  1. We have told her that, that there are loads more she could try, but I don't think they're her kind of book, to be honest. She doesn't like sc-fi or fantasy books that have magic in them. She doesn't really like the idea that the world in on the back of a turtle. She's not really willing to give any more of them a go, I'm afraid. (Although I have to say that I enjoyed the first two books and Eric.)
  2. I think I will definitely be having a go at another one of her books.
  3. My sister and I are fans of the Discworld series and my mother has decided to give the first one - The Colour of Magic - a go. I don't think she likes it much, though, but she's determined to finish it so she can say she has read one.
  4. I like the City Watch from Discworld as well. I also really like Rincewind and the Wizards. There are a few crime fiction characters that I like - Morse and Lewis from Inspector Morse and Poirot.
  5. I am just starting chapter 15 and I am really enjoying Rebecca so far. I love some of the descriptions in it. It's one of those books that I keep finding hard to put down - I keep wanting to read the next chapter! I have seen Rebecca's Tale. I haven't heard much about it, though. I take it you've read it, Lilywhite? Is it any good?
  6. Looks like I've got some good reads to have a go at, then. Thanks, Gyre.
  7. Went to a second-hand bookshop this afternoon. They had a half price sale on all their books, so it would have been a waste not to take them up on this offer (that's my excuse, anyway ). Ended up coming away with a lovely old hardback of Sherlock Holmes - a great read and it looks lovely on the shelf. Also got a Hemingway, a few by Patricia Highsmith, a George Orwell and a few others. A rather good shopping trip, methinks. But it also means that the TBR mountain has just grown.
  8. Last one I bought was Beyond The Fringe on Broadway.
  9. I've now started my schoolwork and coursework again, so Rebecca is going to have to be put aside for a little while. I might have a read of it in the evenings, but it will probably be quite a while before I finish it.
  10. I am going to now move on to one of the classics...... Rebecca Daphne du Maurier Working as a lady's companion, the heroine of Rebecca learns her place. Her future looks bleak until, on a trip to the South of France, she meets Max de Winter, a handsome widower whose sudden proposal of marriage takes her by surprise. She accepts, but whisked from glamorous Monte Carlo to the ominous and brooding Manderley, the new Mrs de Winter finds Max a changed man.
  11. Managed to finish off the last few chapters of the first Morse book. Enjoyed this one very much. I'm now looking forward to reading all of the 13 books in the Inspector Morse series.
  12. The enchantment was no more, the spell was broken. We were mortal again, two people playing on a beach. We threw more stones, went to the water's edge, flung ducks and drakes, and fished for driftwood. Rebecca Daphne du Maurier
  13. See, Michelle - these are the real questions we want answers to.
  14. I'm like that with things sometimes. I have a lovely pen my nan gave me a few years ago - it's still in its case. I'm like that with mugs, as well. If they look pretty then they go on the bookshelf to be looked at and to gather dust.

Don't worry. I never blame anyone when it comes to books.

They all look to be quite good. I'll have to give Sleepyhead a go. Thanks, ~V~.
  17. For the past few days, I've found myself getting caught up with people and things, so I haven't been able to do much (if any) reading at all. But I'm really enjoying the first Morse book - It's only a short book at just over 300 pages. I just about get settled down and open the book, when something comes along and I have to leave it at that. Does no one realise that I'm trying to find out who killed Sylvia?
  18. I think I'll definitely be having a go at The Historian when my sister has finished with it.

I have Sleepyhead waiting on the shelf. I think that is his first one.......am I right? I only bought it because I remembered him as Gary from Maid Marian.
  20. I use a yellow Post-It note with the sticky bit folded and stuck down so it doesn't spoil the pages. I've been using it for the past two years or more.
  21. See, now, I really enjoyed reading those three. I haven't read all the Discworld books yet, but the one I didn't like was Pyramids. I couldn't seem to get into that one at all. It just goes to show that some of the Discworld books are better for certain people than they are for others.
  22. I have to say that that is a top idea! My mind always goes blank when I'm out looking for books. There are just so many of them staring out at you from the shelves that I completely lose what I'm looking for.
  23. No, I don't want to read them all at once either. I'd end up getting fed up with them and it would spoil them a bit.
  24. "Let us guess at the age of our murderer. I put him - I am diffident, and you will accuse me of formulating sub-hypotheses - between 35 and 50. Yes, there are reasons..." LAST BUS TO WOODSTOCK Colin Dexter
