My favourite Elmore Leonard is Mr. Paradise (but I've only read a few). The Hot Kid & sequel Up in Honey's Room are good. My favourite Harlan Coben is No Second Chance, followed closely by The Innocent. Don't give up on Margaret Atwood - try The Robber Bride. You couldn't not like that. And also, All the Pretty Horse by Cormac McCarthy is excellent.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

It's her only work to date & it p'd off Truman Capote as it was so good. Dill is generally thought to be modeled on Capote who was a childhood friend of Harper Lee's. Altogether a work of genius. It's standard GCSE text now. I recently listened to Sissy Spacek's reading of it. Simply amazing. People may or may not know that Harper Lee was with Capote when he did the research for In Cold Blood. Another work of genius in my opinion. And I believe the creation of a genre. -
Not in my case. I thought it was OK.

Where is your favourite reading place?

Bed..... But, we have a good-size kitchen/diner & our plan is to turn the dining room into a library of sorts. So when that's done, that will be my favourite place to read. -

The Ministry of Special Cases was truly excellent. It wasn't dissimilar to A Thousand Splendid Suns in that it looked at the impact upon ordinary people of loathsome regimes. If people don't know, it's about the quest of parents to find their son who's become one of the disappeared in Argentina's Dirty War. Highly recommended. I've got through a few more books besides, a Simon Brett, a Pratchett and a good few others. I've just started listening to Traveler by Ron McLarty. I'd link to the title on my website but I reckon Michelle would slap my wrist. But I listened to Memory of Running by McLarty a couple of years ago & that one's stuck with me. A great read if you missed it. -
Catch 22 has some outstanding moments: This time Milo had gone too far. Bombing his own men and planes was more than even the most phlegmatic observer could stomach, and it looked like the end for him...Milo was all washed up until he opened his books to the public and disclosed the tremendous profit he had made. Sheer brilliance. But overall, I preferred Gold.

Via Google. I've all but given up on mine.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke

I'm about midway through this. It's been sat on my shelf in shrinkwrap since it was launched/hyped. I'm enjoying it. I wasn't absolutely certain I would, but it's good. -
Gawd, James Patterson churns out two a week. A nightmare for a bookseller, because by the time you get a title in, the next one's out.

I think I have run out of authors...nightmare!!!

Catch 22's good, but Gold is funnier & an easier read. -
Anything by Danielle Steele.

It's a few months since I read this, but I'll bet the "spoiler" which was really interpretation will split the sexes. I enjoyed On Chesil Beach. I thought it was very clever.

I've got a few. The last one was Making Money. I normally buy two & flog one on Amazon or eBay to subsidise or sometimes even pay for mine. My second Making Money copy got

I've seen it a few times. I quite like it. It makes a nice change for Mel Gibson to be in a non anti-English film.

S'pose not, but it wasn't really a blog as I've lost track. It was more a "hello again" as I'd not really been able to post for quite some time. Apology accepted. -

... and Happy New Year. November & December were extremely busy for me with work, but I managed to get a little reading in! I read the "last" Rebus, which was among his best. I managed two Pratchett's - Going Postal & Making Money. The latest Peter Robinson. A couple of Sandford's (one on audio). I'm currently reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell which has been on my shelf in shrinkwrap since it was launched. I also listened to To Kill a Mockingbird read by Sissy Spacek, which was quite possibly the best audio book ever! Too good for the 16 year olds studying it for GCSE. I also managed to listen to A Thousand Splendid Suns. Again, quite brilliant. Both unabridged of course. I'm currently listening to The Ministry of Special Cases by Nathan Englander. I've missed a few out, which was why I was determined (but failed) to keep my book blog going. -
I read All the Pretty Horses recently. I thought it wasgreat. I've got the third in the trilogy, but obviously I won't read it until I've tracked down a copy of the second one. I did put something about it in my reading blog. Some of the horsey stuff went over my head though.

It's very good isn't it? I ended up liking him. It's unusual crime fiction in that it's from the "villain's" perspective. -
The Lancashire Hotpot that's in the oven. The cooking aroma is driving me mad. Just 2 hours to go!

I've been quiet of late, but I've been reading: In print I've read the second in the Ripley series, Richard North Patterson's Final Judgment & the last Rebus, Exit Music. A superb last (allegedly) Rebus. On audio I've listened to Up in Honey's Room by Elmore Leonard & Philip Margolin's Proof Positive. I'm currently reading Old World New World by Kathleen Burk. It's a history of the relationship of Britain & America. I rarely read non-fiction, but I bought this one because it's written by one of my regular customers. -

Framley Parsonage is the best book I've read so far this year. It's full of politics, religion and lurve. Quite simply I can't recommend it enough. -

And very good it was too. They're such immoral stories.... how can your sympathies be with a lying, cheating murderer? Unlike the Krays, he doesn't even love his mum! Well, guardian as was. I've started Framley Parsonage. I think it was the first book I ever bought from eBay. It's an old hardback, which I guess is about right. I've not read much Trollope other than the Barchester series & The Eustace Diamonds. I was going to read the new Pratchett, but it seems like I might be better to get hold of a copy of Going Postal to read first.
