  1. I think our tastes are refined as we get older, you really begin to understand what you enjoy and can more easily discern what is really good. When I was younger, I used to enjoy anything that had a story to lead me through; but now, I judge a book still on the story, but also on the writing, the characterisation, and the many other layers that makes a book not just good, but great. It's the same with movies for me too.

  7. I also get this feeling a lot - at the moment, I'm putting off reading the last volume of the Northern Lights trilogy as I'm enjoying it so much. I know that as soon as I start reading it I'll be finished in a week I love the whole universe that Pullman has created, it's amazing!

  10. I'm looking forward to the film too! ...I normally really get a lot out of reading books on this subject matter, but this one I really didn't enjoy so much... until I got to the end. If it had a different ending I don't think I would rate this book very highly at all, but it was so captivating that it made my lack of enjoyment elsewhere worthwhile. If that makes any sense!
  11. Johnny and I have just stumbled upon a fantastic italian restaurant in Wanstead - the food was delicious! I had Taglatelle Verdie with chicken, asparagas, tomato in a light creamy sauce with a Tomato and onion salad - delicious!! mmmmm

  16. LOL!!! lolololol!! ...that creates a wonderful image!!! xx
  17. The turd on the mantelpiece was hard to forget - it's one of the reasons why I find him difficult to recommend to other people!! - I've just finished the Sacred Art of Stealing and it was fantastic; in my eyes a perfect novel. I was completely amazed at the way it unfolded, so intelligent!
  18. Y the last man is fantastic!! I recommend this series to anyone with ears ..glad you enjoyed it O's Brian K Vaughan has also been writing for Lost and currently has a Marvel series out (aimed more at teenagers) called 'Runaways' - I'm really enjoying it
  19. I'm still waiting for my feb book too, and didn't get my March one *sobs* - really quite fancied the March one!
  20. Ha!!! So cool to stumble on this thread! ... I read Quite Ugly One Morning a couple of years ago and loved it! I don't know why though, I'd never thought of looking to see if the author had written anything else, I guess it felt quite stand alone to me. Then yesterday I popped into an Oxfam bookshop and found two books with similar covers to Quite Ugly and realised they were by the same guy! So I bought them, for 59p each I might add!! (Dalston Oxfam is a great find!). On my way home I started reading the Sacred art of stealing and am really enjoying it; the other book I picked up was 'all fun and games until somebody loses an eye'. I was trying to describe his work to a friend last night and I couldn't bring myself to recommend them; not because I don't think he is great (I loved Quite Ugly), but because a lot of the content is quite disturbingly gruesome - it's such dark comedy I imagine it isn't for everyone. I'm so pleased you love him Kell, it makes me feel better about enjoying him - if that makes sense!
  21. everyone should own a mini-chopper, it's the best kitchen gadget in the world!! chop chop chop everything in 30 seconds! No more trips to the freezer for Delia the lazy bum
  22. I had the quickest dinner as an experiment and it was lovely! (although I may now be stinky!) - I cooked two minute fresh tagliatelle verde whilst I chopped one tomato and one garlic clove (with some olive oil and a teeny bit of fresh chilli) in my little chopper - I tossed the pasta in a little unsalted butter then tossed in the tomato goop and ate it all up - yum!!!
  23. Maybe I didn't make it clear when I said religious division, what I meant was there needs to be more tolerance.
  24. Why would you have got odd looks? For reading a comic? ?
  25. The Crow sounds so cool! Love the film from years of old, gonna keep an eye out for it thanks Musie! I've recently read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, it was wonderful; another book that has given me an insight into things otherwise unknown. It's autobiographical of Marjane who grew up in Iran at the time of revolution and unrest, and discusses the war with Iraq. It obviously focusses on her personal journey, which I really enjoyed. I've also just read volume 4 of Marvel's Runaways by Brian K Vaughan (author of Y, the last man and some of Lost on tv!) - I'm really enjoying it, it is very much written for the young adult, but this makes it a nice light read to enjoy between books.
