I'm reading the book at the moment so it seemed fitting. My son bought me the film on DVD for my birthday too but I'll have to wait until I've finished the book before I watch it.

  9. Stephen Fry. I know it would only be for companionship but I wouldn't care!
  10. You should go for it. It doesn't matter how long it takes. I'm going very slowly too (only done 4, or maybe 5, countries) but it's hopefully going to make me read things I wouldn't otherwise have picked up.
  11. Firmin: The Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife by Sam Savage Told entirely in Firmin's voice, a book about a rat that lives in a bookstore and learns to read might not seem like everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fabulous story of wanting to belong - it's sad in places and funny in places and Firmin is really endearing for a rat. The copy in the picture above (although I assume other versions will too) has the most gorgeous illustrations in it. 8/10
  12. I'm doing (very slowly!) an Olympic reading challenge - and I've yet to do NZ. I've looked at Owls do Cry (which appears to be out of print but is available second-hand on Amazon) and it sounds good so I'll add it to my wishlist. Thanks for the recommendation.
  13. I'm glad you enjoyed The Book Thief. It's a brilliant read and will go down as one of my favourites. I liked the quirky nature of it. I see you're reading People of the Books at the moment. I shall look forward to your thoughts on that one as I quite fancy reading it.
  14. Hi there. Just wanted to know that I removed a link from your post today as commercial links are not allowed. I have deleted subsequent posts with this advertising links in them so you may wish to post again without them.

  15. Finished This is not a Novel by Irish author Jennifer Johnston. Not the most exciting book in the world! Still, it was only 10p in a sale of ex-library paperbacks so at least I didn't waste too much money. 5/10. Am now about 50 pages or so into Firmin by Sam Savage.
  16. I've removed your 'Reading' book from your profile (under your avatar) as this board has younger members for whom the title is not suitable. Please do not put it back. Thanks.

  17. Oh, I'm glad you ended up 'enjoying' it. Your review is excellent and it certainly is a book that is though-provoking!
  18. I somehow suspect they'd manipulate the footage to make you look foolish if you did that! I think Kate is one to watch. James is sweet but I'm not sure he's got what it takes, although I don't think he's as stupid as they're showing him. Suralan must see *something* in Debra that the rest of us are missing! I think Howard could go fairly soon - he doesn't seem to do much.
  19. Finished Sweet Thames by Matthew Kneale today. Set during the Cholera epidemic of the 1840s, It tells the story of Joshua Jeavons who has plans to reform the sewage systems in London - and at the same time investigates the disappearance of his wife. The characters and story are loosely based on real people. Whilst I didn't enjoy it as much as Kneale's English Passengers, it was a great story. I find his characterisation excellent and he is superb at painting a really vivid picture of Victorian London, both of the upper classes and the slum dwellers who live in close proximity in the city. 7/10
  20. I thought you'd probably already have it. :)

I'm good thanks. How are things with you?

  21. I'm probably too late - you may already have seen this (and it's May!) but I saw this diary and immediately thought of you. :)

ETA: I can't post a link, but it's this without the space in the www bit!

  22. Gosh, I hate the thought that someone would judge me on the way I look. I think that's really sad.
  23. Yes I was pondering this earlier as I was having coffee with a friend who has a completely different relationship with her son than I do with mine (not that he's anything like Kevin, I hasten to add!) and wondering how she'd react to it. It's certainly a book that provokes thought - whether one 'enjoyed' it or not.
  24. I thought it was a great read, but I don't think the phrase 'love it' summed my feelings up. I seem to remember saying something along the lines that it was difficult to read but that it made me think of my relationship with my own children, which is thankfully nothing like Eva's.
