ooh, yes - also known as a Cockatrice, if I remember correctly...

I'm still reading Lolita (I'm taking my time with it) & have just finished Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation which was a funny, light read which has succeeded in making me even more paranoid about my typos on the forum! I'll also admit that, when faces with a badly punctuated notice, I feel compelled to correct it (oh, no! I'm a stickler!). On top of that, i noticed a couple of grammatical errors which I am prepared to overlook, seeing as it's about punctuation, rather than grammar (& since it made me feel all smart to notice them).

I had a copy of Magical Worlds a while back - I really enjoyed it. It only went up to Book 5, though, & I suspect they'll release an updated version some time after boko 7 is published...

I think that at one, if not both, will be major characters - possibly Hagrid or Hermione (Oh, I hope I'm wrong!), but I think that one will most likely be Voldemort himself...
Ooh, crikey, I hope Neville Longbottom doesn't die! I have a feeling he'll play quite an important part in this final book, as he's the other boy who could have been the "chosen one". He's been underestimated by all & has played small but crucial roles at almost every step, so I think he's rather important.

in that case, even more wow! I was gong by what it said in the aothor bio at the front of the book, which said 2nd, but also mentioned that his family had moved to London from Russia, then to Germany, before he left for America with his wife & son, so it certainly looks like he would have German under his belt too. What an amazing man! I only have school-girl French & a mostly-forgotten smattering of Turkish to my name - LOL!

You should call them, anonymously, & ask what the fine would be for that length of time...

Aaarrrgghhhh!!!!! And I love salmon, too, but I couldn't have been in the same room with it - LOL!

Well, after getting slightly wary looks yesterday while reading How to Kill Your Husband, I got more funny looks today while reading Lolita. Apparently, round our way, people think it's a bit smutty*. I wonder how many of them have actually read it - LOL! I'm about a dozen chapters in & really enjoying it. It's amazing to me that someone can not only write so eloquently, but to do it in a language not their own (English is Nabokov's 2nd language, but you'd never know to read Lolita). It's rather more absorbing than the film was (much as I enjoyed that).
* One colleague mentioned it along the lines of "Isn't that right up there with Lady Chatterley's Lover?". Of course, now I'm going to have to read that too - LOL!

I'm the same about heads, Sarah - I once had to leave an entire meal because the fish (which was a perfectly lovely red snapper, if I remember correctly) arrived with it's head still on & I could feel it staring at me. I couldn't eat it even once my mother had removed the head, because it had arrived with it on & had put me right off it - I nibbled on a salad that lunchtime instead.

I used to go to the library about every other day when Dale & I were in our 1st flat, as there was a branch on the corner of our street. I was in there so often that the librarians knew the kind of thing I liked & since they knew I'd be in within a coupole of days, they used to keep things to one side for me if they thought I'd be interested.
I still go occasionally now, but I haven't been in a couple of months as I have so many unread books on my own shelves that I wasnt to get into. Our main library's not bad at all, but it always seems like the books I specifically want are never there & would have to be ordered in - which costs money every time, so I'd end up spending loads of money all the time - LOL! There's a branch just slightly out of my way on my route home from work, which is rather handy too..

The basic premise is it's an older man with a much younger girl. It's been made into a movie (twice, I think) - I saw the one with Jeremy Irons in a few years back. It's generally regarded as a modern classic & I've been meaning to read it for years, but I've been seeing it around so much lately that I thought "what the hell? Now's as good a time as any!". I'm only a few chapters in & so far so good.
The synopsis on Amazon is incredibly brief:
Humbert Humbert is a middle-aged, fastidious college professor. He also likes little girls. And none more so than Lolita, who he'll do anything to possess. Is he in love or insane, a silver-tongued poet or a pervert, a tortured soul or a monster or is he all of these! -
Finished The Wicker Man (thoroughly enjoyed it too!), moved onto How to Kill Your Husband (& Other Handy household Hints) which had be cackling evilly throughout, & have now started Lolita - I've been meaning to read it for years & my copy (acquired via RISI) arrived today.

I've been thinking of getting this one & The Fingersmith for a little while now...

Has "anyone" read any of the books on my list or am I a misfit.
I've read all Pratchett's books - I'm a huge fan of his. I've also read a couple of Steinbecks, but not the ones on your list - LOL!

...and I don't eat insects.
No, me either. Insects, whether alive or dead, are completely out for me - ick!
I'd very much like to try snake though - I've been told that's delicious.
-
I like to try new things - quite often I find new favourites that way & end up trying to get recipes from the various resteraunts - LOL! Kofte (Turkish meatballs) are still a favourite of mine, along with borek (filo pastry stuffed with feta & baked - yummy!) & baklava (layred pastry, honey & nuts - sinfully delicious!). I was shown how to make them when I was over in Turkey a few years back.
I'll try pretty much anything unless it's shellfish or squid/octopus, because I really don't like the texture of those at all. *shudder*

I've only read Chocolat (I coudn't get into Blackberry Wine at all), but this one sounds a bit different...
-
Now I'm going to have to get hold of this one - it sounds like it's right up my street!

Years ago, when I did telephone sales, everyone would purposely save all the odd names for me as I seemed to have a knack for pronouncing them in a way that was at least approaching the right way - it was always pages of Oriental, Arabic & Nordic names & could be a lot of fun - it was a nice opener, the whole "ooh, what an unusual name - isn't that lovely?" thing - LOL!
-
ooh, yes, i've heard Cold Granite is good.

That's an excellent site, MC - I've got a basc Microsoft Access database on my own computer, but I think I rather like this setup!

I know absolutely nothing about wine, but a friend of mine did a wine tasting course a few years back & really enjoyed it. Now, whenever he visits, he brings a really nice bottle each of red, white & rose (I can't drink red, but I like the other 2) to try.

Now reading the novelisation of The Wicker Man which is proving very interesting reading as it's already filling in a lot of gaps left by the film (which I loved). I'm getting to see the reasons behind Howie's way of thinking more than was shown on the screen & feeling a little more sympathetic towards his character. I'monly about 1/3rd of the way in, but it's good reading so far & very easy to get into - the writing is really drawing me in (one of the writers also wrote the screenplay).
-
This one does seem to be a "love or hate" novel as I've seen very mixed reviews of it, but they all seem to be extreme one way or the other. It's certainly one that encourages discussion though!

Maybe Harry isn't the Chosen One after all - maybe he'll die killing Voldemort & it'll turn out that Neville was The One all along - LOL!
I'm pretty certain that Voldemort will have to get it in the end - the whole triumph-over-evil thing & all...
