    hi!

    Becca!
  2. Welcome to the forum Nicola!
  3. I've heard reports that a large number of people will be turning to the last page as soon as they buy it - it almost causes me physical pain to think about! I agree that the HP books aren't significantly better than other books of the same type, but the publicity machine really got it right.
  4. Like Fiona, the only thing I've ever read that genuinely shocked and disturbed me was the execution scene from The Green Mile. This was because it was so brilliantly written and unexpectedly gory. Nothing in the story up to that point really prepared me for such a vivid description.

    Hi All

    Welcome to the forum Cath!
  6. I have to finish a book once I've started. Even if I'm halfway through and it's painfully bad, I fear if I give up, I might be missing the best part!

    Hello

    :welcomeboard:Welcome elbereth & enjoy!
  8. Growing up, one of my favourite children's book was The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall. Has anybody else read it?
  9. The Talisman is the book that introduced me to Stephen King 20 years ago and it's still one of my favourites.

    Welcome to the forum Roger!
  11. Not only would I not take any of his shenanigans, I also wouldn't be having any of his jiggery pokery!

    Hi, I'm Jean

Greetings Jean, and welcome to the forum!
  13. I'm a long way from you down here in Cornwall Victoria, but if you can hear me - welcome to the forum!
  14. I usually just read what sounds best in my head. Although, I often find out later that it's pronounced differently!
  15. No, it all has to be a surprise for me, and I'm very rarely disappointed!
  16. A belated to you Lee!
  17. I wouldn't normally have ventured into classics, but I recently decided to delve into the wife's bookshelves and read Wuthering Heights. I must say it was a lot more impressive than I was prepared for, so I've now moved onto The Mill On The Floss. Once you get into it, the style of writing is quite soothing and the characterization is brilliant!
  18. I voted Horror, Fantasy & Sci-Fi. And Animal (especially William Horwood's Duncton series).
  19. I've never read a bad book, but the only one that I struggled to get into was The Last Of The Mohicans.

    Hello!

Thanks for the welcome everybody! Wraith - I'm sure, one day that we and out fellow brothers will rise up and throw off the shackles of our female oppressors!!!!! Sorry, got to go, the wife wants to paint my toenails.
  21. Stephen King refers to his own book Insomnia in The Dark Tower series and at one point, one of the characters even meets the author and gives him the idea for writing The Dark Tower!
  22. I always read a chapter a day, no matter how long or short. If there are no discernable chapters, I tend to keep it to half an hour a time.
  23. I'm The Dark Tower Series - I think that's fair!
  24. I've seen Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption and was pleasantly surprised. Come to think of it, I've been quite impressed with a few film adaptations. The Green Mile was excellently done. Many people may disagree, but I was also impressed with Christine.
