  1. 181 days until Christmas!

  2. I read Burning Bright a few years ago - because it featured the poet William Blake. I loved the descriptions of London but I found it rather lacked in substance and it annoyed me a bit where the author kept repeating the name of the village someone originally hailed from - like she thought we wouldn't be able to remember it for ourselves - it grated. It kind of put me off trying anything else by her (I didn't enjoy the film of Girl with a Pearl Earring), sadly.
  3. I think a few of us downloaded it when it was Amazon's Kindle deal. I haven't read it yet.
  4. I won't - although I think I also had unrealistic expectations following A Thousand Splendid Suns! Thanks, Alex.
  5. Uh-oh - that doesn't bode well!
  6. I think your assumption that it's a printed signature is probably the right one. Even though you can see it through the page - that's possibly just to do with printing and paper quality of the time. If you Google "Thomas Hood signature" in Google images, the first three results are the same as yours - this one shows it from a 1906 edition and to me it looks absolutely identical. The only real way to find out for sure is to take it to an antiquarian book dealer and ask their advice - they might be able to tell you straight away, or point you in the right direction. I would say it was impossible to verify its authenticity - or otherwise - from a computer screen.
  7. Ah, but note my careful wording - I said list, not thread!
  8. My list, my rules!
  9. I only put Kindle books on my list if I've paid for them!
  10. Cheater!!
  11. A great haul, Kidsmum. I read Silas Marner a couple of years ago and I loved it.
  12. Thanks, Julie. I like that you can turn the light off.
  13. A silly question about the Kindle White. Is it lit up all the time, or can you switch it on and off? I really like reading on my Kindle and whilst I like the idea of it being lit up at times, I wouldn't want it on all the time.
  14. £6.99 on Kindle is tempting! I hope you enjoy it. Thanks, frankie. I've read a wee bit more now - I'm just about to start chapter 8!
  15. I read the three Flowers in the Attic books when I was a teenager, and remember loving them at the time. I think I might also have tried the one Nicola mentioned above - My Sweet Audrina - as the title rings a bell. I haven't read any others though and I don't think they'd be 'my thing' any more.
  16. I really want to read this, but I don't like hardbacks so I fear I'll have to wait for the paperback. I hope you enjoy it.
  17. I'm reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen Well, I say reading, but I haven't actually had time to pick it up since Monday and I've only managed the first chapter! I'm hoping next week might be slightly quieter!
  18. Proust is an author who makes me feel a little intimidated. I think Remembrance of Things Past is pretty long too, isn't it? It would definitely be a Kindle one for me if I ever decided to tackle it, I think. I can't help but think of Monty Python whenever anyone mentions Proust!
  19. Hi Lydia. We have a thread in the General Book Discussions board right at the top of the forum in which people post what they're currently reading. It changes monthly and you'll find the current thread here. Why don't you tell us a bit more about this book? Like who the author is, and what it is that you're enjoying so much about it. And maybe the 'blurb' from the back fo the book. According to Amazon there are several books with this title and I can't work out which is the Young Adult one.
  20. Look who's playing Lady Catherine De Bourgh!
  21. I'm sorry I missed your post, Kidsmum. I do hope you enjoy Oliver Twist when you get round to it. I've finished two 'challenge' books since I last posted. Yesterday I finished Scenes from Village Life by Amos Oz, which was for Israel. I enjoyed it but am struggling at the moment to write a review for it. Today I read The BFG by Roald Dahl for my Dahl challenge. I have 9 books left for that challenge (which does not include his titles for adults). Thoughts on this to follow at some stage too. I don't know what to try next. I want to read an Austen (I've only read Pride and Prejudice) - I might try Mansfield Park?
  22. I saw this and thought of you! I don't know what it's like, but it's free on Kindle at the moment and has 27 5* reviews (and only one 2* review, no 1*) - and it's about dogs - so I thought I'd link it just in case you haven't got enough books to read!
  23. I expect you know already, but Jessie Keane has other books available too.
  24. Oh yes - I looked at that one yesterday and umhed and ahed about whether to download it or not and didn't come to any conclusion - then promptly forgot! He's just won a significant prize for a different book (I can't remember what it's called but it has a red cover! ). I guess for 99p I should take a punt - thanks for the reminder. I think I had some kind of detective book on my wish list for Malaysia (a detective Singh mystery, maybe).
  25. I've done the others, but just out of interest, what do you have for Malaysia?
