  1. We read "The Handmaid's Tale" in high school, which gave birth to one of the most memorable quotes by our English teacher. (non-PG language, thus the spoilers)

"It's hard to talk about hanky-panky when they're screwing in front of his wife!"

He was one of a kind... We're convinced he hasn't had his teachers license since the 70's. We adored him!

Seriously though, THT is one of those books where you have to read everything, as it twists and turns all the way through, and even after you've finished. I really should reread it! Let me know when you read it so I can join you.

Am going to start reading it this evening.Really looking forward to reading it. Its one of those books I've wanted to read but never got round to it.

  2. Mario and Lisa to go after that sick making display tonight, get the vomit bucket out :)

Totally agree, that was absolutely revolting to watch! They are both useless anyway. Mario wants everything done his way and is arrogant and every time I see that Lisa she is sitting in bed applying make up!

  3. I loved the book and found it quite sad as many women in the past will have sadly been institutionalised by their families for no reason. I sympathised and felt for the character of Esme. My only criticisms were that the ending seemed quite rushed and I did not understand the need for the sub plot involving Iris, Alex and Luke. I felt that more time could have been devoted to the character of Esme instead. I would give it an 8 out of 10.

  4. Before our two year old was born we bought him these.

Because of the stark black and white images they really attracted his attention right from birth and he used to love looking at them in the first few months. We also got him one like the ones below but that unfolded and we used to put it around his moses basket for him to look at.

  5. 1. Richard Dawkins: The God Delusion

    2. Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner

    3. Karen Joy Fowler: The Jane Austin Book Club

    4. Maeve Binchy: Star Sulliven

    5. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Half of a Yellow Sun

I wouldn't recommend any of these books

I've read two of Binchys books and just don't like her writing at all.

  6. 1. Who is your all-time favourite author, and why? I really could not narrow it down to just one, have loads of authors that I love.

    2. Who was your first favourite author, and why? Do you still consider him or her among your favourites? I used to love Roald Dahls books when I was younger and Jill Murphy was also a big favourite as I absolutely loved The Worst Witch books!

    3. Who

  7. I tend to get rid of my books at a second hand bookshop I visit in Alnwick, they don't give you money for them but you have an account with them and they give you credit to get more books. They give you a reasonable amount for each book plus the actual bookshop is a converted railway station so there is a massive selection of books there.

  8. Mario is awful, he is extremely arrogant and full of himself. The way him and Lisa are constantly all over each other makes me feel sickly!

Alex is soo two faced, and her nice act at the moment is just unplausible.

  9. It's not often I give up on a book , I tend to see them through to the end even if I'm not that keen. The three I have given up on are in the past couple of years are:

    A Suitable Boy- Vikram Seth

    The Time Travellers Wife

    War and Peace - Tolstoy

The think the size put me off with a couple of them and I just wasn't keen on the Time Travellers Wife. Would like to read war and Peace all the way through and will definitely try to tackle it someday!
