  1. Reading this just now and have to say its quite boring - about 1/3 of the way through and found myself drifting off! Hope it improves..
  2. Great review Gyre - Thanks. I have had Wicked on my wish list for a while but havent got round to it. I will adding this to my list and am hopefully pick up one or the other at the library this week. Kx
  3. I dont read them, they annoy me at times as I feel they rob me of the end of my book. I think 'must be a good 20 pages to go...' then turn the page to find the end of my book and the taster chapter. If I liked the book I would be tempted to get look for more by the same author but I dont read the tasters as I know I would want to read on. Kx
  4. I dont watch this but did anyone see Patsy Palmer on Jonathan Ross on Friday night? - she would make a fab Nancy!
  5. Pure car crash telly- I love it! Who encourages some of these people to audition?
  6. I wouldnt start in the middle of a series knowingly, I would always prefer to start at the beginning - as its a very good place to start!
  7. Sorry slightly O/T I bought my daughter the full set of Moomin books by Tove Jansson, would recommend them but def. for when your child is a bit older. Kell - Would highly recommend Hairy Maclary by Linley Dodds and Dr Suess books - both are firm favourites in our house. Kx
  8. You sour puss I have to say I am a bit like that - I dont usually find comedy books or films funny but would highly recommend either of the above if you want a laugh.
  9. I am the main reader in our house, I read anything and everything - even backs of packets if I dont have a book to hand. My OH is much more into TV but I convinced him to read his first book as an adult last year at the age of 33! He is dyslexic (I can believe I just struggled to spell that word!) and finds reading difficult but I am proud he finished the book - Cold Granite by Stuart Macbride. I sneaked another book into his bag before he went offshore this time but he hasnt started it yet. I am actively encouraging my 4 year old daughters reading habit - I buy her books regularly and we usually go to the library every fortnight. Reading is so important for children.
  10. Fantastic books - def. laugh out loud, The Snapper is my personal favourite.
  11. The book I am reading at the moment - Nobody Loves a Ginger Baby by Laura Marney - is so funny. I havent read many books that have made me laugh out loud but this one has done it a few times and I am just over half way through.
  12. Stick with it Heather, I felt like that for a wee while but its worth it Kx
  13. Great review Nici, Thanks I watched an interview with the author on Tv last week and wondered why I had never heard of the book. He was talking about how it took him 18 years to write the sequal ~ World Without End. I will be on the look out for this once I have managed to clear a bit of Mount TBR
  14. Ooh that sounds nice Talisman. I have heard of Soya milk but not Soya cream - are you vegan?
  15. Glad you enjoyed it Davo, such a good book! Kx
  16. Thanks Folks - Think I will read Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less. I have to admit to thinking the guy is a pompous lying prat and I wouldnt normally want to fund a criminals bank balance but am willing to give his books a go as I already have them.
  17. I bought Eden Close in a charity shop this week. I hadnt heard of the book before reading When or Where but my daughter is called Eden. She is almost 5 and I thought I was being really original with her name - he ho!
  18. Would love to hear what you think when your finished Inver 'After you'd gone' is the one I am after most, but would love to read anything else by Maggie O'Farrell after enjoying Esme so much. At the moment I have a self imposed book embargo, no new book purchases as I have am saving for our hols - charity shops, bookrings and library only.
  19. I am gutted that Simon has gone! Change from my comments last week - I really dislike Claire!!!! She should have been sacked - what a b1tch. Undermining the team leader seems to be her thing. Also Lucinda - why is she there?
  20. I usually put Creme Fraiche on baked Sweet Potato - sometimes mix some garlic or paprika with the Creme Fraiche. I cant think of any other fillings I have put in, when I bake them I usually have them along with chicken or salmon and salad. HTH Kx
  21. 20. The Vanishing of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell ~ 9 Synopsis A significant departure for Maggie O'Farrell in terms of maturity and style, the paperback publication of THE VANISHING ACT OF ESME LENNOX will be an unmissable event. Set between the 1930s,and the present, Maggie O'Farrell's new novel is the story of Esme, a woman edited out of her family's history, and of the secrets that come to light when, sixty years later, she is released from care, and a young woman, Iris, discovers the great aunt she never knew she had. The mystery that unfolds is the heartbreaking tale of two sisters in colonial India and 1930s Edinburgh - of the loneliness that binds them together and the rivalries that drive them apart, and lead one of them to a shocking betrayal - but above all it is the story of Esme, a fiercely intelligent, unconventional young woman, and of the terrible price she is made to pay for her family's unhappiness. This is vintage Maggie O'Farrell: an impassioned, intense, haunting family drama - a stunning imagining of a life stolen, and reclaimed. Read this book in a day - I was so drawn in I was even reading it while preparing supper and folding washing! and although I had guessed some of what was coming, I was still surprised by this haunting book. I will definitely be reading more by Maggie O'Farrell.
  22. 19. Tears of a Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith ~ 8.5 Synopsis THE NO.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY introduced the world to the one and only Precious Ramotswe - the engaging and sassy owner of Botswana's only detective agency. TEARS OF THE GIRAFFE, McCall Smith's second book, takes us further into this world as we follow Mama Ramotswe into more daring situations ...Among her cases this time are wayward wives, unscrupulous maids, and the challenge to resolve a mother's pain for her son who is long lost on the African plains. Indeed, Mma Ramotswe's own impending marriage to the most gentlemanly of men, Mr J.L.B. Matekoni, the promotion of Mma's secretary to the dizzy heights of Assistant Detective, and the arrival of new members to the Matekoni family, all brew up the most humorous and charmingly entertaining of tales. More of the same from Mma Ramotswe in the beautiful Botswana - such lovely books! The Glass Ceiling made me laugh. I now own numbers 1,2,4 & 6 in the series and am on the hunt for the rest so I can read the series in order.
  23. Just finished this book after starting it this morning. I loved it!! I have so much I want to say but has already been said on this thread, so I wont repeat. I loved both Esme and Iris, I thought Kitty was spineless but did understand that she just wanted to conform and not rock the boat. Loof ~ The red cord is an emergancy alarm - like they have in hospitals and on trains, yes to your second question. This book is haunting, suffice to say I am now on the hunt for more by Maggie O'Farrell. KX
