    Why?

Why keep a blog? How does it really help you? I'm interested it the reasoning and would love to hear everyone's own version of why.
  2. Nabokov indeed! ROTFALOL!! Definitely got my attention.
  3. I have Imperium in my TBR stack. Another I can recommend on Cicero is Pillar of Iron by Taylor Caldwell. I have read it, and reread it several times. One of my favorites of all time. Love your quote!
  4. I love the quote in the front.....from Cicero, my absolute favorite historical figure! Gonna use it in my signature. :D
  5. Ohhhh! I have book in hand now, but am finishing up a few before I can get to it.....grrrrrrr! I really look forward to this 'un.
  6. I'll look for it. Thanks.
  7. Let me recommend Autobiography of a Geisha by Sayo Masuda translated by G.G. Rowley. Talk about an eye opener. Well written, heart wrenching story that is from what I've heard much grittier than Memoirs was, I have Memoirs in my stack too, unread so far.
  8. Oh great I look forward to that. Night.
  9. Hmmmm. Maybe Laughter in the Dark, or Pnin. Timofey Pnin is one of my favorite characters in Nabokovonia. Lets wait until closer to the event. Oh Yay!
  10. Just say where and when! You know I'd looked at Fingerpost before, but couldn't make up my mind, but when you liked it so much I was convinced. So thanks. As to which Nabokov, have you read any others yet?
  11. Right now I am almost finished My Dream of You by Nuala O'Faolain, and have started Dreams of My Russian Summers by Andrei Makine. The latter was compared to Nabokov, but although there is some base for that, I don't think it is that strong a resemblance. I do like his writing. It's crisper than Nabokov, but descriptive all the same. I might, or should finish The Lover by Marguarite Duras, I've had it half finished for months now. But I saw the film, so got side tracked.
  12. I will, but I've got at least 3, well maybe 2 before I do.
  13. This is one of the books I ordered, coming Thursday.
  14. I'm not usually too surprised at an ending, but this one managed that. I have to say that about three-quarters through, I was stalled, and really didn't feel like reading it anymore, but a turn around came, and I'm glad I plugged through.
  15. I enjoyed Timeline and Air Frame, and probably a few others I can't remember the names of at present.
  16. Whoops, wrong mother, I meant Alice the mother of the baby. I pulled the book from the other pile finally. Michelle said she was starting, but was waylaid by other bookish obligations. So a bit later I expect.
  17. I believe I liked it better in retrospect than during actually. I was so irritated with the mother...gosh, I'm forgetting her name already. But, oh I won't say more till more people finish it. Suffice it to say, I was surprised at the ending, and not altogether pleasantly.
  18. Thanks Michelle, certainly looks mo bettah!
  19. Oh. OK. But it didn't show up in the reply box. Sorry.
  20. I don't know why it came out screwy up there, it looked normal in the reply to thread box.....
  21. Whoops, spoke too soon, here is the other recipe from Oprah's website. Oprah loves martinis—and this is one of her favorites! INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice 2 oz. Absolute Citron vodka OR white tequila 1 oz. Cointreau liquor Cup of ice Optional: Splash of sparkling water Optional: Squeeze of lemon
  22. I looked on Oprah's website for the Pomegranate Martini, but couldn't find the recipe, however this one was on there..... Oprah loves martinis—and this is one of her favorites! She served it at the Legends Ball! INGREDIENTS The juice of 6 lemons 4 Tbsp. sugar 6 fresh mint leaves 4 shots of vodka Ice in shaker A sugar-rimmed martini glass Mix lemon juice, sugar and vodka in a martini shaker filled with ice. Shake well and pour into sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with mint. Sorry to say it, but to me it sounds like a waste of good vodka, if you're going to drink vodka, drink vodka....if you want lemonade...drink lemonade.
  23. JLB and VN.....
  24. This is the one I was talking about. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114117/
  25. I haven't read it yet, but I've caught the last half or so of the film a couple of times. The tension created wondering will they?, won't they? was almost unbearable. I have to read the book! Not sure of the actor that plays her Captain, but /sigh/ he is beautiful.
