Tracy Marie's 2007 Reading List
everydayxangels replied to everydayxangels's topic in Past Book Logs
I put Nineteen Minutes on hold. Not sure why. but I did. I'll definitely be picking it up again. Everything was just so extreme. Obviously the main subject matter is something extreme. The cliques were extreme, and the way they were described... The way Josie was suicidal without much explination was extreme. And other things. But the writing was really good, just from the beginning I'm now reading a library book. Never Let Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Has anyone read it? I think I'll search for it, but it's so confusing. I can't tell what's going on. With the carers and donors at the beginning, and then the past-tense stuff of her School years. I dont get it... My guess is that it's something like the movie The Island, where they're kept alive only to give organs and stuff to other people. They talk about the outside, and things.... and it's just kinda weird. -

I finished The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and it was a rather quick read. almost too quick for me. But I figure all of Alboms books are like that. I enjoyed it, and I thought it was a wonderful book that made you think, But I enjoy the books that throw you into a world all it's own and it's 500 pages, and you devour every single page. I'm going to start an ARC now. finally. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. and I guess it is a Columbine-esque type of book. -

I finished Cage of Stars!!!! This book was so good, I cannot even believe it! I dont care if it's speaking too early, but this one will definitely be one of my favorite books of 2007. I absolutely loved the comfortable lifestyle Mitchard painted in the-middle-of-no-where town in Utah, and the loving parents that Veronica had. I wanted to jump right in and grow up in that kind of house. It also taught me a lot about mormons. Even though these were fictional characters, it broke a lot of stereo-types i guess. I enjoyed this book SOOOO much -
You've made me add Secret Life of Bee's to my list of books to read! Right now that list is at 54 Books.
-
The Virgin Suicides - I personally liked this book! more so at the beginning. Towards the end I was thinking, "c'mon, just get on with it already." The Constant Gardener - I was so bumbed to learn that this was a book after I saw the movie. I can't read a book after I see the movie. Dunno why. But seeing the movie after the book is always a treat. On Beauty - I didn't like this one at all. I gave it the 75 page chance I give all my books, and normally the plot improves by then, but this one was just HORRIBLY SLOW i didn't stick around to finish. Devil in the White City - NOT for the faint of heart. Some of the murders with the details will make your skin CRAWL.
-
that's pretty sweet! if I didn't get the job at my bookstore, I would have tried to get one at the library.
-
Where do you work? I dont mean specifically where, but what kind of place that would have lots of books on the shelves.
-
Agreed. Incredibly mixed. I personally didn't enjoy it all that much. It was okay, but there are more wonderful books I'd rather enjoyed. I personally liked her own memoir of her rape, Lucky, much better. that sounds incredibly sadistic, I'm sure. but the writing was much better.
-
I'm glad you liked Fahrenheit 451! I tried reading this book about two years ago, but couldn't get into it. I guess I just was not ready for this kind of material. It will eventually be read. I have heard a lot about Life of Pi and I know it is a book club book in my area, but the cover, the title, and the back cover overview really didnt intrigue me. Glad to know it wont be worthwile should i ever feel the urge to pick it up.

Tracy Marie's 2007 Reading List

I am so thrilled with Cage of Stars! This book is absolutely delicious. And such a nice relief from the gravity of Snow Flower. Not to say that Cage of Stars is light and fluffy, it just doesnt have that constant pain that Snow Flower did. Already 2 fabulous books in 2007! I was thinking of adding Jacquelyn Mitchard's book Breakdown Lane to my list of books to read. might take a while to get around to reading, but I think I will add it. It was on my list when that list was up in the hundreds, but then got cut for some reason. Lack of interest. And it will be one of the higher up books to read, also! It'll come right after the 11 Library books, and then after the 20 something ARC's. Yup. it's a priority. -
Tracy Marie's 2007 Reading List

I guess a goal that I have for myself, as far as reading goes, I want to read more books than I have last year. Last year I really only started to read consistantly in August, and read only 12 books I think. I want to read atleast 4 books a month. that's 48 books in one year. That's pretty good I feel like I read pretty slow though compared to someone like Kell who reads at the speed of light. It takes me like a week to get through a 250 page book. Anywho, I finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, and I thought it was incredibly wonderful. I dont do reviews because everything comes out as a jumbled mess, and less helpful than just not even writing a review. The book has to do with foot-binding in the first part, which was the hardest to get through, and the troubles of being a woman in communist 1800 China is shown throughout. It was heartbreaking the way that even the women themselves referred to themselves as worthless. -

lol, the store I work had have been hiring highschool girls for quite a while. Like 15 years. Infact one of the highschool girls from '94 is infact the store manager now, and she's wonderful. It's pretty weak pay though. $6/hr. minimum wage for people under 18. But i dont have to support myself so I dont really mind. -
They're just difficult to hold, and the print is too small, the paper to rough. I'm just fussy

Lol, I'm only fifteen, so my contacts aren't anywhere near the book business. It's apart of my job, and I work at a local independent bookstore. We have three shelves in the back filled with ARC's and organized by released date. For adult Fiction books, I'd say there's easily 120. Mystery about 60. For Non-Fiction probably 50. And for Kid/YA there's about 100. it's the biggest perk of the job. Even got an ARC to Mitch Alboms new book even though it has obviously been released by now. -
I prefer hardcovers obviously. But I like Trade Paper-backs prices The only type of book I will NOT read is Mass Market paperbacks. those are just uncomfortable.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Philipa Gregory - She's a very inconsistant author, though the Other Boleyn Girl, atleast i've heard, is wonderful. One book I should anti-reccomend is Virgin Earth by her. Jemima J by Jane Green - I enjoyed it! it was a classic chiclit though. Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See - Reading that right now! and enjoying it! However, it is very detailed, and well written, the downfall is that the story material is rather depressing, and since you are so drawn in, it made me a little sad too Wicked Pleasures by Penny Vincenzi - I've only heard fabulous things about her "No Angel" Series, which I want to get ahold of as fast as I can.
-
This is some list! Jane Smiley - have you read anything by her? I started to read her up coming book Ten Days in the Hills but the first fifty pages were about this elderly couple recently in love, about making a softcore porno - with details! I definitely had to take a pass. The cover was definitely beautiful and made me curious. On Beauty by Zadie Smith - I've heard mixed reviews, and the bold cover made me grab it, and I started to read it, but it was just so bland, and the plot really wasn't going anywhere, so I had to drop it. I've heard White Teeth was very good, haven't read it myself though. Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom - I have been wanting to read this book for a long time! And especially so after reading For One More Day. He is a FANTASTIC author, no doubt. Lucky and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold - Both were very good, however, i personally felt that Lucky was plenty better. There are some parts that are very tough to get through, but a good read, and i feel, better than The Lovely Bones.

What do the colors and boldings mean. a legend would be helpful I'm assuming the unbold are wanting to be read, bold are new ones, and the red ones i'm.... lost on.

So I was away for a while, but now I'm Back I read only one book in December, and I believe I dropped quite a few. It was Astrid & Veronika by Linda Olsson, and it was VERY good. It will be coming out in paperback (not being released in hardcover), In either February or March. I personally can't wait. Right now, I'm reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I've heard only wonderful things about it. It's good, but i feel very dark about it. It brings you so far into Lily's and Snow Flowers world, that it just makes me feel so sad. Because of the foot-bindings and the way females are treated, and such. So that's all I've been up to, as far as reading.

I finished The Handmaid and the Carpenter, and I personally thought it was a wonderful book. Currently only in Hardcover, though I think it would be very worth it I am now Reading Overture by Yael Goldstein, which is set to be released on January 16th. It's about a famous violinist, and tells the story of her young adulthood, her college career, and then follws her to the present. It begins with an interview of this woman, named Natasha, and then she has a flashback to her childhood and how she started the violin. i'm only 75 pages into it, but it is wonderful so far.
-
I am about fifty pages until I am finished with The Handmaid and the Carpenter. It's a novel about Mary and Joseph and the birth of baby Jesus. I am really really enjoying it very much.

"Ned knew that she and a young man had begun courting, and he believed her tears must have resulted from something he had said or done. Possibly the two had been "indiscreet", although he did not think Gertrude capable of so drastic a moral lapse. The more he pressed her for an explination, the more trouble and adamant she became" Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
