My husband can't stand Miranda!
There is just something about her that makes him absolutely bristle! She is FAB in Call the Midwife though - which is back this Sunday!
Happy reading 2013, Andrea.

They charge more if you reserve a book via phone?!
That is peculiar.
By the way, I find it curious that you guys have adult cards and apparently children cards, too. Over here we all have the same card, no matter what our age.
That's so brutal that they won't even guarantee that you'll get a copy eventually, and that they still charge a ludicrous amount of money! I'm astonished! Who would feel keen on placing an inter-library loan after finding out about the fees and rules?!
Hehe, bless your Mum, I would resort to something like that myself if I needed
I don't understand why it should cost more over the phone -and especially not when done in person! I think having child cards is to prevent under 18s from taking out DVDs that are not age appropriate.
I would never use the inter-library loan system for that reason - most books would cost far less than £8 to buy!
My Mum rocks!
Yes, we both then use the same LibrariesWest website and catalogue, but my local authority charges more than yours! I think that's why I can't find the charges on the website, I have to look at my local authority website instead.
There is a link on the Libraries West page - down at the bottom under useful resources that takes you to the relevant page.

That mouse has his book upside down. Silly mouse!

Where abouts is that? I have lived in Bucks, Essex and Cambs and never had to pay for a reservation. I thought it was free nationally.
I live in Bath and North East Somerset (formerly Avon, before that just Somerset!). The library catalogue that covers my library also covers Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset and South Gloucestershire. The 75p charge is only for books reserved online - if you try to do it via phone (or even in person!) it costs £1.50 for a book on an adult card!
It costs considerably more to use an inter-library loan:
You can also ask us to find some items from other libraries in the UK (this is known as an Inter-Library loan). There is an £8.00 search fee for this service, we cannot guarantee that the item you require will be found but the £8.00 charge will still apply.
My Mum lives in Wiltshire so occasionally she's taken a book out on her card for me if it's not been available in the areas covered by my own authority.

We have to pay for reservations in the UK too - it varies from county to county - in our county it costs 75p (€0.89 / $1.20) to reserve an adult book and 50p (€0.60 / $0.80) for a children's book.

Why will Raven scoff at this?

Did they say why they declined you? Outrageous!

I like the highlight function on the Kindle.
With paper books I usually put a tiny slip of paper in a page when I want to remember something. If it's a book club book then I might mark certain passages, but only ever in pencil.

Oh dear - I wish I hadn't read that - I've just started that this morning!
Still, I guess I've got something to look forward to!

My copy arrived a couple of days ago - and I'll be starting on it soon. We'll turn for the reading circle, don't you worry Janet
Aww bless you - thanks.

Well done!

Play.com are only going to be doing second-hand from now on - I wonder if they'll survive?
-
Aww, bless him!

That is a beautiful cover.

Hurrah!
I was getting a bit worried that only Laura had mentioned it (that I've seen!). Thanks, Laura.

Mine is Iago from Shakespeare's Othello. He's so deliciously bad!

I think I am about to abandon my first book of 2013 - I Do Not Come To You By Chance by Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani. I've read the first 50 or so pages but it's just not doing it for me. Such a shame as it would have been my 'Nigeria' book. Ah well.

Thank you very much girls for sending me such lovely things xx (I am reading your book at the moment Janet and am loving it .. it's making me think that having a kitten again would be lovely .. hope I snap out of it by the end of the book
)
Aww, I'm glad you're enjoying it. It just sounded like you and your kind of book!
Aww, get a kitten!

A Fine Balance is a great book - so colourful and vibrant.
I agree about A Month in the Country, although isn't that already classed as a Modern Classic?
-
They're amazing. Beautiful.

It was your review that made me pick it up Janet otherwise it would have been languishing on the shelf for quite awhile
I'm so pleased you enjoyed it.
It was such a colourful read, wasn't it.
-
Hope you enjoy it Janet!
Thank you!
Thanks to Janet who's review made me get this down off the shelf where it was gathering dust.
Oooooo - I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Ooh, not quite that bad, I meant 400 books not 400 pages!
It's over 400 books spread across 20 wishlists
Ah right - that makes more sense!

Gosh, I've downloaded loads to my Kindle! Definitely some more Austen (I've only read Pride and Prejudice so far), some Dickens (starting with The Pickwick Papers which I believe was his first?), Lorna Doone (a children's book, I think? But anyway, now classed as a classic as far as I know), Treasure Island, Fanny Hill, some more Hardy...
All pretty mainstream stuff really.
I hadn't really read any classics until a few years ago and I've only read a few. I loved P&P (it took me a while to get going with it), I loved The Mayor of Casterbridge. I loved The War of the Worlds. I really enjoyed Candide! Gulliver's Travels less so. A Christmas Carol, of course (not your favourite, I know!), Jane Eyre was really good...
I wish I'd been more adventurous years ago!

It's worth contacting Amazon about it - I've heard instances of them replacing Kindles when they're only just out of guarantee as a gesture of goodwill. It's worth asking.
