  1. Your favourite read of the year? Mr Pip by Lloyd Jones Your favourite author of the year? Graeme Simsion (The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect) Your most read author of the year? E.F.Benson (Mapp and Lucia books) The funniest book of the year? I've read several humorous books this year and I can't really choose one. During a convalescence, I ploughed through the complete Mapp and Lucia series by E.F. Benson and later books by Tom Holt and Guy Fraser-Sampson involving the same characters. All very funny. I'm loving The Diary of a Provincial Lady series by E.M.Delafield, she's a most witty writer. The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect are also wonderfully funny. Your favourite literary character this year? Mr Pip (from the book by the same name by Lloyd Jones) Your favourite children's book this year? Charlotte's Web by E.B. White and Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne Jones Your favourite classic of the year? The Importance Of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde Your favourite non-fiction book this year? Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom Your favourite collection of short stories this year? The Saki Collected Fiction of H.H.Munro Your favourite poetry collection this year? Like Chrissy, my favourite poems are by Stiggy. He has such a unique voice and a very deft way with words. He paints wonderfully original word pictures and I love how they are so multi-layered in meaning. Your favourite audiobook of the year? I sometimes listen to audiobooks when I can't sleep and my favourites are by PG Wodehouse. However, I don't usually get into them very far before my mind wanders off and I fall asleep
  2. but I'm sure there'll be no problem changing it to yours. They tootled off to the check-out counter to enquire. Meanwhile, Itsme was rather relieved he'd whittled the female household population down to two. Apart from anything else, it was hell trying to find a vacant spot for the bathroom, and ..........
  3. A Thousand Beautiful Things ~ Annie Lennox
  4. 'Can you see any other dear Dexy's here?' she giggled, 'of course I'm talking to you!' 'Well then,' Dex replied, 'let's go peruse your collection right now!' 'You fancy a trip to Jamaica then?' Carlina asked. 'Just wait while I grab my passport!'
  5. You're right Pont, I should have worded that better. I didn't mean that helpful advice shouldn't be given, just not in a belittling way. Beginners especially, can very easily have all confidence in their writing taken away by thoughtless remarks.
  6. Red Wine, Mistakes, Mythology ~ Jack Johnson
  7. Country Wine ~ Dave Stewart
  8. Poison and Wine ~ The Civil Wars (such a pity this singing duo have split up, they were making some beautiful music together)
  9. she'd enjoy slowly teaching him how to pronounce it correctly .....later. It could take a while, Jamaican was a bit tricky to get your tongue round just right. She may just have to help him with that too. She looked dreamily at Dex.
  10. Bottle Of Wine ~ Tom Paxton
  11. .....and staggered back again, laden down with drinks. He threw back a couple of doubles to bolster his confidence but it had the effect instead of making his metaphors and proverbs even more mixed than usual. 'This is going to be as easy as killing two birds in the bush with one rolling stone' he declared to no-one in particular. Carlina giggled. 'You can't squeeze moss from a rolling stone and eat it too,' she remarked. Dex's eyebrows shot up in surprise. He felt he'd finally .....
  12. She was a German Shepherd cross, a stray I was given. She was the most beautiful thing, and had the loveliest nature, everyone loved her and she loved everyone. She followed children to school several times and the headmaster had to send her home with one of them. She disappeared one time and I was distraught, the local pound didn't have her and after I advertised in the paper, someone rang up to say a dog fitting her description was living next door to them. It turned out a young boy had taken her home and tied her up with twine, she had rope burns all round her neck. I was overjoyed to have her back again. But obedience wasn't her strong point, I never had the heart to growl at her very convincingly
  13. 'What do you suggest, Dex?' asked Carlina, 'I am not familiar with many of these drinks.' 'Gin and orange for me, Dex, thanks, make it a triple will you? I like to taste the gin.' That was Poppy. Itsme wandered in, 'Usual for me, mate.' Dex began to wonder about his credit card balance, but his concerns were quickly brushed aside when he viewed .....
  14. I think I read The Bafut Beagles and A Zoo In My Luggage where he met and visited the Fon. Very funny. I've read all the books I could find by him. The first I read at primary school but I can't remember which one it was.
  15. I know Sean!!! I've read his whole series many times ( the other two, in case you haven't seen them, are Birds, Beasts, and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods ) They are probably my favourite books of all time, for feel-good, cheer-me-up, chillaxing Such a wonderfully funny, eccentric family and an idyllic setting.
  16. traipsed in. 'Where are you going with those dweebs?' Poppy whispered to Petrel. 'We're going to a anime convention, I'm going to dress up as a Naruto character.' 'A what????' But too late, Petrel was gone. For the first time Dex saw Carlina and Anna ......
  17. The Golden Retriever is just gorgeous! (I took my dog to dog obedience lessons one time and the instructor told me we were the worst trained couple she'd taught ) Here's another doggie one for Christmas
  18. 'Time we got going, Petrel,' Dex growled. 'But why? The night is young. I'm going to give the girls a ring to see if they want to join us. But you go home if you want, you look a bit tired.' 'I'm not the slightest bit tired!' Dex retorted, 'I just .........
  19. Managed to track down the original TV series of 'My Family and Other Animals'. It's the story of Gerald Durrell's childhood on Corfu Island and absolutely delightful.
