    My Town

There are several of us immigrant Sassenachs on the forum, Pennan - i'm one & Purple Poppy is another - both of us originally from just South of the Border, but now living well above it - LOL!
  2. Yes, I bookcross, though only with the books I swap - I automatically go along & register them before posting. Of course, I don't do that if I'm selling them... I've managed to catch a couple of travelling books too - that's how I found my way to the book crossing site inthe first place. It's a great way to keep track of where your books end up (providning that the recipients actually do register that they've caught them on the site) - all over the world!
  3. Glad to know I turned someone onto Colapinto - he was definitely my personal "best discovery" of the year. i've not yet got any moreo f his books, but I will certainly be doing so as soon as I'm allowed to get any more! Also wanted to add that i rather liked Life of Pi too. my sister, who doesn't read, recommended it to me & I just gobbled it up. I loved the whole story-telling ethos of the narrator blending fact & fiction. Great stuff.
  4. I just LOVE how you put that! I'm going to have to give this one a try too now - you guys are going to bankrupt me in no time at all! off to add this to my wish-list...
  5. I also loved About the Author - I'll certainly be looking out for other books by Colapinto.
  6. Glad you enjoyed it. I'll be interested in hearing what you think of the other 3 on offer there too.
  7. There are a few on your list I've read & several I wantto read too, so I'll be waiting to hear what you think of them...
  8. I agree with Maureen - I enjoyed it a lot, but there were others I enjoyed more.
  9. I seem to remember someone once saying that authors often try to find a surname that will be shelved at eye-level, as they're more likely to be picked up on a whim. Personally, I find I'm often drawn to books right beside those by my favourite authors. For instance, if i'm looking to see if a new Simon Scarrow book is out, there'll be another one somewhere in the "s" section that grabs my attention. When I'm just borwsing, I still tend to gravitate towards the areas where I know my favourite authors are shelved - the horror section where Kelley Armstrong & Charlaine Harris sits; the crime section next to Stuart McBride; the sci-fi/fantasy shelves next to Terry Pratchett. After that, it's the general fiction shelves around Scarrow & Brookmyre. I also often pick up new authors when their books are displayed on a table especially if the table is themed, such as historical fiction...
  10. Good to see you again - & good to know that the newsletters have been keeping you informed too.
  11. I would - if only so I could then rub his chest better & then, do it again to kiss him better. Oh yum!
  12. Me too. I rather like Cptn Jack in it too.
  13. Nooooooo! You mustn't ban yoursel!:lol:I know what you mean, though - often I'll plan some nice reading time to myself, then get caught up on the board & before I know it, it's bed time! If I weren't a member here, I'd probably get a LOT more reading done, but I don't think I'd have half so much fun with it!
  14. I hope you enjoy it, PP. It's only about 1/2 an hour long that one, but it's punchy & Burn reads it well.
  15. I've read about a dozen of your TBRs - I guess we have some similarities in taste (not that we didn't already know that - LOL!). You've got some really good reading to look forward to there.
  16. It was The Debt by Simon Kernick, which I downloaded free from BMW. I personally thought it was the best of the four on there, even if it was the shortest one!
  17. Good to have you back! I've just had a look at Snow Flower & the Secret Fan on Amazon & it looks really interesting - I shall add it to my wish list right away!

    Why?

Mine's more of a memory aid for when I come to write my reviews, because I don't alweays write them right away, but like to have a bit of a think about things, by which time I may have read several more books. It helps keep things straight in my head if I can look back & say, "yes, that was the one where...", especially if I'm reading several books from the same series - they can run into each other a bit. It also means that if I can't remember who wrote a specific book off the top of my head, I can look back & remind myself - I'm pretty useless when it comes to remembering foreign names - LOL!
  19. Yes, and I woke up with a big, pink dent in my face that was rather uncomfortable - LOL!
  20. If you're unlucky and don't like the narrator's voice, it can be really off-putting. one of the short stories I downloaded from BMW (the Karin Slaughter one), wasn't a brilliant story enyway, but it would have helped if the reader had actually had any life in her voice - it was completely flat & drawling, so I felt bored throughout. Whereas, the one that was narrated by the guy who plays Owen in Torchwood, and the one read by one of the guys who was in The High Life, were both great to listen to - very expressive - & I got a lot more out of them. It helped that the stories were better too though...
  21. We only have the 1st part, PDR, but you're right, he does a pretty good impression of Rose too!
  22. I never went to a boarding school, so I couldn't say from personal experience. I don't think I even know anyone who went to boarding school. If I were to go by the Enid Blyton stories I read when I was very young, all-girl schools are all jolly-hockey-sticks, midnight feasts, and having a jolly-whizzy time together, but I've never read anything other than G&P set at an all-boys school...
  23. PART FIVE PS replied to PP via PM.
  24. I plan on doing the exact same thing. I managed to get the adult hardback of Half Blood Prince & want to get them all like that so they match - LOL!
  25. I have a couple of those on my own list too, so I'll be interested in hearing what you think of them when you read them. I can also recommend Bitten Kelly Armstrong is one of my favourite authors & I love the entire Women of the Otherworld series.
