SOunds like she's a very intersting person. I might have to pick up House of Spirits - I think that's the one I've heard of most often.
-
Apparently there's a whole genre that's now called "Lad Lit" (or sometimes D*ck Lit - LOL!). I've recently read I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan which is, apparently, classed as Lad Lit & I loved it... & btw, i'm a female - LOL!
I think that these books have a wide appeal - they're easy to pick up & get into & usually filled with characters to whom we can easily relate which makes them all the more engaging. They're often humorous, which is very attractive in a light read, & although some of them have a "deeper" meaning, you don't have to tax your brain in order to get whatever it is the author's trying to say.

I know what you mean about Magrat. I agree completely with Granny Weatherwax when she says magrat is a "wet hen" - LOL! It's been so long since the Witches had a real story that I fear Terry's forgotten them. Perhaps he'll bring them back into something in the near future - I'd like to see how they've progressed. The only character I think I'm not all that bothered about seeing more of is, sadly, Rincewind, which is odd, because I do like his character a lot, it's just there's only so much of his running away I can handle - LOL!
Have you read Thud! yet?
-
Oh dear... I've picked it up a couple of times, but not opened it yet - there are just so many other books I want to read first!
-
No need to, Knitnurse - you did just fine there & who's to say anyone's any cleverer than you anyway?
-
I've got Salem Falls waiting to be read, but so far, MSK is the only one of Piccoult's I've read.
-
I don't need an extra excuse to buy my Dad presents - I may get him it anyway.
Althought I do kinda wish I'd heard of it before the weekend - LOL!
-
I might just do that then, Philip - thanks for the recommendation.

My Dad used to work in Mountain Rescue & I'm now wondering if this might be an idea for him...
-
This sounds like a very interesting idea - i like the sound of the style - very unusual.
-
And another one to look out for - I can see I'm going to be spending a fortune this summer!
-
Another author that's new to me to be checked out.
i always love hearing about different authors - it gives me ideas...
-
I've seen this one about & heard mixed reviews, but seeing yours, I think I'll give it a miss - it doesn't sound like my cup of tea at all.
-
Glad to hear yuo enjoyed it so much, Samantha.
-
I read Undomestic Goddess recently & really enjoyed it. It's a nice light read - easy to kick back & relax with.
-
I managed to come home with three books to add to my to read list:
Broken by Kelley Armstrong (bought)
If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor (kindly lent to me by Purple Poppy)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Berniere (swapped on RISI - I had to pick it up from the post office depot)
-
I know exactly what you mean, Kat - it was maddening having to put the book down after my coffee or lunch break & go back to work whilst torturing myself over what was going to happen next!
Michelle - you've got some great stuff coming up very, very soon!
-
Enjoy your new haul of books, Tiger. I especially hope you enjoy The Twits - it's one of my all-time favourites!
-
I think they're really aimed at perhaps 10 & over (& the range could go right up really), but if you've got a 7 or 8 year old who's a particularly avid reader, I reckon they'd be more than happy too. I think they're aimed at the same market range as Harry Potter. I certainly enjoyed them & was thinking I might get them for my niece this Xmas asshe'll be almost 9 by then.
-
Well, I estimate I've got maybe a half-dozen chapters to read, which means I'll be done this weekend (possibly even tonight if i get a good run at it!). I'm looking forward to seeing how it all ends. How far as everyone else got with it? Anyone care to share their thoughts on it at all?

I have to admit that if I were ever to return to acting, it would be so that I could play Captain Holly Short of the LEP-Recon - LOL!
-
BTW, Kat - congratulations on the 10 months & 6 days of being cigarette-free - I know it can be tough, but it's worth it - well done!
-
Hope you enjoy the Darren Shan stuff, Kat!
I've failed coompletely to find any nice, big chunks of time to read the Historian properly, so every time I pick it up I have a humourous "what the h*ll is going on?" moment while I try to figure out who's narrating that bit of the story - LOL! Still, I'm managing to really enjoy it, despite taking forever to read it, so that's good. Several of my colleagues have been asking me about it, so it's become quite the coffee-break topic of conversation (althoguh I only found this out by chance as I sit alone & read rather than joining them - LOL!) & am lending it to one of my nicest colleagues when I'm done. I think he may well enjoy it too...

Cous-cous with roasted veg & pine nuts is always a nice accompanyment to any salads you decide to serve & it can be prepared the night before & then chilled so it's ready to serve on the day.

I once heard a story about a theif breaking into a book shop. They didn't steal anything except 2 copies of each of Terry Pratchett's books. Not one, but TWO complete sets. The way Terry tells it, he takes it as a huge compliment - LOL!
