  1. I would never write in a book that didn't belong to me! In fact, I don't think I've ever written in any of own books. I don't see much point in correcting something like that. If I know something is wrong, I know it's wrong; I don't need to deface the book to make my point.
  2. It's on my tbr...I want to get around to it soon. I'm not put off my less than a hundred pages - it's all about quality, not quantity. Breakfast at Tiffany's is less than a hundred pages, and it's a fab book. Some of Annie Proulx's short stories are fab too, and they are all less than a hundred pages (some less than ten). Sometimes it's quite nice to pick up a book and know that it's going to be a short read.
  3. A friend who knows I love reading, and knows I love my dog, bought me a bookmark as a thank you gift. It's metal with a slogan which says 'Those who love me love my dog'. I use that:)
  4. I don't really like small font, although I will read books with it, if necessary (and to be honest, I do find that my eyes get used to it after a few pages). I don't like a lack of paragraphs either - that's one of the reasons why I keep putting of reading 'Blindness' by Jose Saramago. There are virtually no paragraphs in it!!
  5. Hello Genevieve, and thank you for your lovely message. I was speaking from experience - not my own personal experience, but from knowing people who went to prison and were able to make a better life for themselves when they came out.

I loved your post - so intelligent and thoughtful, and I very much look forward to reading more posts of yours.

Thank you again for such a lovely message. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

  6. Just finished The Summer of Katya, by Trevanian. I enjoyed it up until the ending, which felt like a bit of a let down. About to start Three Bags Full, by Leonie Swann.
  7. I knew about the last chapter being left out of the US version, but I didn't realise that Stanley Kubrick had made the film according to the version with the omitted chapter - you have raised my interest, and I might have to look out for this film while I am shopping tomorrow!
  8. No. I started to watch it years ago, but it was an old pirate video () because it was before it was made available again. The quality was so bad that I gave up on it. I wouldn't mind seeing it though - is it pretty faithful to the book?
  9. Finished A Clockwork Orange - fab, fab, fab. If there is one book I wish everybody could read, this would be it. Just about to start The Summer of Katya, by Trevanian.
  10. Well, I have just finished Iris and Ruby, by Rosie Thomas, and thought it was fantastic (rated it 5 out of 5). Particularly loved how vividly Cairo was brought to life. About to start A Clockwork Orange, by Anthony Burgess. I have read it before, but not for about 20 years, so I think it is due a re-read!
  11. I just finished Morality for Beautiful Girls, which is the third book in the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. I really enjoy these books, and this one was no disappointment. Now reading Iris and Ruby, by Rosie Thomas.
  12. I predict a Yasmina/Kate final, with Yasmina hopefully winning. There are no spoilers here - I have no idea what will happen...this is just my hunch. Mind you, having a relationship with a fellow candidate will not have endeared Kate to Sir Alan.
  13. If I'm about to read a book, I always look to see how many pages the book has, and then work out how many I need to read per day to get through it in 5 days (which is how much I usually give myself per book, unless it's a particularly long one).
  14. You know, I didn't spot that:smile2: But I can definitely see the comparison...I really liked it. I have just finished Chocolat, by Joanne Harris, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I really want to read the sequel now! Having now found my copy of Morality for Beautiful Girls, by Alexander McCall Smith, I am going to start reading this next!
  15. Just finished Un Lun Dun, by China Mieville. I really enjoyed it, although it took me a long while to read (not because it was a difficult read though - I had a run of a few very busy days). An enjoyable book, and one I would recommend if you want a good, fun read. Going to start Chocolat by Joanne Harris next, as I feel that I am the only person in the world who has not read this book!!
  16. I hope you enjoy it Nicola:) I know quite a few people who have read it, and I haven't heard a bad word about it yet! I've just finished Ferney, by James Long, which was not bad but ultimately left me feeling underwhelmed. About to start Un Lun Dun, by China Mieveille.
  17. Have just finished Windows on the World, by Frederic Beigbeder. Uncomfortable reading, which is not surprising given the subject matter (September 11th 2001). About to start Ferney, by James Long.
  18. I think they are really lovely books. The only thing is that they can get a bit 'samey' so I always leave a long gap between each book in the series. (Actually, I couldn't find my copy of Morality for Beautiful Girls - although I know it is in the house somewhere - so I ended up reading Windows on the World, by Frederic Beigbeder instead).
  19. I've just finished Death at Dawn, by Caro Peacock, and it was a great read - perfect for a bit of escapism. About to start Morality for Beautiful Girls, by Alexander McCall Smith (third in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series).
  20. Wow!! Just finished The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood - fabulous book! Very disturbing and chilling though (I felt relief that this was not my life I was reading about). About to start Death At Dawn, by Caro Peacock - wanted something light and easy to read next.
  21. "A bookstore is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking." - Jerry Seinfeld. "A room without books is like a body without a soul." - Cicero. John Waters also had a wonderful quote about books, but it includes a naughty word, so I won't repeat it here!
  22. Finished Mother's Milk, by Edward St. Aubyn. Started off well, but I was glad to finish it! About to start The Handmaid's Tale.
  23. Just finished A Partisan's Daughter, by Louis de Bernieres. Quite good, but I'm glad it wasn't any longer than it is, as I think I might have lost interest if it had have been.
  24. Maj - the Asian guy with the huge beard. I was quite surprised. He came over very well on You're Fired!
  25. I was so hoping that Ben would go - that guy is so in love with himself, if he was chocolate he would eat himself! I don't know if any of you watched the 'You're Fired!' show afterwards, but it showed an extended version of his little speech when he had said that he should model the product because he was the best looking one on the team. After that, he went on to slag off all the other team members, saying how out of shape and unattractive they were (except for Kate, who I think he fancied). Even though James is really annoying in the boardroom, I think he is better out of that room - perhaps nerves get the better of him when he's in front of Sir Alan? I really don't like Debra though - she looks like she could kill you with one stare! I don't think she was a particularly good team leader either, but their product was by far the better one. Phil is growing on me - he did well in last night's task, and also stuck up for Lorraine in the boardroom.
