  1. My family and I celebrated Christmas yesterday because my brother is going to his partner's family's house for Christmas. I had emailed part of my Book Depository wish list to my partner a while ago and hinted that he could perhaps buy me a book off the list for Christmas. I put some of the more expensive books on there because they're not books I would buy for myself, and they would be more special if I received them from someone else. Anyway, he was very naughty and bought me 5 books (out of 6) off the list! I was horrified that he had spent so much money when I meant for him to select only one book. I also gave my brother an option of two books and he bought me both. I feel very spoilt.  :blush2: Here are the books I received:

Thomas Keneally Australians: Flappers to Vietnam: Volume 3

    Shaun Micallef The President's Desk

Margaret Mitchell Gone with the Wind (75th anniversary hardback edition)

LM Montgomery The Complete Journals of LM Montgomery: The PEI Years, 1889–1900

John Steinbeck The Grapes of Wrath (75th anniversary hardback edition)

John/Elaine Steinbeck Steinbeck: A Life in Letters

Mark Twain Autobiography of Mark Twain: Volume 2

  2. I haven't read 3001 (the series is on my wishlist) but I'd be interested in seeing the film! I had no idea they were making one, so thanks for that :)! I remember seeing 2001 the film with my ex but I don't remember a whole lot about the film, unfortunately. I remember liking it but that's pretty much all.

The movie of 2001 is very long but very good. There are long sections where not much happens, so perhaps that's why you don't remember too much. :) Some of the parts are very memorable though. Hal 9000 (the evil computer) is sooo creepy. I'll have to rewatch that again.

Well done with the reduction in book buying.  You've done very well - this year's reduction is a significant one.  :)

Thanks Janet. :) I'm feeling pretty good about it.

That`s really impressive. I thought that keeping count this year would make me aware of how many books I was treating myself to, but that didn`t happen. Instead, I was able to come up with a large range of excuses for my book buying.  :giggle:  :blush2:

Haha. Excuses can always be found when needed, right? :D

  3. I love my kindle, and haven't found it to be an impediment to my tree book buying - I have hundreds of both!

I hope I didn't come across as being anti-Kindle. I just like to tease Raven at any chance I get (and he kind of set himself up for it). :D

I've contemplated buying a Kindle but I can't justify it when I have an iPad. And I don't read ebooks often enough to worry about the screen being backlit.

Kylie relaxes with her books . . .

    I wish!

I don't have a book light. Or a book mark. You're just making me feel totally inadequate now . . .

Next you'll be telling us you fold the corners of pages!

I am surprised that Frankie gave you access to her Aussie Trip photo collection! :D

    Hahaha!

    I didn't!! My computer's been hacked! :o

    :P

  4. Love the series, we've watched the first five seasons, but I'm waiting for the sixth to complete, then binge watch. :D This was our introduction to Alan Cummings. He is marvelous!

I had to look up who you meant, and yes, he is great! I'm still trying to work out whether he is more 'good' or more 'bad'. I guess one of the things I love about the show is the ambiguity of the characters. They are mostly 'good' but can disappoint with the decisions they make.

Yesterday we watched the first episode of Sherlock, season one. It was pretty good! I look forward to see the other two episodes. I also have the DVDs of season two and three so I look forward to see those too, in time.

Ooh, lucky! I totally love this show. All of the episodes are awesome. Cumberbatch and Freeman are wonderful.

I'm watching Christmas carols broadcast from Sydney.

  5. I can't imagine ever changing my mind about the movie. :) Given your comments, I'm sure I'll agree that they're nothing alike, but I'll always love the movie, even if I end up loving the book too. Gosh, I'm so curious about it now! I think I'll have to make a start on it before the year is out.

  6. Lucky you! :) I think my family figures that I have so many books that any they give me will just get 'lost' among the rest and that I'll never read it. I did specifically request books from my partner and brother this year, so I'll see how I go. ;)

  7. That sounds pretty unfair, Michelle! Where I used to work, we received quite a few sick days per year at full pay. Of course, now that I work for myself, if I ever get sick, I either have to 'suck it up' and keep working, or earn less money while I take time to recover. Sometimes I miss having a regular job. (Sorry to go off-topic, Claire.)

  8. I saw Girl, Interrupted for the first time yesterday. I enjoyed it, but now want to read the book.

One of my favourite ever movies! So much wonderful acting. I haven't seen it in a few years though. I started avoiding it when I started suffering from depression. But I'm so much better these days that I really should watch it again!

The book is so much better! But don't expect it to bear anything more than a situational resemblance to the flm

:o Whaaat?! I've only ever read bad reviews of the book! Mostly recently, Frankie rated it 2 stars on Goodreads. I have it on my TBR pile and still intend to read it though. I just plan to go into it with very low expectations. Perhaps they're best viewed as two completely separate entities.

ETA: OK, I take that back, a little. I just checked Goodreads and the average rating for the book is 3.86, which is a fairly good rating. I guess I've just paid more attention to the negative reviews in the past. :)

  9. Your favourite read of the year? I gave several books a perfect score this year, but the best book for me, by far, was The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. It's the true story of the building of the World's Fair in Chicago in the late 1800s/early 1900s, as well as a parallel story (also true) about a serial killer who used the flurry of activity of Chicago at this time to cover his many murders. Incredible stories and very atmospheric writing.

Your favourite author of the year? Agatha Christie (I read And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express and Hercule Poirot's Christmas)

Your most read author of the year? Lemony Snicket (4) followed by Agatha Christie (3) and James Dashner (3)

Your favourite book cover of the year? Hollow City by Ransom Riggs. Honourable mention to The Collected Works of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin (what's not to love about a book cover full of books? :D)

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? I always keep reading to the end.

The book that most disappointed you? The first three books in James Dashner's Maze Runner series.

The funniest book of the year? The Weirdest Things Customers Say in Bookshops by Jen Campbell. Honourable mentions to Beyond the Great Indoors by Ingvar Ambjornsen and The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford

Your favourite literary character this year? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

Your favourite children's book this year? The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Huckleberry Finn. Honourable mention to The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The latter was a re-read, but it's a lovely and sad story.

Your favourite classic of the year? The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

Your favourite non-fiction book this year? The Devil in the White by Erik Larson

Your favourite biography this year? Escape from Camp 14 by Blaine Harden

Your favourite collection of short stories this year? The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Your favourite poetry collection this year? I didn't read any poetry this year.

Your favourite illustrated book of the year? Rumo & His Miraculous Adventures by Walter Moers

Your favourite publisher of the year? Hmm...I wasn't particularly paying attention to the publishers of the books I was reading, but Penguin is always a big favourite of mine.

Your favourite audiobook of the year? I don't listen to audiobooks.

Your favourite re-read of the year? The only book I re-read this year was the play of Twelve Angry Men (although I also read it for only the first time this year). I was part of an amateur theatre group that put this play on (I was the prompt and stage manager), so I read the play twice a week, every week, for about three months. How's that for re-reading!? :D

  10. Thanks Athena!

    My Day in Books

I began the day with escape from Camp 14.
On my way to work I saw murder on the Orient Express
and walked by 12 angry men
    to avoid mortality
but I made sure to stop at the giving tree.

In the office, my boss said, let's kill uncle
and sent me to research the Rosie Project.
At lunch with Jimmy Corrigan: the smartest kid on earth
I noticed the secret diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4
    under talking pictures
then went back to my desk, running with scissors.

Later, on the journey home, I bought a book to love
    because I have cocaine blues.
Then settling down for the evening, I picked up a street cat named Bob
    and studied rivers of London
before saying goodnight to hell's angels.

I'm pretty pleased with this. :D

  11. We seem to be hurtling towards Christmas and the end of the year, so it must be time for the annual BCF Book Awards! :D

The lovely Poppyshake started this back in 2010, but as she's feeling under the weather at the moment, I'm sure she won't mind me posting on her behalf. I'll be back later with my answers!  :grinhat:

  12. Ooh, what an unexpected surprise! Did you maintain your composure? :D

I was pretty young in the 80s, but my earliest TV celebrity crush was John Stamos from Full House. Not sure what I'd do if he suddenly walked into my house! I wouldn't say I have a crush on him anymore, but he has certainly aged well.  :blush2:

  13. I had started to read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin but after about 20% of the way through it I don't seem to be in the mood for it so I am going to put it aside and grab something else.

I did the same. In the end, I think it took me about a year to read! It was good, but not quite what I was expecting.
