  1. I'll be interested to know what you think of it!
  2. I still struggle through, no matter what. I guess I'm a bit of a masochist. There haven't been many clunkers this year, though, fortunately. I'm a third of the way through Jerusalem Inn, and am having fun with it. It's a slow burn mystery; no idea where it's headed yet. Congrats on your exam success, @More reading time required !
  3. I've just finished A Christmas Malice. The festive atmosphere and the characters were great; the punctuation, not so much. It needed more commas. Still, for a self-published work it was a fine read. I'm just about to start Jerusalem Inn by Martha Grimes; the last of my Christmas-themed reads for the year.
  4. It's December already! What's everyone reading? I'll be finishing Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery later today. A very intriguing mystery. I've no idea whodunnit. Next up is A Christmas Malice by John Bainbridge. I've not read anything by this author before.
  5. My decorations go up today! Anyone else's too? The gift wrapping gets done tomorrow. I've still the housework to do before any of that, though, and then the dust will have a full month to collect between all of the tinsel and string lights... Now I can legitimately start watching Christmas films and listening to music without feeling odd about it.
  6. Just this minute finished Stoner. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The second half is far superior to the first. 4/5 Am now about to start The Sittaford Mystery by Agatha Christie, which seems suitably snowy and wintery and murdery for this time of the year.
  7. I'm almost finished with Stoner. The first half was good, but a little flat. Stoner himself is so PASSIVE! He is a gentleman to whom life simply happens. His wife treats him like doo-doo. He is unable to speak up for his daughter. The daughter suffers. He is a bit of a limp lettuce in general. And then -- the second half of the book. Suddenly, he grows a backbone. Part of one, at any rate. He's still completely useless where his wife and daughter are concerned. But this second half is gripping, in a restrained sort of way. It won't end happily, I know that much. Up next: my Christmas/December reading! Woot!
  8. I've just finished playing The Room Three, which is a room escape/puzzle game available on Steam for PC. I've played all three games in the series so far, and this is the best one -- although they're all pretty fantastic. The graphics are simply superb. These are and will be games that I'll return to over and over, because they're so much FUN! Highly recommended, if you enjoy puzzles.
  9. Yes, it gets a bit wearing. Christie's possible racism is a whole other barrel of bananas! She's made my jaw drop more than once on the subject of "foreigners" in both narration and character dialogue. She may not have even thought twice about it.
  10. Same-old, same-old, this side. The gift shopping's mostly done. Just need to pick up a couple of bottles of liqueur/brandy, and that's that. The decorations will go up at the beginning of December. My menu this year will be identical to last year: a veggie meatball feast on Christmas Eve, and my special fancy veggie nut roast with all the trimmings on Christmas Day. I'll probably be baking a chocolate cake at some point. Nothing innovative, but it's all tasty!
  11. I finished Murder is Easy. 3/5, not a bad yarn. I'm just about to begin Stoner by John Williams. I've heard so many good things about this novel. If it doesn't change my life, I want a refund!
  12. I'm looking forward to reading these for the first time: The Sittaford Mystery by Agatha Christie A Christmas Malice by John Bainbridge Jerusalem Inn by Martha Grimes
  13. Wobbling at 21. Should be closer to 30 by the end of the year.
  14. I've just 30 pages left of Murder is Easy by Agatha Christie. I'm enjoying the story, but NOT AC's apparent homophobia. It makes me want to tweak her nose and put runs in her tights. No idea what I'm going to read next, but I have a few good things lined up for December.
  15. Good news, thanks Hayley!
  16. Madeleine, the moderator who emailed you says that the email bounced back to them with the error message "address not found".
  17. My email came straight through, Madeleine. Have you checked your spam folder?
  18. I also like the look of Book Group Online. I think I might join that one.
  19. Same here, actually!
  20. I'm sad too. I don't use Facebook. Thanks to admin and mods for all their hard work over the years. It's been fun. Goodbye, everyone!
  21. We're in July already! What's everyone currently reading? I've just finished Unfinished Business by James Van Praagh. It was fascinating, and gave me a lot to think about. I'm now carrying on with Rupert Everett's autobiography, Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins. It's v. entertaining, and has made me snort aloud a few times.
  22. I empathise, Booknutt! Getting the balance right can be a song and dance. Here's a link that might help you: https://heartuk.org.uk/cholesterol-and-diet/low-cholesterol-diets-and-foods I'd also recommend tracking your daily food intake through a web app such as Cronometer. It keeps a record of your vitamin, mineral and other nutrient levels, so you know what you're eating too much of, or the other way about. It's helped me enormously as I navigate a vegan diet. https://cronometer.com/ Good luck!
  23. Orlando by Virginia Woolf Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf Endless Night by Agatha Christie Testimony of Light by Helen Greaves 2018 has been a great reading year for me so far.
  24. Really enjoying Unfinished Business; I'm a third of the way through it. The subject of the afterlife fascinates me. I'm about to start Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins by Rupert Everett. I watched a BBC documentary on him recently, and was so charmed by his wit and candour. It reminded me that I had this book sitting unread on my shelf, and gave me a virtual dig in the ribs that I NEED to read it!
  25. I finally finished Rogue Male. The latter third (in the tiny earth-hole) felt so claustrophobic that I was almost gasping for air along with the protagonist! Physically uncomfortable reading. The ending had a small twist that I wasn't expecting. 4/5 Now on to Unfinished Business by James Van Praagh.
