. I've been a vegetarian for around 7 years now. well, that's the basics. Hopefully talk to alot more of you soon
  13. I popped in to waterstones the other day and was completely gutted I hadn't been given my wages yet because there was so many books i wanted! They sometimes have small displays out focusing on one writer, and there was one on a male writer (apologies for forgetting the name!) but there were a few books he said had inspired him, and 2 i really thought looked good! Both were poetry books and after having a flick through i desperately wanted them! There were also some other random ones...i really need to start remembering titles! but one was quite morbid, and the other (which I'm sure you've all heard of) was 'I am legend'. They made the film of it not long ago. I had never seen the book until then...I'm assuming it made an appearance due to the film. I'm lethal in book shops. I go in with the intention of simply browsing and end up spending
  14. My brother used to work at a games workshop and he had a load of these books from there! He likes them and I've been meaning to pick one up, but don't seem to ever get round to it!
  15. I'd really like to share my favourite books with everyone...if you've read them, or are going to read them, let me know what you think! 1.The Blair Witch Files series- ok, I know this may sound quite cheesy, but I'm obsessed with books which have a slightly eery feel, so these hit the spot perfectly! they're short reads, so they're good if you want something light, but they may be hard to come across since they have apparently gone out of print. I managed to pick a few up in my local library a few years back, but when i attempted to order the missing ones, she told me they no longer had them and they had gone out of print. So, I've been upset since. If creepy, mysterious books are your thing, then get hunting for this series! It's really easy-going, so a nice easy read, just perfect for in-between 'big' books. 2. Enduring love by Ian McEwan-I had to study this book for English Literature in college and completely loved it! I admit that the occasional chapter (mainly nearer the end) dragged slightly, but despite this, I found it a really interesting read. It would be well worth the money (or trip to the library). Although the book is very well written, the film simply didn't do it justice! In an attempt to be quite 'art-house' they pretty much butchered it. The plot was slightly altered too and to be honest, it was a waste of time. If you like more 'real-life' based books you're likely to like this one. Although some of the events (particularly the major one) are quite un-realistic, the general attitude and presentation of the characters is very well done and very realistic. Ok, I'm going to feel very sad saying this, but i simply have to give J K Rowling a mention. There's been alot of things said by people (particularly teenagers!) about how the Harry Potter books are 'nerdy' and 'stupid' but, to me, they're feel good books. Think 'comfort food' of the literature realm. They may lack some sophistication, but I have to say, I love her style of writing. Whenever I feel a little fed up with the books on offer these days, or I just need something to cheer me up, I head straight for 'Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix'. I also love the authors background story too. To go from having nothing to becoming the person who produced a best-seller is an immense achievement. I say 'Well done Mrs Rowling!'
  16. I love Enduring love. We had to study it for English Literature in college and whilst all my class mates hated it I adored it! He has a website I think...I came across it when I was researching him if i remember rightly. How did you find the chapters nearer to the end though? I thought the part where he obtained the gun went on slightly...but maybe that's because i was impatient to find out what would happen in the end =p
  17. ok, at first i read this as 'top 5 you would recommend, but then realised it was would not. so, here is my list: 1. Through a glass darkly-It began ok...actually, I almost started to enjoy it, but it soon turned into one of those books which are unnecissarily repetative and to be honest, quite depressing. Last I heard about it was a few years back when someone mentioned that they were considering turning it into a film or something 2. Looking up at the sun-The blurb on the back seemed good, and it even began well, but soon became the most depressing book I have ever read. What I thought would be something resembling a girl coming to terms with her sexuality and taking us along her journey actually turned into something so ridiculous that I actually despised the book by the end. 3. LOTR (Lord Of The Rings)-I'm so sorry to mention this one since I know people are going to bite my head off, but I just didn't manage to get along with it. Tolkein is clearly perfectly capable of writing, and is good at what he does, but I just found it hard to get in to and to be honest, quite boring. I like the general idea of it (the whole fantasy theme) but, like I said, it wasn't my cup of tea. 4. Artemis Fowl-I know this book was aimed more at younger readers, but it was years ago when i attempted to read this, so please let me off =p It was just one of them books I didn't get along with...I'm sure you know the type...the ones which you want to get along with and want to read, but you just can't get into them. The graphology was all well and good, but the contents didn't match the 'glamour' of the glittery cover. 5. The 'wicca' series by Cate Tiernan-Ok, I feel awful saying this since my close friend and my fiancee rave about them all the time, but i tried to read them once around 4 years ago and never got on with them. I tried several times but despite the Ok blurb on the back, the contents was a car crash. I thought i would never see them again, yet the other week my friend surprised us by revealing he had borrowed them yet again from the library. They've been knocking around the local libraries since I was in school...it's time they vanished for good!
