Just you wait, Hammy Hamster.

Lol - I'm exactly the opposite Kell! I don't much care for the Kidby ones, but I love the Josh Kirby ones! To me they're colourful, frenetic and fun, just like Discworld and its inhabitants.

Can you resist buying in a bookshop?
Mia replied to Galactic Space Hamster's topic in General Book Discussions
I can leave a bookshop without buying anything, especially if it's Waterstone's as I don't think they're very cheap. But I don't like doing it - I feel kind of annoyed and disappointed if I haven't bought anything. -
Terrible jokes? How dare you! It took me a good 15 seconds to come up with that one.

No, I'm Mia! Welcome back Hammy! I'm glad you've started posting here again.

Hopefully you'll like it better this time round, Janet! Northern Lights is probably my favourite of the three (The Amber Spyglass is my least fave).

I couldn't have put it better myself Kell, so I won't try! It's always annoyed me that he's pigeon-holed as a horror writer.

I was browsing in a cheapy books shop on Saturday, picked up a likely book and opened it at random to see if I liked the writing style and whether it caught my interest (I always do this with unfamiliar authors). Anyway, the name of the lead character leapt off the page at me: Champagne D'Vyne! It might have been tongue-in-cheek (it was chick-lit I think), but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a book with a character name like that in it!

Lost in Translation (Madcow - The Lost Boys is the exact film I was thinking of to follow when I posted Raiders!) -

Favourite books from childhood?
Mia replied to babypinkcandygirl's topic in Children's / Young Adult
Apart from Enid Blyton's books, I almost exclusively read pony stories, as I was obsessed with horses! I enjoyed the "Jill" series by Ruby Ferguson and some of the Pullein-Thompson books, but my absolute favourites were the "Jinny at Finmory" books by Patricia Leitch. They were stories about a rather rebellious girl and her Arab mare, Shantih. I loved these books, as they were so different to most pony stories and the heroine wasn't the usual goody two shoes. In fact, I recently spent a small fortune buying them all off Ebay because I wanted to re-read them, and my copies are packed away somewhere inaccessible. -
Malory Towers / St. Clare's by Enid Blyton
Mia replied to babypinkcandygirl's topic in Children's / Young Adult
I loved the Mallory Towers books! A friend of my mum's passed them onto me and I thought they were great. I was fascinated by such things as lacrosse and the midnight feasts - it all sounded such fun. I''ll still have the books packed away somewhere. -
This is similar to Jenmck's thread, but I don't think it's quite the same. She was talking about books which feature the same character(s), but are each a separate story, like murder mysteries (I think), whereas I want to talk about books that are one story which continues over two or more books, like Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. I don't know whether you would call them a series or a serial. Anyway... What I wanted to ask is: has anyone ever got really fed up with a serial but has carried on reading even though they're not enjoying the books, purely to find out what happens in the end? I'm at this stage with Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom books. I know they're kid's books, so I shouldn't really be complaining, but to me they are incredibly samey and quite dull, and yet I keep on buying them!! There are seven of the damn things and I'm up to number five, and I'd quite happily give up except that I want to know what happens in the end! Does anyone else do this, or is it just me?

I'd agree with the Peter Kay one - I actually cried with laughter at one point! I also found "Round Ireland with a Fridge" by Tony Hawks(?) very funny. I love the Adrian Mole books too.

Well, I finished mine a few days ago (Plays Extravagant by GB Shaw) and have not even thought about writing my review. Well, I did think about it once or twice, but quickly moved on to thinking about other things instead. I quite enjoyed the plays actually (once I'd got over my annoyance at Penguin deciding to print it how I assume it was originally written, that is with no apostrophes in contractions, e.g. youll, shouldnt, wont etc - it looked so strange). I just don't feel up to writing a literary review about them...

For anyone who's missed some of this programme or given up on it and wishes they hadn't... BBC2 is running a "Heroes Catch-Up" weekend! Tonight they are showing 6 episodes in a row, then 3 tomorrow!

It must be 20 years since I read this (the abridged version), and I think I've only read it once. I enjoyed it, but can't remember much about it so it's definitely due a re-read.

Dammit - my book arrived yesterday! Like Hazeltree said, my book has a 30-page intro before the first play actually begins! I might skip that and just read the plays.
