Thanks Janet! That's definately it, and I'm sure it was a childrens tv show too! I really enjoyed it if memory serves! ..and the secret garden!
-
..it sounds a little like another book, where there is a house with a concrete back yard and a grandfather clock, when the clock strikes the child goes out to the back yard to find a massive garden and a different time.. (or was this a television show?!?!) What was it called?! The secret garden? or is that the one with the sick child and the walled garden? hmmmm....

It was a great review! I've had it on my 'things to read' list for the last few days ..I've only been dipping in to the 'easy' threads! I love the term 'delicious sourness' it sounds really appealing! I've never really been a big fan of Oz, but you've certainly turned my head to thinking I may pick up Wicked in the future! ..plus.....I hope you don't mind but I've emailed your review to Johnny as Wicked is something that he's interested in; he's recently read the other books. Thanks for a great review xx

Lol!! There are lots of medical type people on this forum.. I wonder if they have come across these types of injuries in their experiences!! Imagine the damage that Gone with the Wind could cause!!!

Hello mcolettel, welcome to the forum! It's true! They are easier to hold above your head, I'd forgotten that uncomfortable feeling as your arms begin to tire and wobble but you're just too settled to move!! They should make ceiling harnesses for books so that you can lay in bed and not have to suspend your arms.

I watched it today ..and in time honoured tradition.. the book is far superior! All of the characters looked wrong, no-one was as attractive as I'd imagined (particularly since one of the characters is really vain and values attractiveness above most other things), I think they could have spent some extra time finding sparkly people. The story also felt a lot more 'clunky', I know that this is probably because there is so much to fit in from the book that they had to chop stuff out, so it didn't have the gradual unfolding. I think there is a better movie to be made from this book! It also had plinky plonky music all the way through which really got to me! I just couldn't ignore it! Saying that though, the ending was nice, it takes you further than the book ending so you get a little sneaky peeky at what happens next, which I really liked.. it was a very 'movie' ending! All in all I would say, read the book people.. and watch the film only if it's on one lazy afternoon!

I'm reading this too!!! It's fantastic! The last edition I thought I was finally understanding what was going on, then it was left on a cliffhanger again!!! ...I'm going to re-read the whole lot and look for clues.. Let me know if you have any theories! ... I used to watch Asterix when I was young, have never read the books though, forgot they ever existed actually!! I love the dog!

Maus by Art Spiegelman

...I couldn't wait, so did lift the cover last night and read the first chapter, I really like it too. I like Mr Speiglemans accent! He's written it really well I think! Plus some of the touches in the pictures are good (don't want to say too much at this early stage!!). -

O wow!! Good hunting Bagpuss! ...not sure what I make of Dakota Fanning as Lily, she looks too young to me; maybe her picture is deceiving! -
You should see the film! I want to know how it compares to the book..

..not sure if I've done this or not! I'll do now anyway! Birthday: 4th August, same as the Queen Mum, (she always used to get a parade, I was always jealous!) Age: 29 (big one this year, not looking forward to it!) Starsign: Leo, think I'm more of a kitten than a lion though Single/Married/Other? Living with my Johnny Children? No Where do you live? Essex, just outside London, soon to be in London as have just sold the house - hurrah! Seeya dullsville! Do you work? Yup. I am a contract manager for a government department, looking after funding contracts to training providers (it's kinda difficult to explain - and is not as grand as it sounds!). I like it though as I get out and about to meetings and I get to stay in the office and play on the computer. Favourite author? Douglas Coupland, Neil Gaiman (although waning on this one ), ...lots really, can't think! Favourite book? Stardust, Neil Gaiman, wonderful fairystory How did you get here? Google searched for book clubs, et voila!

..thought I'd stick my Perfume movie post here (originally posted in the cinema thread), to catch the people that have read the book and seen the film, I'm quite interested in the crossovers. I'm not sure I want to read the book, knowing the harshness of the story (think I'm too delicate to read it!).. let me know what you thought of the movie!! ______________________________________________________ I went to see 'Perfume' last night (I think, or the night before!). I haven't read the book and knew a little of the story. What I had imagined the story was, was completely different to what was revealed, so it had me pretty well gripped for the whole 2 and a half hours! The scenery is spectacular; the landscapes and the scenes of France were incredibly beautiful. I loved the way the movie captured the smells (difficult to do I imagine!). The movie used disgusting images that were very dully lit, which worked really well for the horrible smells, they really did repulse you. There were alot of 'urghs' in the audience! The nice smells were encapsulated with beauty, succulent fabrics, very nice lighting and a sense of euphoria or lust. It was very well done! The worst part of the film for me was that the movie was set in France, yet some characters spoke with a cockney accent, or an ordinary 'british' accent or american...or...in the case of Dustin Hoffman, an american accent with a hint of france thrown into the odd word (which annoyed me even more!). I think it would have enhanced the film for me if it had remained true to being set in france, I would even have enjoyed it with subtitles!! The story was great though, a really original and interesting idea; and really quite tragic to my mind. I may have to have a search for a thread on Perfume when I'm more awake to discuss the ins and outs of it more (hopefully the film isn't too different from the book).

..an aside.. ...why don't random strangers buy me things from my amazon wish list? I'm sure that this is what it should be for, not just a holding camp for books before I can afford to buy them! *mental note* must find forum for generous rich people and start schmoozing -
It looks like I'll have to Northanger Abbey too! ...I hope I can find in the newer pretty reprints (I love those covers, so so pretty!)... ...I've just ordered the Persuasion film from Amazon rentals - yay!!! Can't wait for it to come now!! ..hurry up postman!!..

LOL!! I am an advertisers dream!! My boyf always laughs at me! ...I recently returned home from Debenhams with three of the worlds sharpest knives, four small knives, and two juicers.. I had been watching a promotions guy who convinced me I needed all this stuff! My boyf did the same knife 'tests' when I got home to show me that it was exactly the same as the knives we already had! I really was certain that I'd never seen a tomato cut so effortlessly! ...I should be supervised at all times... Sorry... way off topic!

Ahh!! It is it is!! I first saw it in 'Smiths, picked it up and was unable to put it down! I had to carry it like a new born child around the store until I'd convinced myself that I couldn't leave without it!!! *sigh*

Me too! Definately!! ...it only takes one writer to make a screenplay.. anyone? -- the title sometimes gets substituted in my head to become The Secret Life of Peas.. I'm thinking that maybe this story wouldn't quite be so interesting. The imagery of them squeezed into the cracks in the bedroom walls doesn't quite work for me either. (think it's past my bedtime) -
I know!! Talk about the worst seat in the office!! The sun was not shining on me the day the seats were arranged!!

I really enjoyed this book too, although I read it a while ago and can't remember too much ...oh to have a brain!... I remember the wall in the back garden though for the sister that felt too much; I thought it was a wonderful idea, it really resonated with me. When I close my eyes I can see the sisters kitchen and the little honey room out back where Lily slept (I can almost smell the honey!). Was the book quite descriptive, or am I better at recalling images rather than plot points? Bizarre! I can picture the whole house, the stream and everything, yet the plot is beyond my reach! ..sorry, I've moved away from the point to explore my own memories.. it's odd though!! -
Aw, thanks PDR!! I had a little bit of time out, trying to sort my head through lots of things at work and lots of personal things at home (some times life gets in the way!!) - all good now though! Phew! ...then! Had a lovely time skiing in the Alps over New Years (.. I say skiing which makes it sound so grand, but technically, I had two days falling on my bum as that was all I could afford, the rest of the time was spent enjoying the crisp mountain air!)...THEN... when we returned, the internet had decided to go on holiday! ..It is back now! ..But, I imagine I'll be a bit on and off for the next few months also.. we have put our house on the market and shall be homeless pretty soon (I hope!!). I'll never wander too far from the forum though, I like it here! Nobody minds if I waffle on about Take That and any other thing that pops into my head I wish I could log in more at work but I have the Head of the whole Department sitting right behind me!! Bah!!
