I see that you are reading The Palace of Heavenly Pleasure. I have that book on my TBR list. Sadly it keeps getting lower and lower down my priority list. I would be interested to know how you get on with that one.

I thought the same as you mrstrecool. I read Jane Eyre first and then read the Eyre Affair. I don

I have just finished this book. I liked Holden right from the beginning, but I could see he had serious problems, and yes he was extremely irritating at times. I really enjoyed reading this.
I will let it sink in and maybe we can talk some more.

Well now that I have managed to read all of The Shining I have to say that I was not as scared this time around. I suppose I had some idea about what to expect.
I felt that Jack had major problems in his life even before he got to the Hotel, so it is hardly surprising that the atmosphere at the hotel tipped him over the edge, until he did not know what was real and what was not.
I think that Stephen King built up that tension very well.
The Scene with the fire hose and room 217 are great, but for me it was the wasps that were the scariest things.

Sorry to be so late in getting started. I am only at page 18, but I want to find out more about Holden. Will post more when I get a bit further on.

I have now finished Frankenstein. For me the language was a bit of barrier and I also felt that the book dragged in places.
I did not like Victor very much. As previous posters have commented he seemed to take no responsibility for his creation. In many ways Victor seemed to be more of a monster than the

I would never turn down the corners of a book.
I have lots of bookmarks but tend to stick with just one for a long time. The one I am using at the moment is a bit tatty and the top is missing but it works well for me. It will probably need to disintegrate before I stop using it.
