  1. I once heard a story about a theif breaking into a book shop. They didn't steal anything except 2 copies of each of Terry Pratchett's books. Not one, but TWO complete sets. The way Terry tells it, he takes it as a huge compliment - LOL!

  2. Apparently there's a whole genre that's now called "Lad Lit" (or sometimes D*ck Lit - LOL!). I've recently read I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan which is, apparently, classed as Lad Lit & I loved it... & btw, i'm a female - LOL! :D I think that these books have a wide appeal - they're easy to pick up & get into & usually filled with characters to whom we can easily relate which makes them all the more engaging. They're often humorous, which is very attractive in a light read, & although some of them have a "deeper" meaning, you don't have to tax your brain in order to get whatever it is the author's trying to say.

  3. I know what you mean about Magrat. I agree completely with Granny Weatherwax when she says magrat is a "wet hen" - LOL! It's been so long since the Witches had a real story that I fear Terry's forgotten them. Perhaps he'll bring them back into something in the near future - I'd like to see how they've progressed. The only character I think I'm not all that bothered about seeing more of is, sadly, Rincewind, which is odd, because I do like his character a lot, it's just there's only so much of his running away I can handle - LOL!

    Have you read Thud! yet?

  4. I managed to come home with three books to add to my to read list:

    Broken by Kelley Armstrong (bought)

If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor (kindly lent to me by Purple Poppy)

Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Berniere (swapped on RISI - I had to pick it up from the post office depot)

  5. I think they're really aimed at perhaps 10 & over (& the range could go right up really), but if you've got a 7 or 8 year old who's a particularly avid reader, I reckon they'd be more than happy too. I think they're aimed at the same market range as Harry Potter. I certainly enjoyed them & was thinking I might get them for my niece this Xmas asshe'll be almost 9 by then.

  6. Well, I estimate I've got maybe a half-dozen chapters to read, which means I'll be done this weekend (possibly even tonight if i get a good run at it!). I'm looking forward to seeing how it all ends. How far as everyone else got with it? Anyone care to share their thoughts on it at all?

  7. Hope you enjoy the Darren Shan stuff, Kat!

I've failed coompletely to find any nice, big chunks of time to read the Historian properly, so every time I pick it up I have a humourous "what the h*ll is going on?" moment while I try to figure out who's narrating that bit of the story - LOL! Still, I'm managing to really enjoy it, despite taking forever to read it, so that's good. Several of my colleagues have been asking me about it, so it's become quite the coffee-break topic of conversation (althoguh I only found this out by chance as I sit alone & read rather than joining them - LOL!) & am lending it to one of my nicest colleagues when I'm done. I think he may well enjoy it too...
