I've now seen the first two episodes and think it's ok.
Peter Krause just has the ability to make it ok though doesn't he? And Donald Sutherland is great too

I had hear that the McNabb stuff was called 'Git-Lit':D
Oooh I like that one
-
But I love Nick Hornby!!!! And Tony Parsons for that
I always think of bloke's books as having a big shouty name on the front and written by people like Andy Mc Nabb

I'm wondering if 'A Spot of Bother' (for instance) had been written by a woman it would be classed as chick-lit
Thinking about how many books are classed as such, but don't really fulfill the quite narrow brief, I'm thinking we may be reverting back to the days of George Eliot

Sir Alan really doesn't like snobbish behaviour or those that think they are superior to other people amongst the ranks.
Which is weird as he demonstrates quite a lot of inverted snobbery himself.

Did you see 'You're Fired' afterwards? At least Nicholas had the good grace to look suitably embarrassed by some of his comments!
He came across well didn't he?
-
Ahhh....love this programme. Did anyone see it last night? Ooh, there are a lot of horrible snobs in there this time. I was so pleased that awful Nicholas got fired - him and his "I was so disappointed to get a B in one of my GCSEs when everything else was a straight A" - leave it out!
As for having a pop at football fans (he didn't actually say the words "working class" but we all know that's what he meant), I don't think this was the wisest thing to say to Suralan...
Odd how the 'posh boys' appear to have divided opinion this time.
Personally, I felt sorry for them as the geezer-blokes did very much split off and blame them for the shortcomings of the whole team. I thought Alex should have gone as he was a useless PM but he was great in the Boardroom. Nicholas just went to pieces which was a shame as he appeared to have had all his spirit bullied out of him with that diatribe in the market about how it was all his fault.
Raef looks like he's about to be the most mirth-worthy. After all, it's not like he labelled shark as hamster is it?

I often see Marian Keyes talked about as chick-lit but to me she isn't as her books are generally very humorous with dark moments
On the whole I'd say chick-lit is generally aimed at younger women, they also tend to be quite aspirational with romance, friendship or whatever as the plot

Twin Peaks or The Mole

The cover on my copy too Gyre.
This is one of the covers of my favourite book. I think the cover is lovely too:

Thanks for the Oxfam link. Didn't know it existed. You can't beat rummaging in a shop though, can you?
I use Amazon too...you can't argue with a selection that big...buy lots from the s/h private sellers. Likewise with music. You go in a shop and their selection pales compared to online...natural evolution! And who doesn't enjoy those packages coming through the door?I feel like I've stepped into 'Primeval' with all these anomalies

Elizabeth George, just reading one of hers for the first time. Her plot and characters have lots of depth and she weaves the story in all sorts of ways to keep you guessing. The characters seem like real people too. I shall be sorry when I finish this book
I saw an Inspector Linley thing this afternoon on TV
The last book I read of hers was dreadful compared with all the others. I've still bought her latest though.
Oh yes, don't forget to read them in order, probably more relevant to do so with hers than with many of the series

You mean they turned down all those Mills & Boons?
I officially am not a fan of yours for that comment
Thanks for the Oxfam link. Didn't know it existed. You can't beat rummaging in a shop though, can you?Try telling that to Amazon
I ordered four books yesterday, you pay the same amount of P&P however much you order so I expected it all to be packaged together. Today I got three of the books, all in fantastic condition, and all posted seperately

Oooh Mark Billingham. I love him

Johnathan Kellerman springs to mind as you read his wife
Harlan Coben
Carol O'Connell
Minette Walters
Peter James

I love that cover of Weaveworld too Gyre. I can't think of any off-hand that I love but am sure I'll spend time in this thread nodding along.
Oh yes, here's one:

Ah. So I'm not missing anything then?

I'm envious of all these people mentioning Borders. They sound great and I've never been in one as far as I know

You can get Oxfam books online too

Glad to hear it!
Don't take these things for granted though

Yeah i've bought a few books off ebay too, but it really annoys me when people try to overcharge for postage, like putting

Anywhere, really. But it's sad there are less second hand book shops these days. A sign that less people are reading. Or maybe they are, and they're just not giving their books away!
The one here closed down years ago. It was a great shop but the fiction shelves were only one and a half full bookshelves. Strange as he bought anything off me.
The market has a few blokes who sell second-hand books but I won't use them as they are fussy about what they buy. I took a suitcase full of books down to one once and he only wanted three!!!! So I put them all back in the case and gave them all to Oxfam instead.
I buy my books from; Tesco (when it's a 2 for

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
That was my favourite for a long long time as a teen - it's a great book
Oh, how could I have forgotten that one? My ex used to dress up as a priest and- nonevermind.
Didn't the TV show put you off him though?
-
I haven't read it. I've seen bits of the film though!
I read it and didn't realise I hadn't seen the film until I was partway through. Best way round isn't it?
Anyway, you should read it. It's marvellous. Such a shame she never wrote more really (apart from some unpublished scribblings that have now been published)
I don't think anybody could be disappointed with this book

All those of you who loved Birdsong. I must say, I did enjoy it but of the 'Trilogy', I much preferred the other two, especially 'The Girl from the Lion D'Or' I felt there were too many long war bits in Birdsong (much like Atonement)
