I'm rewatching Breaking Bad. Up to the last episode of season 3.
-
Thanks Kylie
, I'm so glad it was useful to you
. Priority Rating does seem to be a better name, I might've translated too literally from Dutch
. My database still needs some work too, but I agree, it's fun to do! Good luck with yours
!
Ah, I thought your 'anticipation rating' was something like a number out of 10 depending on how much you predicted you were going to enjoy the book when you got around to reading it. Does that make sense?
Anyway.. sorry for rambling on! Thanks for telling me about your library
. I'd love to see an American and a British library some time in my life, I've seen one British library and really wish I could've spent more time there!
Wouldn't it be cool if there was a job that involved travelling around the world to visit different libraries (ooh, and bookshops)?
I wonder if I could convince someone to pay me to do that...hmm...

OK, Ben. I'll try and give it a go. I caught the trail (haha) end of a trailer on TV today and saw some ridiculous joke. I thought 'Geez, what's this rubbish?' Turned out to be a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.
So I'm even less uncertain about it, but I'll still give it a try.
I rewatched Gravity today. Great stuff. Not quite the same effect watching it on my TV compared to the cinema, but still wonderful.
I still can't get Interstellar out of my head. I'll be watching that many times once I get my hands on it.
-
I'd also like to read a few more books from my long-term challenge lists (Rory Gilmore, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die etc.). Happily, I already have so many of those books on my TBR pile, and so many of them are high up on my list of books that I want to read the most, that it'll be easy to knock a few over during the course of my normal reading.
-
I think I'd have to agree with you, Emelee, for my top 2 (although the order could change at any given moment!):
1. And Then There Were None
2. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
3. Murder on the Orient Express
The only other Christie I've read to date is the play The Mousetrap. My partner acted in it last year and I watched rehearsals, so I've watched/read it many times and really love it.
I have many more of Christie's books on my TBR pile. I think I'll try to read one every couple of months next year so I can make a dent in the pile.

Kylie and Athena,
I really do have to apologize for not spending more time here. I have pretty much dropped out of almost everything. My current excuse Is that I am in the finishing stages of a complete first draft for the Memoir that I have been writing over the past several years from time to time. This is my third start and now I am weaving together all three pieces, since I finally have an ending in mind and partly drafted. I'm using Scrivener, incidentally, and it really is a pleasure to use. Even if one still has to struggle to make the words come.
But I'll at least be back before the end of the year to complete the 2014 reading list with new reads during December.
Glad to hear from you both
Enjoy the Holidays!.
PS: Pontalba hounds me from time to time, and I'll try to do better.
Aw, there's no need to apologise and offer excuses! Sorry if I made you feel bad. I just wanted to let you know that we love having you here and we welcome any time that you can spare.
All the best with your memoir!

Karsa, you are so mean!

Ooh, nice! It's definitely good not having to get up to turn off the light when you get sleepy. It's so annoying when you have to get up because it wakes you up more! I have a very similar lamp next to my bed (but mine's black and plasticy; I've had it for years).

(Some emoticons have been removed.)
Well done
!! I'm so proud of you
. Maybe, if you resist going to the book fairs you'll be able to buy even less. I'm going to tackle the issue myself seriously next year (I have to). I don't know if I'll do as good as you, but you're a good example to live up to. Good luck for next year!
Aw, thanks, Athena! It's taken me a long time to reduce the number of books I buy, and I still have a way to go.
I'm impressed - both with the number of books you've been buying, but even more with the reduction!
I have to admit this is something I've completely failed to tackle in spite of several efforts. I've started the last few years keeping track of my book buying, only to give up after a few months. But we're both looking towards retirement, and need to cut back to save a bit more, so things have got to give. Constant book buying has to be one of those things, so in 2015......!Thanks Willoyd. I'm also pretty bad at keeping track of my purchases. I usually end up doing a few big updates during the year to catch up.
At least you'll having plenty of reading material ready for you when you retire!
I always figured I'd stop buying books when I moved out of my parents' house because I'd be too busy paying my mortgage, but actually my book buying increased much, much more.
Now that I'm self-employed I don't have nearly as much disposable income, so that has really helped me cut back.
Well done Kylie - that's a very significant reduction in book buying!
I'm happy(ish) with my book buying this year, as I've read more than I've bought, so TBR will definitely be lower at the end of the year than it was at the start, and even then, it wasn't too high.
Thanks Chesil, although I've got nothing on your self-control! I'll never forget when you got your TBR pile down to zero.
Free book?? Wonderful!
And, congratulations on cutting down. It ain't easy!
Thanks Pont! Free books don't come around nearly as often as they should.
I read some exciting news today. Apparently the last book in Arthur C Clarke's Space Odyssey series (3001: The Final Odyssey) is going to be made into a movie! This was actually the first ACC book I ever read (I don't know why I started with the last book, but I remember that I bought it in hardback soon after its release). I'll be interested to see how it's adapted. I just checked IMDB and the release date is listed as 2017, so I have a long few years to wait.

Wow, 73 books! Good for you.
You're not a cheapskate at all, Muggles. You're being sensible. Not only are you saving money, but you're keeping the good folks at the library employed.
-
I love it too! That's pretty cool
. For me often the 'default' cover price isn't actually what it should be. In most cases though I just erase the value but not put anything else back.
I use the User Defined Fields for a variety of things, I'm happy to tell you what I use them for and don't mind if you borrow an idea
.
(not in this order:)
- anticipation rating
- a started to read date
- cover colour
- spine colour
- age range of the book
- type of book (ie. textbook, illustrated, comic, graphic novel, manga)
- a fiction / non-fiction checkbox
- who it was a gift from (my own name if I bought it myself)
- who recommended the book to me
- a used copy checkbox
- a checkbox for whether I've read this copy of the book or not
I just realised that I never replied to thank you for providing the list of user-defined fields you use in BC. I have only now had time to add in some user-defined fields for myself, and I've used several of yours. Thanks so much for the list.
I couldn't think of what to use originally, but when I saw your list, I thought 'Duh! Of course!' I can't believe I didn't think of these myself. I'm obviously not as clever as you. The Fiction/Non-Fiction checkbox is a particularly good idea for me, because I've previously been adding them as labels, but now I can use the labels for more important things.
From your list, I've used Start Date, Fiction/Non-Fiction, Gift and Used Copy (I use this as a label in Goodreads, but it's much better to have it as a checkbox). Inspired by your 'anticipation rating', I've also added a Priority Level field, for which I might use a scale of 1-5 (or similar) to denote how badly I want to read the book.
And yes, the default cover price is often wrong for my books too. I've been adding labels to books to show which ones have the correct price/number of pages etc (my database is really becoming a mess because I just do bits and pieces here and there), but I've just realised that I should add these as user-defined fields too. Ooh, so much work (but fun work) to do!

Hopefully I'll be able to join in for most of the weekend.
So far I only have plans for a few hours on Saturday.
I'll wait until the weekend and see what takes my fancy.
-
I watched Adam's Rib, an old comedy with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Great flick.
-
Great review of The Woman in Black, Alexi.
I haven't seen the movie (yet), but I can't believed they changed the ending! The ending (in the book) was awesome!
-
Glad to help. Also, if you want a cake-free diet, you can eat pies instead.
You're so clever.
And your advice makes so much sense to me.
I'm coming to you for all of my dietary advice from now on!
I was just updating my post on page 1 that shows the number of books I've bought this year. So far I've bought 131 books, which is the smallest number of books I've bought since I started keeping track in 2007! It's fewer than half of the 281 books I bought last year, and just over one-fifth of the 543 books I bought in 2011! I finally feel like I'm getting my book-buying under control.
And if I hadn't gone to the book fair in September, it would be less than half that number. I'm so proud of myself.
Next year I'm going to try resisting both book fairs. If I can do that, I just may be able to read more books than I buy.

At this time of year, I start getting quite excited (
) at the thought of planning my BCF reading list for next year and thinking about what books I want to read. Have you started planning your reading for next year, or will you wait a bit longer (or indeed, not make any plans at all)?
I haven't given it too much thought yet, but in general, I'd like to get back into some 'serious' reading next year. I've read a lot of 'light' books this year, so I want to read more of a mix next year. I miss reading authors like Dickens and Kerouac, and other classics. There are half a dozen books or so that I really wanted to finish reading this year, or that have been on my TBR pile for too long, so I'll be carrying those over into 2015. Also, I read a good number of auto/biographies this year, but I have sadly neglected my ever-expanding collection of other non-fiction books. I must read more non-fiction next year!
-
Fab bookmarks, everyone! Love those creative ones, Emelee.
-
I loved reading your list, Paul, and particularly the three on your Best of the Best list. I have Stoner and Salinger on my TBR pile. Daniel Deronda is a classic that I've heard of but never really looked into, so I didn't know anything about it. I just looked it up and it sounds interesting, so with that and your recommendation, it's going on my wish list, thanks!
And I've also added The Martian to my wish list, thanks to you and Pont.
Speaking of wishes, I wish you would spend more time here with us.
I may have to start nagging Pont when I don't see you around for a while.
-
Great book hauls, Athena! Your library sounds good (maybe they could borrow your sci-fi books to lend out to other people
). I hope you'll get to use the library a lot and save some money by not buying books. I should point out that David Mitchell, the author of DreamNumber9, is a different David Mitchell from the comedian who appears on TV. The comedian has written a couple of humorous non-fiction books, but the other David Mitchell (the one whose book you bought) writes fiction.
-
Excellent idea! I wish they'd had those at some of the weddings I went to when I was a kid. It'll keep them nice and quiet.
-
I'm a big fan of most of the Marvel films too, but Guardians of the Galaxy never really looked like one I'd enjoy. Considering it's rave reviews I should probably get around to it.
I agree with all of this! I remember being unimpressed with the trailer, but I'm clearly the odd one out, so I guess I'd better give it a go.
-
I feel a bit of a fraud listing my top three, because they're the only ones I've read (well, apart from a few other short Christmas stories). That said, I absolutely adore all three books and consider them all among my favourite ever books:
1. A Christmas Carol (it's short but oh so perfect)
2. Great Expectations
3. A Tale of Two Cities
The last two are pretty interchangeable; I can't quite decide which one I like more! In 2015, I think I'll try to read Bleak House (or The Old Curiosity Shop). -
Quiet afternoon at work so I've finished The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and I've nothing else to read with me.
Ooh, I hate it when that happens!
-
But I'll try! You can do a little pushing if you want
Oh and I've been thinking about reading The Phantom Tollbooth soon, now that I have my mojo back!
It's such a short book that I'm sure it won't take a lot of time to read and therefore I can really concentrate on it
What's happened to our book reviewing
Yikes! But do write one of TDitWC at least!
I don't know if it's the pressure of having to write them, or if it's the pressure of the ideal review one would like to write... I've been thinking I'm going to start doing really mini-mini-mini reviews. A couple of sentences and that's it. No pressure! Bam!!
Hurry up and read The Phantom Tollbooth, woman!
I haven't done proper reviews for at least a couple of years now. I just gave up because I never had time and felt too much pressure.
And I hated my reviews because they were never very good. I kind of wish I had tried harder to keep up though, because when I read my old reviews now, they remind me of things that I have since forgotten about the books.
I didn't realise The Shining was on the list. Ooh yay, will get to cross it off
Yay! Like Frankie said, I love it when you 'accidentally' read a book off the list. The Rory list has so many great books on it that it's bound to happen occasionally.
Gilmore Girls was put on Netflix about a month or two ago and I have been re-watching the whole series, which just makes me want to do this challenge even more than I did before.
Definitely part of my goals for 2015 reading.
Excellent! I'm going to try to read a few books from the list in 2015. And I'm due for a re-watch of the whole series. It must be a couple of months since I last finished watching it!
